Ecosystem engineers such as mussels may affect strongly both the structure of benthic assemblages and the ecosystem functioning. The black-pygmy mussel Limnoperna securis is an invasive species that is spreading along the Galician coast (NW Spain). Its current distribution overlaps with the distribution of the commercial native mussel species Mytilus galloprovincialis, but only in the inner part of two southern Galician rias. Here, we analysed the assemblages associated with clumps of the two mussel species and evaluated if the invasive species increased complexity of habitat. To measure complexity of clumps we used a new method modified from the “chain and tape” method. Results showed that the identity of the mussel influenced macrofaunal assemblages, but not meiofauna. L. securis increased the complexity of clumps, and such complexity explained a high percentage of variability of macrofauna. The shift in dominance from M. galloprovincialis to L. securis may alter habitat structure and complexity, affecting the macrofaunal assemblages with unpredictable consequences on trophic web relations.  相似文献

The distribution of particulate matter within river channels, including sediments, nutrients and pollutants, is fundamental to the survival of aquatic organisms. However, the interactions between flow and sediment transport at the patch scale of river systems represents an under‐researched component of physical habitat studies, particularly those concerning the characterization of ‘physical biotopes’ (riffles, runs, pools, glides). This paper describes a field methodology for exploring the transfer of particulate matter at small scales within river channels, which may be used to aid hydraulic habitat characterization. The field protocol combines field measurement of high frequency flow properties, to characterize hydraulic habitat units, and deployment of spatial arrays of turbidity probes, to detect the passage of artificially‐induced sediment plumes through different biotope units. Sediment plumes recorded by the probes are analysed quantitatively in the manner of the flood hydrograph, and qualitative inferences are made on the dominant mixing processes operating within different parts of the channel. Relationships between the nature of spatio‐temporal hydraulic variations within glide, riffle and pool biotopes, and the character and mixing behaviour of sediment plumes within these habitat units are identified. Results from these preliminary experiments suggest that investigating and characterizing the transfer and storage of sediments, nutrients and pollutants within and between different biotopes is a viable avenue for further research, with potential to contribute to improved physical habitat characterization for river management and habitat restoration. Biogeographers choose to align their scholarship within different domains, from ecological or historical biogeography, to landscape ecology, macroecology, or the analytical perspective initiated with the theory of island biogeography. Biogeography is also practiced under the umbrella of geography, as geographical biogeography. Using the ISI Web of Science journal article database, I performed content visualizations of research authored by those biogeographers with an identity or interest aligned with geography. Content affinities with ecological biogeography were strong. However, physical geography materialized as the core of biogeographical inquiry for geographers based upon the central location of physical geography within these visualizations, and upon the ranking of journals where these geographers publish. I argue that the systems legacy of physical geography provides geographical biogeographers with an identity and an invitation to connect with the field of scholars advancing the study of complex systems.  相似文献

In order to understand the nature of the urban climate, predict the effects of urbanization, or attempt to ameliorate some of the negative hydroclimatic effects of urbanization, it is necessary to have a good understanding of the role and significance of the urban surface. This paper presents a methodology which uses GIS to represent the characteristics and morphology of the urban surface, which can be used to describe a site objectively, model fluxes, or ensure spatial consistency between measured and modelled data, all of which can vary through time. The methodology is illustrated with respect to Chicago, Illinois. Surface data collected at three spatial scales were used to construct a georeferenced database which was linked to an objective, dynamic accessing system. Spatial variability of surface cover, derived hydroclimatic attributes, and modelled fluxes associated with changes in the urban environment are used to illustrate potential applications of the approach.  相似文献

岩溶塌陷作为世界上岩溶地区最为普遍的地质灾害和环境地质问题之一,对人类社会发展、工程建设等方面产生了严重的危害。二十世纪七十年代以来,国内外学者对岩溶塌陷的发育规律、分布特征、致塌原因、成因机理、勘测技术、防治措施、监测预报和数值模拟等方面做了大量的工作,取得了丰富的研究成果,由于岩溶塌陷发生和发展在地表以下而不易察觉和探测,其具有突发性、隐蔽性、多因素性、不确定性和模糊性等特点,目前统一的、系统的、权威的岩溶塌陷的成因机理及定量预测等理论和认识仍在逐步完善中。本文根据岩溶塌陷机理研究现状及发展趋势,从复杂性科学角度探讨了岩溶塌陷机理定量研究中的基本科学问题,对岩溶塌陷机理定量研究进行了初步思考,在参考借鉴多个相关领域技术方法的基础上,梳理了定量研究的内容,探讨了定量研究的方法、技术思路,以期在一定程度上丰富岩溶塌陷机理定量研究理论体系,推动岩溶塌陷机理定量研究进程。  相似文献

波动方程预测层间多次波有两类算法.一是由Berkhout和Verschuur(1998)提出的基于CFP(共聚焦点)延拓的算法,另一是由Weglein(1997)等人提出的基于逆散射级数法的算法.ISS(逆散射级数)算法具有不依赖速度模型的优点,但是其计算成本很高.本文改进了Weglein提出的1-D预测公式,提高了计算效率.从理论方面,改进算法的计算速度提高了大约12倍.实际结果表明其计算速度更快,提高近80倍左右,主要原因在于后者的空间复杂度小.此外,由于时间-空间域比伪深度-波数域的层间多次波预测有更多的优点,本文推导了1.5-D时间-空间域ISS层间多次波预测算法,该算法有计算速度快、预测噪音小、适应观测系统能力强和不依赖地震子波等优点.在实际应用中,计算成本高是ISS预测层间多次波算法的主要障碍.因此,本文还讨论了预测层间多次波的策略.结合本文提出的改进算法和应用策略,能够在实际地震资料处理中较好地应用ISS预测层间多次波.  相似文献

Landscapes evolve in complex, non‐linear ways over Quaternary timespans. Integrated geomorphological field studies usually yield plausible hypotheses about timing and impact of process activity. Landscape Evolution Models (LEMs) have the potential to test and falsify these landscape evolution hypotheses. Despite this potential, LEMs have mainly been used with hypothetical data and rarely to simulate the evolution of an actual landscape. In this paper, we use a LEM (LAPSUS: LandscApe ProcesS modelling at mUlti dimensions and scaleS) to explore if it is possible to test and falsify conclusions of an earlier field study on 50 ka landscape evolution in Okhombe Valley, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. In this LEM, five landscape processes interact without supervision: water driven erosion and deposition, creep, solifluction, biological weathering and frost weathering. Calibration matched model results to three types of qualitative fieldwork observations: individual process activity over time, relative process activity over time and net landscape changes over time. Results demonstrate that landscape evolution of the Okhombe valley can be plausibly simulated. A particularly interesting and persistent feature of model results are erosional and depositional phases that lag climatic drivers both by decades, and by several ka within a few hundred meters. The longer lag has not been reported for this spatial scale before and may be an effect of slow landscape‐soil‐vegetation feedbacks. The combined modelling and fieldwork results allow a more complete understanding of these responses to climate change and can fill in hiatuses in the stratigraphical record.
