Cygnus A was the first hyper-active galaxy discovered, and it
remains by far the closest of the ultra-luminous radio galaxies. As
such, Cygnus A has played a fundamental role in the study of virtually
all aspects of extreme activity in galaxies. We present a review of jet
theory for powering the double-lobed radio emitting structures in
powerful radio galaxies, followed by a review of observations of Cygnus
A in the radio, optical, and X-ray relevant to testing various aspects
of jet theory. Issues addressed include: jet structure from pc- to
kpc-scales, jet stability, confinement, composition, and velocity, the
double shock structure for the jet terminus and the origin of multiple
radio hotspots, the nature of the filamentary structure in the radio
lobes, and the hydrodynamic evolution of the radio lobes within a dense
cluster atmosphere, including an analysis of pressure balance between
the various gaseous components. Also discussed are relativistic
particle acceleration and loss mechanisms in Cygnus A, as well as
magnetic field strengths and geometries both within the radio source,
and in the intracluster medium. We subsequently review the
classification, cluster membership, and the emission components of the
Cygnus A galaxy. The origin of the activity is discussed.
Concentrating on the nuclear regions of the galaxy, we review the
evidence for an obscured QSO, also given the constraints on the
orientation of the radio source axis with respect to the sky plane. We
present an overview of models of central engines in AGN and observations
of Cygnus A which may be relevant to testing such models. We conclude
with a brief section concerning the question of whether Cygnus A is
representative of powerful high redshift radio galaxies.

We show that the dearth of brown dwarfs in short-period orbits around Solar-mass stars – the brown dwarf desert – can be understood as a consequence of inward migration within an evolving protoplanetary disc. Brown dwarf secondaries forming at the same time as the primary star have masses which are comparable to the initial mass of the protoplanetary disc. Subsequent disc evolution leads to inward migration, and destruction of the brown dwarf, via merger with the star. This is in contrast with massive planets, which avoid this fate by forming at a later epoch when the disc is close to being dispersed. Within this model, a brown dwarf desert arises because the mass at the hydrogen-burning limit is coincidentally comparable to the initial disc mass for a Solar mass star. Brown dwarfs should be found in close binaries around very low mass stars, around other brown dwarfs, and around Solar-type stars during the earliest phases of star formation. 相似文献

We present a new survey for Hα emission objects in the Circinus cloud complex and introduce an efficient photometric method for detecting Hα emission via observations in a narrow‐band filter. The observed flux is compared to a blackbody fit of the continuum. Our search strategy reveals 20 stars with strong Hα emission (EW > 10 Å), eight of them being new detections. All Hα stars display infrared excess corroborating their youth. On the other hand, the region contains a number of infrared excess objects that do not show Hα emission. Our results support the picture that accretion – as witnessed by Hα emission – is a highly variable phenomenon. Therefore, Hα surveys can only trace the temporarily active objects. In contrast, infrared excess is a more robust tracer that reveals most of the population of young stellar objects in a star forming region. Our analysis of the general stellar content of the region yields a reliable distance of 450 pc for the Circinus cloud.
