Oceanic excitation of daily to seasonal signals in Earth rotation: results from a constant-density numerical model 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Velocity and mass fields from a constant-density, near-global ocean model, driven with observed twice-daily surface wind stresses and atmospheric pressures for the period October 1992-September 1993, are used to calculate oceanic excitation functions for the length of day (LOD) and for polar motion (PM), and results are analysed as a function of the frequency band. Variable currents and mass redistributions are both important in determining oceanic excitation functions. For bands with periods longer than one month, wind-driven variability is the primary cause of oceanic excitation signals. At higher frequency bands, larger deviations from the inverted barometer response occur, and pressure-driven signals contribute more significantly to the variance in the excitation functions. Oceanic LOD excitation is generally small compared to that of the atmosphere, except for the 2-10 day band. At these scales, adding oceanic to atmospheric excitation series does not lead to better agreement with the observed LOD, although this result may be related to data quality issues. With regard to the excitation of PM, the ocean is in general as important as the atmosphere at most time scales. Combined oceanic and atmospheric excitation series compare visibly better with geodetic series than do atmospheric series alone, pointing to the ocean as a source of measurable signals in PM. 相似文献

Based on the time series of observational variations of the length of day (LOD) and seismic data in the world, the relations
of the decadal fluctuation and seasonal variation in the Earth’s rotation with global seismic activity are studied in this
paper. The results suggest that there are overall correlations on temporal scale and regional discrepancy on spatial scale
between global seismic activity and the Earth’s variable rotation, especially the seismic activity in the Eurasian seismic
zone (not including southeast Asia) and the Lower California-Eastern Alaska seismic zone correlating well with the Earth’s
variable rotation. According to the relations mentioned above, the observational data of the Earth’s rotation might provide
a referential basis for monitoring global seismic activity.

A series of experiments were performed in a rotating annulus of fluid to study effects of rotation rate on planeta-ry-scale baroclinic wave flows. The experiments reveal that change in rotation rate of fluid container causes variation in Rossby number and Taylor number in flows and leads to change in flow patterns and in phase and amplitude of quasi-stationary waves. For instance, with increasing rotation rate, amplitude of quasi-stationary waves increases and phase shifts upstream. On the contrary, with decreasing rotation rate, amplitude of quasi-stationary waves decreases and phase shifts downstream. In the case of the earth’s atmosphere, although magnitude of variation in earth’s rotation rate is very small, yet it causes a very big change in zonal velocity component of wind in the atmosphere and of currents in the ocean, and therefore causes a remarkable change in Rossby number and Taylor number deter-mining regimes in planetary-scale geophysical flows. The observation reveals that intensity and geographic location of subtropic anticyclones in both of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres change consistently with the variation in earth’s rotation rale. The results of fluid experiments are consistent, qualitatively, with observed phenomena in the atmospheric circulation. 相似文献

Within the frame of the linear model of coregionalization, this paper sets up equations relating the variogram matrix of the principal components extracted from the variance-covariance matrix to the diagonal variogram matrices of the regionalized factors. The spatial orthogonality of the principal components is investigated in three situations: the intrinsic correlation, two basic structures with independent nugget components, three basic structures with independent nugget components and uncorrelated subsets of variables. Two examples point out that the correlation between the principal components may be nonnegligible at short distances, especially if the correlation structure changes according to the spatial scale considered. For one of the two case studies, an orthogonal varimax rotation of the first principal components is found to greatly reduce the spatial correlation between some of them. 相似文献
