Teeth are usually targeted for dating archaeological sites because they are less prone to dissolution, in comparison with bones. However, despite this apparent resistance, teeth do undergo diagenesis, which needs to be accounted for in order to obtain accurate ages. In particular, the uptake of trace elements such as uranium in dental tissues needs to be considered for dose rate determination when dated using electron spin resonance (ESR). Characterising the mineralogy and structural integrity of samples prior to dating may thus provide important information related to their state of preservation, especially in the case of teeth whose U content can significantly affect the dose rate.In this study, we dated five teeth of small-sized bovids using combined ESR/U-series dating. They were collected at the Middle Stone Age site of Lovedale, located in the central interior of South Africa. Micromorphology provided sedimentary context to the samples, which were recovered from a layer of gravel rich in faunal remains. Using cathodoluminescence, laser-induced fluorescence, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and Raman micro-spectroscopy we assessed the degree of preservation of the enamel. Results reveal that carbonate hydroxyapatite underwent post-depositional alteration, based on its molecular structure and elemental composition. Although the teeth all originate from the same layer and were sampled in the same 1-m square and at a similar elevation, U-content in the enamel differs highly from one tooth to the other, with values ranging from 1.7 to 29.6 ppm. These values are correlated with equivalent doses (De) from 228 to 923 Gy and are consistent with variations in crystallinity determined with vibrational spectroscopy. We also investigated the possible saturation of the ESR signal, by repeating measurements with microwave power values from 1 to 20 mW.Despite such diversity in U-content, the ages calculated assuming an early uptake of U all fall within the same range, from 63 ± 8 ka to 68 ± 15 ka and may only represent a minimum estimate.  相似文献

Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICRMS) can begin to tease apart the molecular character of sedimentary organic matter (SOM). We therefore tested five different solvents (aqueous base, CHCl3, MeOH, pyridine and water) for their ability to extract a representative fraction from two organic rich lacustrine sediments, Mangrove Lake, Bermuda (MLB) and Mud Lake, Florida (MLF). Following comparison using liquid state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and negative ion mode electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (FTICRMS) we found that pyridine was the optimal solvent, extracting a more diverse (10–100× greater integration for carbonyl, amide and amine groups) and a larger number of peaks on average (1375–1450 vs. 380–1450). Comparison of the pyridine extracts between MLB, MLF and two organic poor sediments from the Mississippi River Delta and Bayou Grande (Pensacola, FL) showed that only 4.9% of the molecular formulae were common to all four and that unique formulae made up the highest proportion of the assignments. The use of pyridine for extracting immature (Holocene) SOM for FTICRMS analysis can therefore be widely applied to immature sediments and produce representative spectra.  相似文献

This paper proposes a new approximation to energy dissipation in time domain simulation of sloshing waves by use of a linear potential theory.The boundary value problem is solved by the NURBS(non-uniform rational B-spline) higher-order panel method,in which a time-domain Green function is employed.The energy dissipation is modeled by changing the boundary condition on solid boundaries.Model experiments are carried out in a partially filled rectangular tank with forced horizontal motion.Sloshing-induced internal pressures and horizontal force obtained numerically and experimentally are compared with each other.It is observed that the present energy dissipation approximation can help produce a fair agreement between experimental forces and those of numerical simulations.  相似文献

A methodology for rock classification is presented that considers lithology and reservoir parameters on the basis of a combined fractal analysis of well logs and mercury porosimetry results with nuclear magnetic resonance outcomes. A sandy‐shaly thinly‐bedded Miocene gas bearing formation in the Carpathian Foredeep is investigated. Fractal correlation dimensions D2 calculated for standard logs are used to distinguish sandstone as the most homogeneous lithological group with the highest porosity. The fractal analysis also confirmed observations of gas accumulations in sandstone, shaly sandstone and sandy claystone as rocks of high porosity. The results of two laboratory methods are combined to improve reservoir properties assessment and evaluate movable media in pore space; this technique was based on the similarity of mercury porosimetry results plotted as cumulative intrusion volume versus pressure or pore diameter and also the curves of cumulative porosity and transverse relaxation time distributions using nuclear magnetic resonance. Close values of porosity from logs, recorded in situ and in laboratory measurements, provide the link between fractal analysis and porosimetry and nuclear magnetic resonance measurements.  相似文献

核磁共振接收信号的质量主要受探测天线的传递特性影响,当传递特性较差时,严重影响测量效果.结合目前国内外核磁共振找水仪天线的研制情况,给出了接收天线传递特性的计算方法,根据数值计算结果讨论了影响传递特性的天线参数.利用吉林大学研制的核磁共振找水仪进行实际测试,结果证明与讨论结果一致.本文得出的传递特性影响因素和接收信号质量评估方法,可以为不同类型核磁共振找水仪天线的设计提供依据,将促使核磁共振方法在复杂地形环境找水及隧道、矿井灾害水源探测等方面得到有效应用.  相似文献

本文利用云南地区永胜台观测的地磁南北和东西分量开展舒曼谐振的背景变化特征分析.通过提取舒曼谐振各阶频率和功率谱密度的小时均值,分析了前三阶舒曼谐振频率和功率谱密度在分点和至点前后的周日变化特征.舒曼谐振功率谱密度的周日变化与亚洲、非洲和美洲三大闪电活动中心的活跃时段以及观测站相对于三大闪电活动中心的方位密切相关.舒曼谐振频率的周日变化特征更复杂.各阶功率谱密度和频率在夏至和秋分前后的变化幅度比春分和冬至前后大.从2011年舒曼谐振频率和功率谱密度日中值的年变化图中发现,谐振频率随季节变化的特征不明显,而功率谱密度的年度变化曲线呈半周期正弦波形态,以7月份为轴对称分布.功率谱密度的季节变化特征与闪电活动的季节变化特征相一致.南北和东西分量得到的前三阶谐振频率,第一阶约稳定在7.5 Hz.而随着阶数增加,南北分量得到的谐振频率比东西分量约大0.5 Hz.高阶谐振频率发生偏移的原因目前还不清楚.  相似文献
