As a consequence of rapid and immoderate urbanization, simulating urban growth in metropolitan areas effectively becomes a crucial and yet difficult task. Cellular automata (CA) model is an attractive tool for understanding complex geographical phenomena. Although intercity urban flows, the key factors in metropolitan development, have already been taken into consideration in CA models, there is still room for improvement because the influences of urban flows may not necessarily follow the distance decay relationship and may change over time. A feasible solution is to define the weights of intercity urban flows. Therefore, this study presents a novel method based on weighted urban flows (CAWeightedFlow) with the support of web search engine. The relatedness measured by the co-occurrences of the cities’ names (toponyms) on massive web pages can be deemed as the weights of intercity urban flows. After applying the weights, the gravitational field model is integrated with Logistic-CA to fulfill the modeling task. This method is employed to the urban growth simulation in the Pearl River Delta, one of the most urbanized metropolitan areas in China, from 2005 to 2008. The results indicate that our method outperforms traditional methods with respect to two measures of calibration goodness-of-fit. For example, CAWeightedFlow can yield the best value of ‘figure of merit’. We investigate the pattern of anomalies in the light curves of caustic-crossing binary microlensing events induced by spot(s) on the lensed source star. To this end, we perform simulations of events with various models of spots. From these simulations we find that the spot-induced anomalies take various forms depending on the physical state of spots, which is characterized by the surface brightness contrast, the size, the number, the umbra/penumbra structure, the shape and the orientation with respect to the sweeping caustic. We also examine the feasibility of distinguishing the two possibly degenerate types of anomalies caused by a spot and a transiting planet and find that in many cases the degeneracy can be separated from the characteristic multiple deviation feature in the spot-induced anomaly pattern caused by the multiplicity of spots. 相似文献

If a source star is gravitationally microlensed by a multiple lens system, the resulting light curve can have significant deviations from the standard form of a single lens event. The chance of producing significant deviations becomes important when the separations between the component lenses are equivalent to the combined angular Einstein ring radius of the system. For multiple lens systems composed of more than two lenses, however, this condition is difficult to meet because the orbits of such systems are unstable. Even if events are caused by a multiple lens system with stable orbits where a pair of lenses are closely located and the other component (a third body) has a wide separation from the pair, identifying the lens multiplicity photometrically will be difficult because the event will be identified by either a binary lens event caused by the close pair of lenses or a single lens event caused by the third body. In this paper, we show that if a seemingly binary lens event is followed up astrometrically using future high-precision interferometers, the existence of an additional third body can be identified via a repeating event. We show that the signatures of third bodies can be unambiguously identified from the characteristic distortions they make in the centroid shift trajectories. We also show that owing to the long-range astrometric effect of third bodies, the detection efficiency will be considerable even for third bodies with large separations from their close lens pairs. 相似文献

We examine the possible emission of gravitational waves from white dwarfs undergoing self-similar oscillations driven by the
energy released during relaxation of their differential rotation. Two distributions of the initial angular momentum are considered.
It is assumed that 1% of the energy dissipated by a rotating white dwarf is converted into the energy of self-similar oscillations
and, therefore, into gravitational radiation. The relative amplitude of the gravitational radiation from an isolated white
dwarf at a distance of 50 pc is found to be less than 10−27. The emission from the galactic population of white dwarfs may create a background which overlaps the random cosmological
background of gravitational radiation for the improved decihertz detectors currently being proposed.
