We present imaging and spectroscopic data on Comet 19P/Borrelly that were obtained around the time of the Deep Space 1 encounter and in subsequent months. In the four months after perihelion, the comet showed a strong primary (sunward) jet that is aligned with the nucleus' spin axis. A weaker secondary jet on the opposite hemisphere appeared to become active around the end of 2001, when the primary jet was shutting down. We investigated the gas and dust distributions in the coma, which exhibited strong asymmetries in the sunward/antisunward direction. A comparison of the CN and C2 distributions from 2001 and 1994 (during times when the viewing geometry was almost identical) shows that each species is remarkably similar, indicating that the comet's activity is essentially repeatable from one apparition to the next. We also measured the dust reflectivities as a function of wavelength and position in the coma, and though the dust was very red overall, we again found variations with respect to the solar direction. We used the primary jet's appearance on several dates to determine the orientation of the rotation pole to be α=214°, δ=−5°. We compared this result to published images from 1994 to conclude that the nucleus is near a state of simple rotation. However, data from the 1911, 1918, and 1925 apparitions indicate that the pole might have shifted by 5-10° since the comet was discovered. Using our pole position and the published nongravitational acceleration terms, we computed a mass of the nucleus of 3.3×1016 g and a bulk density of 0.49 g cm−3 (with a range of 0.29<ρ<0.83 g cm−3). An analysis of the behavior of the dust coma of the Comet C/1999 S4 (LINEAR) from visible and infrared images acquired shortly before and after the disruption of the comet's nucleus is presented. During the predisruption phase, the overall dust production increased by a factor of 11 in two steps; an initial outburst occurred between July 18 and 19 and a second stronger one occurred between July 20 and 21. Postdisruption images obtained on July 26 and 27 suggest that most of the dust was released in the huge outburst produced during the disruption of the nucleus a few days before. The color of the dust coma did not show any measurable day-to-day variation and was also very uniform throughout the coma. A Monte Carlo model designed to compute both the input and output radiation fields from spherical-shell cometary atmospheres has been developed. The code is an improved version of that by H. Salo (1988, Icarus76, 253-269); it includes the computation of the full Stokes vector and can compute both the input fluxes impinging on the nucleus surface and the output radiation. This will have specific applications for the near-nucleus photometry, polarimetry, and imaging data collection planned in the near future from space probes. After carrying out some validation tests of the code, we consider here the effects of including the full 4×4 scattering matrix in the calculations of the radiative flux impinging on cometary nuclei. As input to the code we used realistic phase matrices derived by fitting the observed behavior of the linear polarization as a function of phase angle. The observed single scattering linear polarization phase curves of comets are fairly well represented by a mixture of magnesium-rich olivine particles and small carbonaceous particles. The input matrix of the code is thus given by the phase matrix for olivine as obtained in the laboratory plus a variable scattering fraction phase matrix for absorbing carbonaceous particles. These fractions are 3.5% for Comet Halley and 6% for Comet Hale-Bopp, the comet with the highest percentage of all those observed.The errors in the total input flux impinging on the nucleus surface caused by neglecting polarization are found to be within 10% for the full range of solar zenith angles. Additional tests on the resulting linear polarization of the light emerging from cometary nuclei in near-nucleus observation conditions at a variety of coma optical thicknesses show that the polarization phase curves do not experience any significant changes for optical thicknesses τ?0.25 and Halley-like surface albedo, except near 90° phase angle. 相似文献

We revised geological data substantiating the unified 1983 Regional Stratigraphic Chart of Gorny Altai Quaternary deposits. Based on our own and literature data, we showed that Lower and Middle Quaternary glacial horizons are erroneously distinguished in the Yaloman-Katun’ zone of southeastern Altai. A new correlation is proposed, according to which the glacial complex of the maximum glaciation (MIS-6) corresponds to the Inya catafluvial series and the glacial complex of the first postmaximum glaciation (MIS-4 unit), to the Sal’dzhar catafluvial series. The lectostratotypes of both series are described. The event history of the second half of the Late Neopleistocene in Gorny Altai (MIS-3 and MIS-2) was less catastrophic for ancient biota and Paleolithic man than it was believed earlier. 相似文献

We present the first measurements of the radiant and orbit of meteoroids that are part of the unusual Perseid activity called the 'Perseid Filament'. This filament was encountered by Earth in the years before and after the return of the comet to perihelion in December of 1992. Between 1989 and 1996, there were brief meteor outbursts of near-constant duration with a symmetric activity profile. In 1993, however, rates increased more gradually to the peak. That gradual increase is identified here as a separate dust component, which we call the 'Nodal Blanket'. We find that the Nodal Blanket has a very small radiant dispersion. On the other hand, the Perseid Filament has a radiant that is significantly dispersed and systematically displaced by 0.3°. This dispersion implies that unusually high ejection velocities or planetary perturbations must have had time to disperse the stream. In both cases, one would expect a rapid dispersion of matter along the comet orbit. In order to explain the concentration of dust near the comet position, we propose a novel scenario involving long-term accumulation in combination with protection of the region near the comet against close encounters with Jupiter due to librations of the comet orbit around the 1:11 mean-motion resonance. 相似文献

We discuss some fundamental aspects of Earth history as predicted by what has come to be called coherent rather than stochastic catastrophism. The latter essentially seeks to provide an understanding of terrestrial evolution in terms of occasional kilometre-plus impactors from the asteroid belt whereas the former recognises a far more complex extraterrestrial regime arising from the streams of sub-kilometre and kilometre-plus debris due to the disintegration of successive giant comets in sub-Jovian orbits. Periodicities of 15 Myr during the later Phanerozoic (i.e. 250 to 0 Myr BP) and 200 yr during the Holocene (i.e. 10,000 to 0 yr 1313) are likely fundamental signatures in the terrestrial record relating to the action of past and present giant cornets respectively. 相似文献

In order to approximate the free-surface motion of an Earth-sized planet subjected to a giant impact, we have described the excitation of body and surface waves in a spherical compressible fluid planet without gravity or intrinsic material attenuation for a buried explosion source. Using the mode summation method, we obtained an analytical solution for the surface motion of the fluid planet in terms of an infinite series involving the products of spherical Bessel functions and Legendre polynomials. We established a closed form expression for the mode summation excitation coefficient for a spherical buried explosion source, and then calculated the surface motion for different spherical explosion source radii a (for cases of a / R = 0.001 to 0.035, R is the radius of the Earth) We also studied the effect of placing the explosion source at different radii r 0 (for cases of r 0 / R = 0.90 to 0.96) from the centre of the planet. The amplitude of the quasi-surface waves depends substantially on a / R , and slightly on r 0 / R . For example, in our base-line case, a / R = 0.03, r 0 / R = 0.96 , the free-surface velocity above the source is 0.26 c , whereas antipodal to the source, the peak free surface velocity is 0.19 c . Here c is the acoustic velocity of the fluid planet. These results can then be applied to studies of atmosphere erosion via blow-off caused by asteroid impacts. 相似文献
