Using the archival ROSAT PSPC observations, AB Dor is found to be variable in X-rays. The periodic variations are consistent with previously reported rotational period of 0
d
.514. The average spectrum of AB Dor is best represented with two-temperature Raymond-Smith model with kT values of 0.19±0.07 and 1.17±0.02 keV. The quiescent luminosity of the system is found to be 4.36±0.6×1030 ergs s–1. A flare with a rise time of 350 seconds is detected during which X-ray luminosity rises from 5.8±1.6×1030 to 15.8±4.9×1030 ergs s–1. We conclude that AB Dor is very similar to the active components of RS CVn binaries and other active classes. In view of the wide separation from the binary companion Rst 137B, this activity must be intrinsic to the active star. 相似文献

“Rotating RAdio Transients” (RRATs) are a newly discovered astronomical phenomenon, characterised by occasional brief radio
bursts, with average intervals between bursts ranging from minutes to hours. The burst spacings allow identification of periodicities,
which fall in the range 0.4 to 7 seconds. The RRATs thus seem to be rotating neutron stars, albeit with properties very different
from the rest of the population. We here present the serendipitous detection with the Chandra X-ray Observatory of a bright point-like X-ray source coincident with one of the RRATs. We discuss the temporal and spectral properties of
this X-ray emission, consider counterparts in other wavebands, and interpret these results in the context of possible explanations
for the RRAT population.

Multiple breaches of a dam resulting from wind-generated waves and wave overtopping are studied for a hypothetical long non-cohesive earthen dam with an uneven crest. Both wind speed and direction affect breach locations and outflow for a particular reservoir surface geometry. Locations on the dam with longer fetches along the wind direction are more subject to wave overtopping and breaching than other locations. Higher wind speeds lead to wave overtopping and dam breaches under larger freeboards than lower wind speeds. For a specified inflow hydrograph and spillway configuration, there exists a location at which the smallest estimated peak outflow occurs among all possible breach locations and the pool drops too quickly for additional breaches to develop. Using this location for a fuse plug or a pilot channel could minimize downstream impact, perhaps as an interim or emergency measure for a dam with inadequate spillway capacity. 相似文献
