The Parkes radio telescope has been used to study circular polarization in the spectra of masers at the 6035- and 6030-MHz transitions of excited OH. The targets were 91 previously catalogued sites of 6035-MHz maser emission. A few were not detected, primarily because of variability. However, the 6035-MHz intensity variations seldom exceed a factor of 2 over several years, with a handful of dramatic exceptions.
Towards many targets, the present observations have provided the first high-sensitivity search for the 6030-MHz transition and yielded 33 detections. All of the 6030-MHz maser features have 6035-MHz counterparts closely matching in velocity. For matching features, the 6030-MHz emission is most commonly weaker than the 6035-MHz emission by an order of magnitude but, in a few cases, is several times stronger. The detection statistics are well accounted for by very recent developments in maser modelling. However, the occasional occurrence of 6030-MHz maser emission stronger than at 6035-MHz poses a new challenge for the theory.
Spectra with good frequency resolution at 6030 and 6035 MHz yield many valuable measurements of magnetic fields. At each transition, the field can be inferred from a small frequency separation between the right-hand and left-hand circularly polarized features, attributed to the Zeeman effect in a magnetic field of a few mG. In the many instances where a 'Zeeman pair' on the 6035-MHz spectrum has features matched by the 6030-MHz spectrum, this provides convincing corroboration of the magnetic field, in both direction and magnitude.

Models for the formation of galaxies and clusters of galaxies require strong feedback in order to explain the observed properties of these systems. We investigate whether such feedback has observational consequences for the intergalactic medium, as probed in absorption towards background quasars. A typical quasar sight-line intersects one protocluster per unit redshift, and significant feedback from forming galaxies or active galactic nuclei, heating the protocluster gas, will result in a large clearing of reduced absorption in the Ly α forest. Such a gap could be detected at redshift ≳3 when the mean opacity is high. Feedback from Lyman-break galaxies in protoclusters can be probed by the absorption lines produced in their winds. Strong feedback from galaxies has a major impact on the number and properties of absorption lines with column densities N H i ∼1016 cm−2 . This feedback can be probed with multiple sight-lines and by studying the unsaturated higher order lines of the Lyman series. Galactic winds from dwarf galaxies should break up into clouds, in order not to overproduce the number of absorption lines. These clouds can then coast to large distances. 相似文献

Images of the 6.7-GHz methanol maser emission from W3(OH) made at 50- and 100-mas angular resolution with the Multi-Element Radio-Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN) are presented. The masers lie across the western face of the ultracompact H ii region in extended filaments which may trace large-scale shocks. There is a complex interrelation between the 6.7-GHz methanol masers and hydroxyl (OH) masers at 1.7 and 4.7 GHz. Together the two species trace an extended filamentary structure that stretches at least 3100 au across the face of the ultracompact H ii region. The dominant 6.7-GHz methanol emission coincides with the radio continuum peak and is populated by masers with broad spectral lines. The 6.7-GHz methanol emission is elongated at position angle 50° with a strong velocity gradient, and bears many similarities to the methanol maser disc structure reported in NGC 7538. It is surrounded by arcs of ground state OH masers at 1.7 GHz and highly excited OH masers at 13.44 GHz, some of which have the brightest methanol masers at their focus. We suggest that this region hosts the excitation centre for the ultracompact H ii region. 相似文献

Measuring the black hole masses of high-redshift quasars 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A new technique is presented for determining the black hole masses of high-redshift quasars from optical spectroscopy. The new method utilizes the full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of the low-ionization Mg ii emission line and the correlation between the broad-line region (BLR) radius and the continuum luminosity at 3000 Å. Using archival ultraviolet (UV) spectra it is found that the correlation between BLR radius and 3000-Å luminosity is tighter than the established correlation with 5100-Å luminosity. Furthermore, it is found that the correlation between BLR radius and 3000-Å continuum luminosity is consistent with a relation of the form R BLR ∝λ L 1/2 λ , as expected for a constant ionization parameter. Using a sample of objects with broad-line radii determined from reverberation mapping it is shown that the FWHM of Mg ii and Hβ are consistent with following an exact one-to-one relation, as expected if both Hβ and Mg ii are emitted at the same radius from the central ionizing source. The resulting virial black hole mass estimator based on rest-frame UV observables is shown to reproduce black hole mass measurements based on reverberation mapping to within a factor of 2.5 (1σ). Finally, the new UV black hole mass estimator is shown to produce identical results to the established optical (Hβ) estimator when applied to 128 intermediate-redshift (0.3 < z < 0.9) quasars drawn from the Large Bright Quasar Survey and the radio-selected Molonglo quasar sample. We therefore conclude that the new UV virial black hole mass estimator can be reliably used to estimate the black hole masses of quasars from z ∼ 0.25 through to the peak epoch of quasar activity at z ∼ 2.5 via optical spectroscopy alone. 相似文献

We present a new method, the coupled escape probability (CEP), for exact calculation of line emission from multi-level systems, solving only algebraic equations for the level populations. The CEP formulation of the classical two-level problem is a set of linear equations , and we uncover an exact analytic expression for the emission from two-level optically thick sources that holds as long as they are in the 'effectively thin' regime. In a comparative study of a number of standard problems, the CEP method outperformed the leading line transfer methods by substantial margins.
The algebraic equations employed by our new method are already incorporated in numerous codes based on the escape probability approximation. All that is required for an exact solution with these existing codes is to augment the expression for the escape probability with simple zone-coupling terms. As an application, we find that standard escape probability calculations generally produce the correct cooling emission by the C ii 158-μm line but not by the3 P lines of O i . 相似文献
