The refraction of ordinary superluminous waves in a pulsar plasma is considered. The effect is found essentially to influence the apparent spatial structure of a pulsar emission region. This is of particular importance for the interpretation of the observations of pulsar interstellar scintillations, which provide an opportunity of resolving the magnetospheres of nearby pulsars. When calculated with account for magnetospheric refraction, the dependence of transverse ray separation on pulse longitude appears to be similar to that inferred by means of interstellar interferometry. It is shown that the differences in the character of the dependences observed at various frequencies may be attributed to the frequency-dependent efficiency of refraction. Taking into account magnetospheric refraction makes it necessary to reconsider the estimate of the emission altitude derived from the apparent size of the emission region. The renewed estimate appears to be almost an order of magnitude less, so that it is consistent with the emission altitudes obtained by other methods.  相似文献

Current-carrying flows, in the laboratory and in astrophysical jets, can form remarkably stable magnetic structures. Decades of experience show that such flows often build equilibria that reverse field directions, evolving to a magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) Taylor state, which has remarkable stability properties. We model jets and the magnetic bubbles they build as reversed-field pinch equilibria by assuming the driver current to be stiff in the MHD sense. Taking the jet current as rigid and a fixed function of position, we prove a theorem: that the same, simple MHD stability conditions guarantee stability, even after the jet turns off. This means that magnetic structures harbouring a massive inventory of magnetic energy can persist long after the building jet current has died away. These may be the relic radio 'fossils', 'ghost bubbles' or 'magnetic balloons' found in clusters. These equilibria, which are under magnetic tension, will evolve, retaining the stability properties from that state. The remaining fossil is not a disordered ball of magnetic fields, but a stable structure under tension, able to respond to the slings and arrows of outside forces. Typically their Alfvén speeds greatly exceed the cluster sound speed, and so they can keep out hot cluster plasma, leading to X-ray ghosts. Passing shocks cannot easily destroy them, but can energize and light them up anew at radio frequencies. Bubbles can rise in the hot cluster plasma, perhaps detaching from the parent radio galaxy but stable against Rayleigh–Taylor and other modes.  相似文献

Heating and acceleration of electrons in solar impulsive hard X-ray (HXR) flares are studied according to the two-stage acceleration model developed by Zhang for solar 3He-rich events. It is shown that electrostatic H-cyclotron waves can be excited at a parallel phase velocity less than about the electron thermal velocity and thus can significantly heat the electrons (up to 40 MK) through Landau resonance. The preheated electrons with velocities above a threshold are further accelerated to high energies in the flare-acceleration process. The flare-produced electron spectrum is obtained and shown to be thermal at low energies and power law at high energies. In the non-thermal energy range, the spectrum can be double power law if the spectral power index is energy dependent or related. The electron energy spectrum obtained by this study agrees quantitatively with the result derived from the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) HXR observations in the flare of 2002 July 23. The total flux and energy flux of electrons accelerated in the solar flare also agree with the measurements.  相似文献

The problem of effective transform of Poynting flux energy into the kinetic energy of relativistic plasma outflow in a magnetosphere is considered. In this article we present an example of such acceleration. In order to perform it, we use the approach of ideal axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). For highly magnetized plasma outflow we show that a linear growth of Lorentz factor with a cylindrical distance from the rotational axis is a general result for any field configuration in the sub-magnetosonic flow. In the far region the full magnetohydrodynamics problem for one-dimensional flow is considered. It turns out that the effective plasma outflow acceleration is possible in the paraboloidal magnetic field. It is shown that such an acceleration is due to the drift of charged particles in the crossed electric and magnetic field. The clear explanation of the absence of acceleration in the monopole magnetic field if given.   相似文献

The evolution of the Alfvén turbulence due to three-wave interactions is discussed using kinetic theory for a collisionless, thermal plasma. There are three low-frequency modes, analogous to the three modes of compressible magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). When only Alfvén waves are considered, the known anisotropy of turbulence in incompressible MHD theory is reproduced. Inclusion of a fast mode wave leads to the separation of turbulence into two regimes: small wave numbers where three-wave processes involving a fast mode are dominant, and large wave numbers where the three Alfvén wave process is dominant. Possible application of the anisotropic Alfvén turbulence to the interstellar medium and dissipation of magnetic energy in magnetars are discussed.  相似文献

We consider the dissipation by Fermi acceleration of magnetosonic turbulence in the Reynolds layer of the interstellar medium. The scale in the cascade at which electron acceleration via stochastic Fermi acceleration (STFA) becomes comparable to further cascade of the turbulence defines the inner scale. For any magnetic turbulent spectra equal to or shallower than Goldreich–Sridhar this turns out to be ≥1012 cm, which is much larger than the shortest length-scales observed in radio scintillation measurements. While STFA for such spectra then contradict models of scintillation which appeal directly to an extended, continuous turbulent cascade, such a separation of scales is consistent with the recent work of Boldyrev & Gwinn and Boldyrev & Konigl suggesting that interstellar scintillation may result from the passage of radio waves through the Galactic distribution of thin ionized boundary surfaces of H  ii regions, rather than density variations from cascading turbulence. The presence of STFA dissipation also provides a mechanism for the non-ionizing heat source observed in the Reynolds layer of the interstellar medium. STFA accommodates the proper heating power, and the input energy is rapidly thermalized within the low-density Reynolds layer plasma.  相似文献

Whilst observations provide many examples of collimated outflows or jets from astrophysical bodies, there remain unresolved questions relating to their formation, propagation and stability. The ability to form scaled jets in the laboratory has provided many useful insights. Experiments (Lebedev et al.: 2002, ApJ 564, 113) using conical arrays of fine metallic wires on the MAGPIE generator (1MA in 240 ns) have produced radiatively cooled collimated jets in vacuum using the redirection of convergent flows by a conical shock. Here we present results of a jet produced by this method propagating through a photo-ionized, quasi-stationary gas cloud. A working surface is observed at the head of the jet. The velocity of this working surface is lower than the velocity of a jet tip in vacuum.  相似文献

The discovery of C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) at 7 AU from the Sun provided the first opportunity to follow the activity of a bright comet over a large range of heliocentric distances rh. Production rates of a number of parent molecules and daughter species have been monitored both pre- and postperihelion. CO was found to be the major driver of the activity far from the Sun, surpassed by water within 3 AU whose production rate reached 1031 s−1 at perihelion. Gas production curves obtained for various species show several behaviours with rh. Gas production curves contain important information concerning the physical state of cometary ices, the structure of the nucleus and all the processes taking place inside the nucleus leading to outgassing. They are relevant to the study of several other phenomena such as the sublimation from icy grains, dust mantling or seasonal effects. For some species, such as H2CO or HNC, they permit to constrain their origin in the coma. We discuss models of subsurface gas production in distant comets and predictions of how such a source may vary as the comet moves along its orbit, approaching perihelion and receding again. Features in the observed gas production curves of comet Hale-Bopp are generally interpretable in terms of either subsurface production (typical example: CO at large rh) or free sublimation (typical example: H2O). Possible implications for the vertical stratification of the cometary ices are reviewed, and preference is found for a model with crystallization of amorphous ice close to the nuclear surface. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献
