Geochemical discrimination of tectonic settings of basalts has been an important research direction of geochemistry for decades. Olivine is one of the earliest crystallized minerals of basaltic magma, which records a lot of hidden information of the formation and evolution of the magma. Therefore, basic elements in olivine are used to discriminate three tectonic settings, including the mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB), ocean island basalt (OIB) and island arc basalt (IAB). However, it is still difficult to accurately discriminate the tectonic settings by using these diagrams. The machine learning algorithm is introduced to solve the aforementioned problem. The classification performance of the machine learning discrimination method largely depends on the rationality of parameter determination. To this end, the paper proposes a coupling intelligent method for geochemical discrimination of tectonic settings using olivine composition of the basalts based on the grey wolf optimizer (GWO)-optimized support vector machine (SVM), or GWO-SVM for short. GWO is used to seek the optimal parameter combination of SVM to form the optimal mapping relationship between basic elements in olivine and basalt tectonic settings, so as to realize the accurate discrimination of MORB, OIB and IAB. In addition, according to the published geochemical data of basalt samples, the discrimination performance of GWO-SVM is evaluated by means of the simulation experiment, hold-out validation and k-fold cross-validation. The evaluation results are represented by the confusion matrix and its derived evaluation indicators. The results show that GWO-SVM can discriminate the tectonic settings of the basalts based on olivine compositions with overall classification accuracy of up to 85%. Thus, in comparison with the traditional discrimination diagram method, the machine learning discrimination method based on multi-algorithm fusion can significantly improve the discrimination accuracy of basalt tectonic settings. © 2020, Science Press. This paper reports new field observations and new petrological, textural and geochemical data on two gabbroic intrusions and one pegmatoid dyke from the French Polynesian islands Maupiti and Bora Bora, respectively. Olivine crystals from the Faataufi and Barque de Hiro gabbros (Maupiti) include High Temperature Iddingsite (HTI), exhibiting three distinct morphological facies. Chemical and crystallographical data performed by electron microprobe, scanning microscope, X-ray diffractometry and Near InfraRed spectroscopy show that HTI results from modifications of olivine structure through intense hydroxylation and Fe-oxidation. The HTI-free 120 m-wide Cloche de Hiro dyke (Bora Bora) exhibits a textural zonation from heterogranular/intergranular gabbro (peripheral part) to typical pegmatoid (inner area). We propose a textural tetrahedral classificatory diagram which can be used to clearly distinguish the textural characteristics of the pegmatoids from those of the other coarse-grained samples. Through comparison with a lava flow containing vesicle-rich segregation sheets, we suggest that the Cloche de Hiro dyke may correspond to a huge segregation structure derived from a Maupiti-type HTI-bearing gabbro through a vapor-differentiation process. Both intrusions might be considered as representative of two superposed levels in a vertically arranged magmatic complex. In this view, the Maupiti gabbroic bodies would represent the lower part of the postulated system. Under high oxygen fugacity, olivine crystals would have undergone important modifications of their structure, leading to HTI. The huge Bora Bora pegmatoid dyke would be the upper part of the complex. After expulsion from the HTI-bearing gabbroic solidification zone by build-up of gas pressure, vesicle-rich residual melt would have gathered into a shallow level and crystallized there as a pegmatoid body.  相似文献

The Jinbaoshan ultramafic intrusion is a sheet-like body with a thick wehrlite unit in the center and thin pyroxenite units at the margins. PGE are enriched in several disseminated sulfide zones in the intrusion. Olivine from the intrusion has low Fo and depleted Ni contents compared to olivine from coeval Emeishan picrites. Whole rock major and trace element concentrations suggest that the Jinbaoshan wehrlites originally contained <30% trapped liquid. The total amount of sulfide in the rocks exceeds that which could have been dissolved in the trapped liquid. The Jinbaoshan wehrlites are interpreted to represent residual assemblages formed by dissolution of plagioclase by passing magma. No clear evidence of crustal contamination is indicated by S, Nd and Os isotopes. We envision that sulfide saturation occurred at depth due to olivine and chromite crystallization. Immiscible sulfide droplets were transported to the Jinbaoshan conduit where they accumulated and reacted with magma successively passing through the conduit to achieve high PGE concentrations.  相似文献

Infrared absorbance spectra over ∼100 to 1,800 cm−1 were collected from optically thin films of 21 samples with compositions spanning the forsterite–fayalite binary. Polarization information from previous specular reflectance data on end-members was used in tracing the peaks across the entire binary. Peak positions (νi) were constrained by Lorentzian decompositions. Fitting also constrained widths for singlet peaks but for doublets and triplets, variation in νi with composition among the constituent polarizations alters widths from intrinsic. Because film thicknesses of 0.6–1.4 μm were estimated, our band strengths are approximate; however, relative intensities should be correct. Only for a few peaks does νi vary smoothly across the entire binary; instead, distinct linear trends exist for Fe- and Mg-rich olivines. Discontinuities and kinks in νi(X) occur at X = Mg/(Fe + Mg) = 0.7 and are accompanied by a change in intensity patterns. This interesting behavior was not revealed in previous spectra of powder dispersions. The contrasting character of IR vibrations for Fe- and Mg-rich olivines is inferred to arise from structural variations because (1) frequency is related to bond length, (2) other factors affecting frequency (cation mass and probably bonding type) vary linearly across the binary, and (3) available data on unit cell parameters are consistent with distinct trends for forsterites and fayalites. Vibrational components of heat capacity (C V) and enthalpy (H) calculated from νi, were found to be slightly more negative than linear interpolations between values for forsterite and fayalite. Our computations give smaller negative excesses from ideality in H than do previous calorimetric measurements, but are equal within experimental uncertainties.  相似文献

Seismic anisotropy in the upper mantle provides important constraints on mantle dynamics, continental evolution and global tectonics and is believed to be produced by the flow-induced lattice-preferred orientation (LPO) of olivine. Recent experimental studies at high pressure and temperature have suggested that the LPO of olivine is affected by pressure in addition to water and stress. However, there has been no report yet for the pressure-induced LPO of natural olivine because samples from the deep upper mantle are rare and often unsuitable for study due to ambiguous foliation and lineation. Here we show evidence of the pressure-induced LPO of natural olivine in diamond-bearing garnet peridotites from Finsch, South Africa. We found that the [010] axes of olivine are aligned subnormal to foliation and that the [001] axes are aligned subparallel to lineation, which is known as B-type LPO of olivine. The equilibrium pressure of the samples, as estimated using geobarometer, was greater than 4 GPa, indicating that the samples originated from a depth greater than ∼120 km. In addition, FTIR spectroscopy of the olivine showed that the samples are dry, with a water content of less than 90 ± 20 ppm H/Si (5.5 ± 1.2 ppm wt. H2O). These data suggest that the samples are the first natural examples of olivine displaying B-type LPOs produced due to high pressure under dry condition. Our data indicate that the trench-parallel seismic anisotropy observed in many subduction zones in and below subducting slabs at depths greater than ∼90 km under dry condition may be attributed to the pressure-induced olivine fabrics (B-type LPO) and may be interpreted as the entrainment of the sub-lithospheric mantle in the direction of subduction rather than anomalous trench-parallel flow.  相似文献

The giant Jinchuan magmatic sulfide deposit in China is the third largest mining deposits in the world. Although many research have been done, there still exist some debates in the genesis of deposit. This study using the LA-IC-MS to obtain the trace elements concentrations of the olivine in order to discuss the mechanism of influence the element variability and illustrate the process of magmatism and ore-forming. The analytical results show that Ni, Co correlate negatively with Fo in the olivine, Mn/Fe is positively correlate with Fo, while Mn/Zn and Zn/Fe show no obvious correlation with Fo. The primitive mantle olivine-normalized trace element patterns of the Jinchuan olivine show that Jinchuan Ⅰ, Ⅱ intrusions have the same trace elements characteristics, which display negative Cr, V, Ni, Co and Ti anomalies and enrichment of Zr, Y, Ti, Sc and Ca. The multi-element patterns of the Jinchuan olivine imply same parental magma in the intrusion Ⅰ and Ⅱ. The spinel which cocrystallization with the olivine make it display negative Cr, V and Ti anomalies. The contents of Ni and Co in olivine are influenced by the process of sulfide segregation and the reaction between sulfide and olivine. The lower content of Cr and V in olivine of the intrusion Ⅱ compared with the intrusion Ⅰ imply that the parental magma of the intrusion Ⅱ was more evolved. Higher Mn/Zn (>13) ratios and lower Zn/Fe (<11) ratios indicate that the magma of Jinchuan intrusion likely originate from partial melting of peridotite mantle possibly, instead of pyroxene mantle sources.  相似文献

The ductile behavior of olivine-rich rocks is critical to constrain thermal convection in the Earth's upper mantle. Classical olivine flow laws for dislocation or diffusion creep fail to explain the fast post-seismic surface displacements observed by GPS, which requires a much weaker lithosphere than predicted by classical laws. Here we compare the plasticity of olivine aggregates deformed experimentally at mantle pressures and temperatures to that of single crystals and demonstrate that, depending on conditions of stress and temperature, strain accommodated through grain-to-grain interactions – here called intergranular strain – can be orders of magnitude larger than intracrystalline strain, which significantly weakens olivine strength. This result, extrapolated along mantle geotherms, suggests that intergranular plasticity could be dominant in most of the upper mantle. Consequently, the strength of olivine-rich aggregates in the upper mantle may be significantly lower than predicted by flow laws based on intracrystalline plasticity models.  相似文献

In situ X-ray diffraction was used to measure the isothermal bulk modulus at room conditions (KT0) of synthetic olivines with different iron contents. The chemical formulae of the olivine samples were (Fex,Mg1?x)2SiO4 with x = 0.45; 0.64; 0.82; 1, with 1% standard deviation (referenced as Fa45, Fa64, Fa82 and Fa100, respectively). All experiments were performed in the multi-anvil apparatus installed at NSLS beamline X17B2, to pressures up to about 7 GPa. Unit-cell volumes under hydrostatic conditions and differential stresses present in the samples were calculated using the method developed by Singh et al. (1998), and pressures measured using NaCl as a standard were then corrected for these stresses. Using a second-order Birch–Murnaghan equation of state, we obtained the isothermal bulk modulus of each composition: KT0Fa45=131.4±2.6 GPa, KT0Fa64=132.1±3.1 GPa, KT0Fa82=136.3±1.7 GPa and KT0Fa100=134.8±1.4 GPa. These values combined with data available in the literature show that the KT0 of Fe-rich olivines increases very slowly with the Fe content, but possibly not in a simple linear trend.  相似文献

Computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy is introduced as a faster, reliably and cost-reducing alternative to conventional electron microprobe analyses on kimberlite indicator minerals. The method is based on conventional scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, but due to extended counting times, optimised settings and computer-controlled particle recognition valid data can be obtained on a low amount of operator and machine time. A comparison of the results between both methods yields that computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy is able to investigate major and minor element concentrations in indicator minerals with almost the same precision as the electron microprobe.  相似文献
