This expository paper gathers some of the results obtained by the author in recent works in collaboration with Davide Ferrario and Vivina Barutello, focusing on the periodic n-body problem from the perspective of the calculus of variations and minimax theory. These researches were aimed at developing a systematic variational approach to the equivariant periodic n-body problem in the two and three-dimensional space. The purpose of this paper is to expose the main problems and achievements of this approach. We deal with the planar restricted circular problem of three bodies. We study trajectories in a small neighborhood of the Lagrange equilibrium point L
4 when mass ratio is close to Routh's value. In particular, we show that the case of proper degeneracy takes place and for most initial conditions trajectories are conditionally-periodic. We obtain an approximate representation of families of periodic solution emanating from the equilibrium point L
4. We also show that in the case of instability of L
4 the trajectories starting in a vicinity of L
4 remain in a finite domain forever. We give an upper bound of this domain. The goal of this paper is obtaining a solution of the Lambert problem in the restricted three-body problem described by the
Hill equations. This solution is based on the use of pre determinate reference orbits of different types giving the first
guess and defining the sought-for transfer type. A mathematical procedure giving the Lambert problem solution is described.
This procedure provides step-by-step transformation of the reference orbit to the sought-for transfer orbit. Numerical examples
of the procedure application to the transfers in the Sun–Earth system are considered. These examples include transfer between
two specified positions in a given time, a periodic orbit design, a halo orbit design, halo-to-halo transfers, LEO-to-halo
transfer, analysis of a family of the halo-to-halo transfer orbits. The proposed method of the Lambert problem solution can
be used for the two-point boundary value problem solution in any model of motion if a set of typical reference orbits can

We present a method for solving Kepler's equation for elliptical orbits that represents a gain in efficiency and accuracy compared with those currently in use. The gain is obtained through a starter algorithm which uses Mikkola's ideas in a critical range, and less costly methods elsewhere. A higher-order Newton method is used thereafter. Strong three-body interactions play a decisive role in the course of the dynamical evolution of triple systems having positive
as well as negative total energies. These interactions may produce qualitative changes in the relative motions of the components.
In triple systems with positive or zero total energies the processes of formation, disruption or exchange of the components
of binaries take place as the result of close approaches of the three single bodies or as the result of the passages of single
bodies past wide or hard binaries. In the triple systems with negative energies, the strong triple interactions may result
in an escape from the system as well as a formation of a hard final binary.
This paper summarizes the general results of the studies of the strong three-body interactions in the triple systems with
positive and negative energies. These studies were conducted at the Leningrad University Observatory by computer simulations

The regions of quasi-periodic motion around non-symmetric periodic orbits in the vicinity of the triangular equilibrium points
are studied numerically. First, for a value of the mass parameter less than Routh's critical value, the stability regions
determined by quasi-periodic motion are examined around the existing families of short (Ls

Many asteroids with a semimajor axis close to that of Mars have been discovered in the last several years. Potentially some of these could be in 1:1 resonance with Mars, much as are the classic Trojan asteroids with Jupiter, and its lesser-known horseshoe companions with Earth. In the 1990s, two Trojan companions of Mars, 5261 Eureka and 1998 VF31, were discovered, librating about the L5 Lagrange point, 60° behind Mars in its orbit. Although several other potential Mars Trojans have been identified, our orbital calculations show only one other known asteroid, 1999 UJ7, to be a Trojan, associated with the L4 Lagrange point, 60° ahead of Mars in its orbit. We further find that asteroid 36017 (1999 ND43) is a horseshoe librator, alternating with periods of Trojan motion. This asteroid makes repeated close approaches to Earth and has a chaotic orbit whose behavior can be confidently predicted for less than 3000 years. We identify two objects, 2001 HW15 and 2000 TG2, within the resonant region capable of undergoing what we designate “circulation transition”, in which objects can pass between circulation outside the orbit of Mars and circulation inside it, or vice versa. The eccentricity of the orbit of Mars appears to play an important role in circulation transition and in horseshoe motion. Based on the orbits and on spectroscopic data, the Trojan asteroids of Mars may be primordial bodies, while some co-orbital bodies may be in a temporary state of motion. 相似文献
