We exploit observations at 1.25 mm with the ESO–SEST telescope of a southern galaxy sample, selected from the IRAS PSC and complete to S 60=2 Jy, to derive the FIR and mm luminosity functions and the conditional probability distributions of FIR and mm luminosity of galaxies. The reliability of these estimates is ensured by the good observed correlation of the far-infrared and mm emissions. This detailed knowledge of the millimetric properties of galaxies is used to simulate the extragalactic sub-mm sky (background intensity, small-scale anisotropy signals and discrete source statistics), which is the target of a variety of ground-based and space observatories. We find, in particular, that a recent tentative detection of a sub-mm background would require, if confirmed, strong evolution with cosmic time of the galaxy long-wavelength emissivity. We finally discuss ways to test such evolution with present and forthcoming facilities: while emphasizing the difficulty of achieving this with large mm telescopes on the ground (because of the poor atmospheric conditions of current sub-mm sites), we mention an interesting opportunity with the long-wavelength camera on ISO . Preliminary results of deep surveys, both from space and from the ground, seem indeed to require excess emission in the past by dusty galaxies with respect to no-evolution predictions.  相似文献

An extremely sensitive all-sky survey will be carried out in the millimetre/submillimetre waveband by the forthcoming ESA mission Planck Surveyor . The main scientific goal of the mission is to make very accurate measurements of the spatial power spectrum of primordial anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background radiation; however, hundreds of thousands of distant dusty galaxies and quasars will also be detected. These sources are much more likely to be gravitationally lensed by intervening galaxies compared with sources discovered in surveys in other wavebands. Here the number of lenses expected in the survey is estimated, and techniques for discriminating between lensed and unlensed sources are discussed. A practical strategy for this discrimination is presented, based on exploiting the remarkable sensitivity and resolving power of large ground-based millimetre/submillimetre-wave interferometer arrays. More than a thousand gravitational lenses could be detected: a sample that would be an extremely valuable resource in observational cosmology.  相似文献

We present the first results of an ongoing spectroscopic survey of galaxies selected in the rest frame ultraviolet (UV). The source catalogue has been constructed from a flux-limited sample of stars, galaxies and QSOs imaged at 2000 Å in Selected Area 57 with the FOCA balloon-borne imaging camera. Accurate positions for the UV sources have been obtained by matching with optical counterparts using APM scans of the Palomar Sky Survey limited at B   20.5. Here we present results derived from optical spectroscopy conducted with the WIYN telescope and the WHT for 142 faint sources. The redshift distribution for this UV-selected sample extends over 0 <  z  < 0.5, and a high fraction of the sources show intense nebular emission lines and UV–optical colours bluer than normal Hubble sequence galaxies. Such UV-selected surveys are thus a very efficient way to locate and study intermediate-redshift galaxies undergoing intense star formation. Although our sample is currently small, we derive a rest frame UV luminosity function with a steep faint-end slope consistent with that found for late-type galaxies in optical samples. However, the integrated luminosity density derived implies a volume-averaged star formation rate higher than other recent estimates, assuming a normal initial mass function. If representative of other UV fields, as suggested by UV number count studies, our data imply that the local abundance of star-forming galaxies may have been underestimated, and consequently claims for strong evolution in the global star formation rate in the range 0 <  z  < 1 overstated. An intensive study of a large UV-selected sample is likely to reveal important information on the declining population of star-forming galaxies of all types.  相似文献

We analyse the window functions for the spherical harmonic mode estimators of all-sky, volume-limited surveys, considering evolutionary effects along the past light-cone which include the deviation of the distance scale from a linear relationship with redshift, linear peculiar velocity corrections, and linear evolution of the density perturbations. The spherical harmonic basis functions are considered, because they correspond most closely to the symmetries of typical survey geometries and of the light-cone effects we consider. Our results show substantial broadening of the windows over that expected by ignoring light-cone effects, indicating the difficulty of measuring the power spectrum independently from cosmology. We suggest that because of light-cone effects, deep redshift surveys should be analysed either in conjunction with CMBR data which determines the cosmological parameters, or by using a Bayesian likelihood scheme in which varying cosmological parameters and a simple parametrization of the primordial power spectrum are assumed as the priors, so that observed data can be mapped from redshift to real space. The derived power spectrum can then be compared with underlying models of fluctuation generation and growth in structure formation to evaluate both these models and the cosmological priors.  相似文献

We have reanalysed and compared the dipoles of the 1.2-Jy and 0.6-Jy (QDOT) IRAS galaxy samples. We find strong indications from both samples for (a) significant contributions to the gravitational field that shapes the Local Group motion from depths up to ∼ 170 h −1 Mpc and (b) a large-scale coherence of the dipole anisotropy, indications provided mainly by the fact that the differential dipoles of large equal-volume shells are aligned with the CMB dipole and exhibit significant dipole signals. The two IRAS dipoles are indistinguishable within 50 h −1 Mpc and beyond ∼ 130 h −1 Mpc while the QDOT dipole, having a lower flux limit, continues growing with respect to the 1.2-Jy sample up to ∼ 100 h −1 Mpc in agreement with Rowan-Robinson et al.  相似文献

We have investigated the redshift-space distortions in the optically selected Durham/UKST Galaxy Redshift Survey using the two-point galaxy correlation function perpendicular and parallel to the observer's line of sight, ξ(σ, π). On small, non-linear scales we observe an elongation of the constant ξ(σ, π) contours in the line-of-sight direction. This is a result of the galaxy velocity dispersion and is the common 'Finger of God' effect seen in redshift surveys. Our result for the one-dimensional pairwise rms velocity dispersion is 〈 w 21/2=416±36 km s−1, which is consistent with those from recent redshift surveys and canonical values, but inconsistent with SCDM or LCDM models. On larger, linear scales we observe a compression of the ξ(σ, π) contours in the line-of-sight direction. This is caused by the infall of galaxies into overdense regions, and the Durham/UKST data favours a value of (Ω0.6/ b )∼0.5, where Ω is the mean mass density of the Universe and b is the linear bias factor that relates the galaxy and mass distributions. Comparison with other optical estimates yields consistent results, with the conclusion that the data do not favour an unbiased critical-density universe.  相似文献

We report on the first observation of the Sunyaev–Zel'dovich (SZ) effect, a distortion of the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation (CMB) by hot electrons in clusters of galaxies, with the Diabolo experiment at the IRAM 30 m telescope. Diabolo is a dual-channel 0.1 K bolometer photometer dedicated to the observation of CMB anisotropies at 2.1 and 1.2 mm. A significant brightness decrement in the 2.1 mm channel is detected in the direction of three clusters (Abell 665, Abell 2163 and CL0016+16). With a 30 arcsec beam and 3 arcmin beamthrow, this is the highest angular resolution observation to date of the SZ effect. Interleaving integrations on targets and on nearby blank fields have been performed in order to check and correct for systematic effects. Gas masses can be directly inferred from these observations.  相似文献
