Numerical modelling was done at the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range, Canada, to test whether the dissolved RDX and nitrate detected
in groundwater come from the same sources, and to predict whether contamination poses a threat to the surface water receptors
near the site. Military live fire training activities may indeed pose a risk of contamination to groundwater resources, however
field investigations on military bases are quite recent, and little information is available on the long-term behaviour of
munition residues related contaminants. Very limited information was available about the contaminant source zones, which were
assigned based on our knowledge of current training activities. The RDX plume was well represented with the model, but the
heterogeneous distribution of nitrate concentrations was more difficult to reproduce. It was nonetheless determined that both
contaminants originate from the same areas. According to the model, both contaminants should reach the nearby river, but concentrations
in the river should remain very low if the source zone concentration does not change. Finally, the model allowed the recommendation
of a new location for the main bombing target, which would offer added protection to the river and the lake into which it

Soil erosion susceptibility assessment and validation using a geostatistical multivariate approach: a test in Southern Sicily 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A certain number of studies have been carried out in recent years that aim at developing and applying a model capable of assessing
water erosion of soil. Some of these have tried to quantitatively evaluate the volumes of soil loss, while others have focused
their efforts on the recognition of the areas most prone to water erosion processes. This article presents the results of
a research whose objective was that of evaluating water erosion susceptibility in a Sicilian watershed: the Naro river basin.
A geomorphological study was carried out to recognize the water erosion landforms and define a set of parameters expressing
both the intensity of hydraulic forces and the resistance of rocks/soils. The landforms were mapped and classified according
to the dominant process in landsurfaces affected by diffuse or linear water erosion. A GIS layer was obtained by combining
six determining factors (bedrock lithology, land use, soil texture, plan curvature, stream power index and slope-length factor)
in unique conditions units. A geostatistical multivariate approach was applied by analysing the relationships between the
spatial distributions of the erosion landforms and the unique condition units. Particularly, the density of eroded area for
each combination of determining factors has been calculated: such function corresponds, in fact, to the conditional probability
of erosion landforms to develop, under the same geoenvironmental conditions. In light of the obtained results, a general geomorphologic
model for water erosion in the Naro river basin can be depicted: cultivated areas in clayey slopes, having fine-medium soil
texture, are the most prone to be eroded; linear or diffuse water erosion processes dominate where the topography is favourable
to a convergent or divergent runoff, respectively. For each of the two erosion process types, a susceptibility map was produced
and submitted to a validation procedure based on a spatial random partition strategy. Both the success of the validation procedure
of the susceptibility models and the geomorphological coherence of the relationships between factors and process that such

Three-dimensional Layer-integrated Modelling of Estuarine Flows with Flooding and Drying 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Details are given of the refinement and application of a thee-dimensional (3-D) layer-integrated numerical model of tidal circulation, with the aim of simulating severe tidal conditions for practical engineering applications. The mode splitting strategy has been used in the model. A set of depth-integrated 2-D equations are first solved to give the pressure gradient, and the layer-integrated 3-D equations are then solved to obtain the vertical distributions of the flow velocities. Attention has been given to maintaining consistency of the physical quantities derived from the 2-D and 3-D equations. A TWO=layer mixing length turbulence model for the vertical shear stress distribution has been included in the model. Emphasis has been focused on applying the model to a real estuary, which is geometrically complicated and has large tidal ranges giving rise to extensive flooding and drying. The model has been applied to three examples, including: wind-driven flow in a rectangular lake, tidal circulation in a model rectangular harbour, and tidal circulation in a large estuary. During the period August 1985 to May 1986, phytoplankton in the southern Taiwan Strait was collected and studied for distributional variability in relation to hydrography. The results indicated that maximum standing crops of phytoplankton occurred in October and May due to the outgrowth of certain species of diatoms and blue-green algae. The majority of phytoplankton appeared in the water in the top 25 m and occurred in distinct clusters under the influence of water movement. Multivariate analysis indicated that hydrographic parameters, which accounted for the variability of phytoplankton distribution, varied seasonally. Vertical, spatial and temporal variabilities were also apparent. The close relationship between hydrography and algal distribution justifies the use of variations in the phytoplankton population as a useful tracer of water movement. 相似文献

Ensuring confidence in radionuclide-based sediment chronologies and bioturbation rates 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Sedimentary records of naturally occurring and fallout-derived radionuclides are widely used as tools for estimating both the ages of recent sediments and rates of sedimentation and bioturbation. Developing these records to the point of data interpretation requires careful sample collection, processing, analysis and data modeling. In this work, we document a number of potential pitfalls that can impact sediment core records and their interpretation. This paper is not intended as an exhaustive treatment of these potential problems. Rather, the emphasis is on potential problems that are not well documented in the literature, as follows: (1) the mere sampling of sediment cores at a resolution that is too coarse can result in an apparent diffusive mixing of the sedimentary record at rates comparable to diffusive bioturbation rates observed in many locations; (2) 210Pb profiles in slowly accumulating sediments can easily be misinterpreted to be driven by sedimentation, when in fact bioturbation is the dominant control. Multiple isotopes of different half lives and/or origin may help to distinguish between these two possible interpretations; (3) apparent mixing can occur due simply to numerical artifacts inherent in the finite difference approximations of the advection diffusion equation used to model sedimentation and bioturbation. Model users need to be aware of this potential problem. Solutions to each of these potential pitfalls are offered to ensure the best possible sediment age estimates and/or sedimentation and bioturbation rates can be obtained. 相似文献
