On sexual dimorphism in Paleoparadoxia tabatai

Abstract Upon studying the well preserved skulls referred to Paleoparadoxia tabatai from Japan, the short and low skull of the Yanagawa specimen requires an explanation. Six cranial and dental characters lead us to suggest that the Yanagawa individual is a female while the Izumi, Ohnohara, and Itsukaichi skulls are male. The important characters in the Yanagawa skull are its shortness and shallow depth, less pronounced sagittal and nuchal crests, smaller zygoma, and the small dentition with especially poorly erupted canines, most of which are indicative of weak masticatory musculature.     

Sustaining the “Societal and Scriptural Fence”: Cultural,Social, and Political Topographies of Same-Sex Marriage in Alabama

In June 2006, voters in Alabama overwhelmingly approved a statewide referendum that added a prohibition against same-sex marriage to the state's constitution. This research examines the Alabama vote by “placing” the politics of sexuality within the state's multifaceted web of cultural and social space. We fuse a traditional electoral geography approach with an overall postpositivist cultural and social perspective, beginning with an assessment of the politics of place by situating Alabama as a place with a long history of battles over the so-called culture wars. The cultural politics of the legislative debate and the geographic distribution of the actual vote are also examined within a socio-demographic context, drawing some comparisons from a similar vote in Georgia in 2004, another state in the American Deep South. Those opposed to same-sex marriage in Alabama made effective use of various social constructions that are deeply embedded within a “moral” geography, situating the state as a fenced-off bastion of “religious traditional values,” a common theme throughout the American South. In this vein, social boundaries and territory were demarcated as a powerful political act in Alabama, a strategy that situated the state as hetero-normatively “in place,” while deeming sexual minorities as “out of place.”     

Study of light signal receptor of Stephanopyxis palmeriana during sexual reproduction

We collected centric diatom Stephanopyxis palmeriana samples in coastal waters of Xiamen for characteristic red light/far red light (R/FR) phytochrome reactions to identify its photoreceptor in the course of sexual reproduction. The result showed that pre-illumination of 2-3h red light before darkness could induce sexualization of S.palmeriana, while the follow-up illumination of far red light could reverse the effect of red light, which is a featured reaction of phytochrome. The Southern Dot Blot was carried out to identify the type of phytochrome that induces the sexualization. The result also showed high homogeneity of DNA fragment of S. palmeriana with phyB, but phyA. This means the photoreceptor in the process of sexual reproduction of S. palmeriana is phytochrome B (phyB).

牙鲆dmrt1 基因的克隆及其与P450arom 基因的组织表达分析

通过基因组步移和3’RACE获得了牙鲆(Paralichthys olivaceus)dmrt1的cDNA全序列,该基因开放阅读框全长909bp,其编码的蛋白具有高度保守的DM结构域,5’UTR区含有性别相关转录因子Sox9和Sox5的结合位点。牙鲆dmrt1基因只在牙鲆的性腺中表达,且在精巢中的表达明显高于卵巢,表明牙鲆的dmrt1可能是一种性别相关基因。同时,对牙鲆的另一性别相关基因P450arom在成体各组织的表达分析结果表明,该基因除在牙鲆的性腺中有表达外,在肾脏、脾脏、鳃和脑等其他组织中也有不同程度的表达。牙鲆P450arom基因在性腺中的表达也存在两性差异,其表达模式与dmrt1的正好相反,在卵巢中的表达量明显高于精巢。     

Intraspecific Variability and Problematic Dimorphism in the Early Cretaceous (Valanginian) Ammonite Saynoceras verrucosum (d’Orbigny, 1841)

The population of Saynoceras verrucosum (d’Orbigny) from the Polish basin (W?wa? section, central Poland) shows no significant intraspecific variability. Dimorphism has not been found in this population. Statistical analyses of material from the shallow epicratonic Polish basin and the relatively deep Vocontian basin (southeastern France) indicated two populations. Forms from the Polish basin are somewhat more inflated and smaller than forms from the Vocontian basin.

近年来,基于性的“浪漫”与“亲密关系”受到国际学术界的广泛关注,并业已成为旅游学术研究中的热点话题。文章围绕国际旅游学术研究中的相关话题,从性旅游相关概念、旅游者特征、性旅游中的性工作者、旅游影响及公共管理等方面对国外相关研究文献进行了归纳和评析。研究表明,国外性旅游研究较为成熟,并开始形成较为完善的知识体系。通过本研究试图唤起中国学术界对性旅游的关注,并借鉴吸取国外经验,以期尽快提升中国性旅游研究水平和旅游公共管理的能力。
