The interaction of flow with an erodible bed in alluvial rivers and deep‐sea channels gives rise to a wide range of self‐formed morphologies, including channels, ripples, dunes, antidunes, alternate bars, multiple‐row bars, meandering and braiding. As the flow is invariably turbulent in field manifestations of these morphologies, there has been a tendency to assume that turbulence is necessary for them to form. While turbulence undoubtedly has an important influence when it is present, it is not necessary for any of these features. Indeed, all of these features can be formed by the morphodynamic interaction of purely laminar or nearly laminar flow with an erodible bed. This paper provides a survey and synthesis of a wide range of laminar or near‐laminar flow analogues of morphologies observed in the field. Laminar‐flow analogues of turbulent‐flow morphologies cannot and should not be expected to satisfy dynamic similarity in terms of all relevant dimensionless parameters. What is of more significance is the convergence of the underlying physics. It is illustrated in this paper that many existing theoretical frameworks for the explanation of turbulent‐flow morphodynamics require only relatively minor modification in order to adapt them to laminar flows. 相似文献

Aeolian architecture, bedform climbing and preservation space in the Cretaceous Etjo Formation, NW Namibia 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Sets of aeolian cross‐strata within the Cretaceous Etjo Formation of NW Namibia are bounded by a hierarchy of surfaces, the origin of which are ascribed to one of four processes related to aeolian bedform and erg behaviour. The base of the main aeolian succession is characterized by a basin‐wide erosional supersurface that formed in response to a period of aeolian deflation before the onset of the main phase of erg building. Interdune migration surfaces formed by draa migration are planar in sections parallel to the palaeowind and are inclined at up to 5° in an upwind direction (SW). Perpendicular to the palaeowind, interdune surfaces form 500‐m‐wide troughs, signifying crestline sinuosity within the original bedforms. Superimposition surfaces are inclined at 5–10° in a downwind direction and indicate the migration of crescentic oblique dunes over larger, slipfaceless transverse draa. Reactivation surfaces associated with minor changes in dune slipface orientation are distinct from other bounding surface types because overlying cross‐strata lie parallel to them, rather than downlap onto them. Analysis of the geometry of these bounding surfaces, together with the orientation of the cross‐strata within the sets that they bound, has enabled the detailed morphology of the original bedforms to be reconstructed. The maximum preserved thickness of individual aeolian sets varies systematically across the basin, from 52 m in the basin depocentre to only 8 m at the basin margin. The set architecture indicates that this spatial variation is primarily the result of decreased angles of bedform climb at the basin margin, rather than the presence of smaller bedforms. Similarly, a temporal reduction in the angle‐of‐climb, rather than a reduction in bedform size, is considered to be responsible for an upward decrease in preserved set thickness. Marine and river bedforms are rhythmic features driven by unidirectional or reversing currents and waves. They are ubiquitous on the floors of rivers, estuaries, coastal and marine settings. Despite a considerable history of dedicated studies, many aspects of their origin, development and dynamics are still the subject of scientific debate in various disciplines. The MARID conferences series hosts experts from geosciences, physics, engineering and other disciplines to provide a platform for the interdisciplinary exchange of fundamental and applied knowledge of marine and river dune dynamics. MARID VI took place in April 2019 in Bremen, Germany. Related scientific contributions are presented in this special issue of Earth Surface Processes and Landforms. An overview of the conference series and the specifics of MARID VI, as well as considerations in the context of equity, diversity and inclusion, are given. Six bathymetric transect profiles were drawn from the nautical charts of 1942, 1962 and 1992 to show that the nearshore seabed
remained unstable during the recent 50 years in the middle channel of the eastern entrance to the Qiongzhou Strait, South
China Sea. Our results demonstrate that the multi-year averaged seabed aggradational rate was 25 cm/a and erosion rate was
12.5 cm/a. Lateral migration rate of the sea bedform identified from the historical contours was about 100 m/a in the SE direction.
Bedform measurements were made using GPY Shallow Seismic Profiler in 1994 in the study area. The records revealed four types
of distinctive bedforms that were composed of fine and medium sands. The average spacing of large and small-scale sand dunes
is 416 m and 144 m and the average height remains 8.8 mand 4.9 m. The spatial and temporal equilibrium-range spectra of numerical
bedform records were applied to estimate short term celerity of bedform movement. Results indicate that large and small dunes
migrated at an average celerity of 0.02 cm/hr eastward and 0.09 cm/hr westward in the calm sea weather, while their celerity
can reach 53 cm/hr eastward during typhoon season and is only 0.008 cm/hr westward when NNE winds prevail. The results also
show that the larger the temporal and spatial scale is, the smaller the bedform movement celerity appears. On the other hand,
the smaller-scale bedform celerity of the present study is much greater than that of flume, empirical and theoretical data,
but close to the wind tunnel and field-measured data of similar grain size. 相似文献

The characteristics and effects of large-scale flow structures developed in the benthic boundary layer downstream from large topographic features were analysed throughout a tidal cycle. The observed signature of the macro-turbulent features consisted of streamwise modules of low horizontal velocity and high suspended sediment concentration (SSC), alternating with modules of high horizontal velocity and low SSC. These modules extended 10 to 20 m streamwise and exceeded 1 m vertically, and are believed to be related to flow separation effects over large bedforms upstream of the deployment site. The macroscale flow modules intensified the ‘ burst-like ’ turbulent events and favoured sediment transport. ‘ Ejection-like ’ events were magnified during modules of decreasing horizontal velocity and increasing turbidity, whereas ‘ sweep-like ’ events were magnified during modules of increasing horizontal velocity and decreasing SSC. The enhanced turbidity of the macroscale modules may be the result of enhanced upward diffusion of sediment by ejection events, whereas the low-turbidity modules may be induced by increased downward transport of suspended sediment by sweep events. These hypotheses were supported by cross-spectral analysis performed on velocity and suspended sediment concentration time-series recorded at the site. An enhanced (negative) contribution of outward and inward interaction events to the Reynolds stress, compared to those reported in uniform BBLs, resulted in ‘ abnormally ’ low stress values. 相似文献

根据 198 0至 2 0 0 0年间数次专项调查获得的高分辨率地球物理、沉积学等资料 ,并结合水动力环境的分析 ,探讨了东海扬子浅滩砂质底形的成因、形态特征、活动性以及发育的地层年代。研究表明 ,扬子浅滩砂质海底广泛发育沙波地貌 ,按其发育规模可以分为沙波和大型波痕 2类 ,大型波痕按其形态又可分为直线形、弯曲形和格子形 3种。平坦宽阔的地形、丰富的中细砂物源以及较强的潮流和风暴浪流是沙波地貌发育的有利环境条件。柱状岩芯分析和年代测定表明 ,发育沙波地貌的物质的沉积始于冰消期晚期 ,即 10~ 11KaB .P ,全新世中、晚期该区继续接受砂质沉积。扬子浅滩发育的沙波地貌与现今的动力环境相适应 ,仍处于发育和运移状态。 相似文献

The outline and trend of 6566 subglacial bedforms in the New York Drumlin Field have been digitized from digital elevation data. A spatial predictive model has been used to extend values of bedform elongation over an area measuring 200 km × 110 km. The resulting surface is used in conjunction with depth‐to‐bedrock data and an assumed duration of ice residence to test three proposed controls on bedform elongation. Upon comparison, the resulting display of morphometry is best explained by differences in ice velocity across the field of study. The existence of multiple zones of fast‐moving ice located along the southern margin of the Laurentide Ice Sheet is implied by the observed patterns of bedform elongation and orientation. We present two interpretations that are consistent with the observations. First, enhanced basal sliding caused by decreasing effective pressure near a calving margin is suggested as a possible mechanism by which localized fast ice flow is initiated and maintained. Second, topographically controlled ice streams likely occupied the fjord‐like troughs of the Appalachian Upland northern rim. Contrary to previous understanding of the Laurentide southern margin in New York State, the resulting palaeoglaciological reconstruction illustrates a dynamic mosaic of ice stream and/or outlet glacier activity. The morphological characteristics of small-scale bedforms were measured by means of an acoustic profiling sonar on the Dafeng tidal flat,Jiangsu,in 2009,and in the Jiulong Estuary,Xiamen,in 2010,respectively.The "multi-threshold value" method was utilized to reveal the morphological undulations along which bedforms were present.Analyses of the datasets obtained show that:(1) sand ripples can have irregular shapes,and(2) changes in bedform morphology are small within a single tidal cycle but may be significant over several tidal cycles.Fractal and variogram analyses of the seabed roughness revealed the existence of a significant relationship between current speed and the fractal dimension of the seabed roughness.As current speed increases,seabed roughness increases with a trend of smaller-scale bottom structures being replaced by larger-scale structures.Furthermore,the surface of the larger-scale bottom structures can either become smooth due to the absence of smaller-scale features or become rougher due to the presence of superimposed smaller-scale structures. 相似文献
