The Pebble Creek Formation (previously known as the Bridge River Assemblage) comprises the eruptive products of a 2350 calendar year B.P. eruption of the Mount Meager volcanic complex and two rock avalanche deposits. Volcanic rocks of the Pebble Creek Formation are the youngest known volcanic rocks of this complex. They are dacitic in composition and contain phenocrysts of plagioclase, orthopyroxene, amphibole, biotite and minor oxides in a glassy groundmass. The eruption was episodic, and the formation comprises fallout pumice (Bridge River tephra), pyroclastic flows, lahars and a lava flow. It also includes a unique form of welded block and ash breccia derived from collapsing fronts of the lava flow. This Merapi-type breccia dammed the Lillooet River. Collapse of the dam triggered a flood that flowed down the Lillooet Valley. The flood had an estimated total volume of 109 m3 and inundated the Lillooet Valley to a depth of at least 30 m above the paleo-valley floor 5.5 km downstream of the blockage. Rock avalanches comprising mainly blocks of Plinth Assemblage volcanic rocks (an older formation making up part of the Mount Meager volcanic complex) underlie and overlie the primary volcanic units of the Formation. Both rock avalanches are unrelated to the 2350 B.P. eruption, although the post-eruption avalanche may have its origins in the over-steepened slopes created by the explosive phase of the eruption. Much of the stratigraphic complexity evident in the Pebble Creek Formation results from deposition in a narrow, steep-sided mountain valley containing a major river. The uniaxial compressive strength of intact rock is the main parameter used in almost all engineering projects. The uniaxial compressive strength test requires high quality core samples of regular geometry. The standard cores cannot always be extracted from weak, highly fractured, thinly bedded, foliated and/or block-in-matrix rocks. For this reason, the simple prediction models become attractive for engineering geologists. Although, the sandstone is one of the most abundant rock type, a general prediction model for the uniaxial compressive strength of sandstones does not exist in the literature. The main purposes of the study are to investigate the relationships between strength and petrographical properties of sandstones, to construct a database as large as possible, to perform a logical parameter selection routine, to discuss the key petrographical parameters governing the uniaxial compressive strength of sandstones and to develop a general prediction model for the uniaxial compressive strength of sandstones. During the analyses, a total of 138 cases including uniaxial compressive strength and petrographic properties were employed. Independent variables for the multiple prediction model were selected as quartz content, packing density and concavo–convex type grain contact. Using these independent variables, two different prediction models such as multiple regression and ANN were developed. Also, a routine for the selection of the best prediction model was proposed in the study. The constructed models were checked by using various prediction performance indices. Consequently, it is possible to say that the constructed models can be used for practical purposes.  相似文献

The Comblanchien limestone is a well-known building stone that deserves a quantitative characterization in order to be able to certify its origin. We compare petrographical and geochemical characteristics of limestones commercialized under the name of Comblanchien to those of one of their competitors (VATC, a Portuguese coated grain-bearing limestone). From macroscopic and microscopic observations, the distinction is somehow difficult but the coated grain-bearing Comblanchien samples have δ13C values (from +1.75 to +2.25‰) different from those of the VATC sample (negative δ13C value). As an example of application of these results, three samples from a building site near Paris are also studied in order to verify their provenance. We conclude that they do not come from quarries from the Comblanchien area, but likely from Portugal. The study shows that a detailed analysis of building limestones may provide a robust tool for discriminating between currently mined stones of different provenances, and thus open the possibility to attach to a given limestone a fingerprint, an identity card, and if required a commercial label.  相似文献

The Senafe area reveals a pile of stratoid volcanic rocks (“Senafe” ignimbrite), of considerable extent and thickness, which are the products of the first volcanic event which took place in this sector, close to the upper margin of the Afar escarpment. The Senafe ignimbrite is composed prevalently of trachyte with differing degrees of alkalinity: trachy-dacite of transitional series, and trachyte s.s. of mildly alkaline series. K/Ar radiometric measurements carried out on three samples give ages ranging between 21 and 23 Ma (Lower Miocene) and show that the Senafe ignimbrite with transitional character is an extension of the Serae rhyolite of the Central Eritrean Plateau, and may also be correlated with the Miocene Alaji rhyolite of the Central Ethiopian Plateau. In contrast, the more alkaline ignimbrite shows good correlations with the trachyte emitted by the Miocene Termaber alkaline central volcanoes of Ethiopia. It is noted that, in the course of the Miocene volcanism in Eritrea, the volumetric ratio between associated basalt and ignimbrite diminishes from west to east, i.e., approaching the Afar escarpment. The stratoid volcanic rocks are injected by thick trachytic and rhyolitic dykes. As radiometric measurements on them could not be performed, their age is unknown, but it is probably more recent than that of the injected ignimbrite, according to Merla and Minucci [Merla, G., Minucci, E., 1938. Missione geologica nel Tigrai. In: La serie dei terreni, vol. 1. Regia Accademia d’Italia, Centro Studi per l’Africa Orientale Italiana, Rome, Italy, pp. 1–362] for similar dykes and domes occurring in the Adwa-Axum area (Tigrai, Ethiopia), not far from Senafe.A section is devoted to the dyke feeders of the Eritrean and Adwa-Axum volcanism.  相似文献

The Anacleto Formation is the uppermost unit of the Neuquén Group, which makes up the foreland stage infill of the Neuquén Basin, during Late Cretaceous. The detailed sedimentological study performed in the excellent outcrops of this formation on the eastern border of the basin allowed the identification of eight fluvial lithofacies, grouped into six facies associations. A meandering fluvial system with palaeo flows from the SW can be interpreted from distribution of facies associations, architectural framework, channel/floodplain ratio, etc. The compositional analysis of the sandstones was performed by mean of petrographic characterization and modal analysis. Sandstones of the Anacleto Fm are mainly subarkosic, arkosic, lithic arenites and, to a lesser extent, sublitoarenites (Q54-F25-R21; Q52-F24-L25). The composition suggests underlying igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks in the main source area. Sedimentological and petrographic analyses, jointly with palaeocurrents orientations suggest that high areas of the North Patagonian Massif were the main source of the fluvial system. The diagenetic stages interpreted from the petrographic characters, SEM observations and X-ray diffraction determine eodiagenesis and telodiagenesis, which are consistent with the burial history of the Neuquén Group. Furthermore, palaeoclimatic considerations based on compositional analysis suggest semiarid to semihumid conditions for the deposition of the Anacleto Fm. These conditions are also supported by clay mineralogy that confirmed smectite as dominant species. A strong climatic seasonality is also deduced by the presence of calcrete levels and frequent discharge channels.  相似文献

An integrated petrographical and petrophysical study was carried out on a set of 35 outcrop chalk samples, covering a wide range of lithologies and textures. In this study various chalk rock-types have been characterized, in terms of microtextures and porous network, by integrating both geological, sediment-petrological and petrophysical data, including porosity, permeability, low-field NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance), MICP and specific surface area (BET) measurements. The data allow an in depth understanding of the NMR signal of chalks, with a focus on tight chalks, including all low reservoir quality chalks independently of their sedimentological and/or diagenetic history. The study aims to develop an NMR-based approach to characterize a broad range of chalk samples. The provided laboratory low-field NMR chalk classification can be used as a guide to interpret NMR logging data.Based on the petrographical and petrophysical analysis, 6 groups of samples were identified, each of them characterized by a unique NMR signature: (1) micritic chalks, (2) grainy chalks, (3) cemented chalks, (4) marl-seam chalks, (5) argillaceous chalks and (6) silicified chalk. NMR T2 distributions were linked to pore body size and T2 logarithmic (T2lm) was calculated. It is apparent that tight chalks, whether their characteristics are sedimentological or diagenetic, yield smaller pore body sizes (T2lm < 20 ms), as well as narrower pore throats (average radius < 150 nm) and lower permeability values (typically below 0.2 mD). Grainy chalks possess T2 distributions reflecting larger pore sizes (T2lm > 60 ms) and pore throats (average radius > 290 nm) and higher permeabilities (up to 13 mD). The marl-seam chalk samples yield bimodal T2 distributions, with a first peak related to the micritic matrix pores and a second peak related to intraparticle pores within fossils. For all samples, permeability was inferred from NMR spectra using SDR (Schlumberger Doll Research) model.  相似文献

The chemical and mineralogical composition of the Sidi Aïch Formation sandstones in central and southwestern Tunisia has been investigated in order to infer the provenance and tectonic setting, as well as to appraise the influence of weathering. The sixteen studied samples are mainly composed of quartz, feldspar, kaolinite and/or illite. Sidi Aïch sandstones are mainly arkosic, potassic feldspar-rich and immature. Much of the feldspar was transformed to kaolinite. Concerning the relation between sandstone detrital composition and their depositional setting, the Sidi Aïch Formation sandstone in the major studied localities, probably accumulated in relatively proximal small basins within the continental interior. However, for the Khanguet El Ouara study site, sandstones may have been deposited in a foreland basin which received recycled sediments from an adjacent orogenic belt. The source area may have included quartzose sedimentary rocks. The dominance of quartz and enrichment in immobile elements suggest that the depositional basins were associated with a passive margin. The petrography and geochemistry reflect a stable continental margin and sediments were derived from granitic and pegmatitic sources located in the southern parts of the Gafsa basin. High values for the chemical index of alteration (CIA) indicate that recycling processes might have been important. Particularly high CIA values in the Garet Hadid locality indicate more intense chemical alteration, either due to weathering processes or tectonic control.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to reconstruct the paleoenviromnent during formation of the deposit at Amynteon–Ptolemaida based mainly on its petrographic but also supported by its paleobotanic character and fossils found in the lignite beds themselves. The deposit of Amynteon occurs in the northern part of the elongated basin of Ptolemaida–Amynteon. The type of lignite formation is, in general terms, similar to the deposit of Ptolemaida, and the lignite is present in the Pleistocene strata of the basin. The alternating nature of lignite and interburden is an important characteristic of the deposit. In this study, we selected 20 samples of lignite from a representative drillhole, namely B-258 in order to discern its petrography. Optical microscopy showed that the huminite group macerals are dominant, ranging from 42.5% to 95.3%. Humotelinite is present in low to high quantities (12.0–79.5%), followed closely by humodetrinite. Humocollinite is present in very small amounts. In addition, macerals of the liptinite and inertinite groups are found in small concentrations, with a few exceptions.A number of indices, such as gelification index (GI), vegetation index (VI), groundwater index (GWI), tissue preservation index (TPI), and their ratios (e.g., VI/GWI, TPI/GI), were used to reconstruct the conditions prevailing during peat formation. The results indicate that the paleoenvironment was mainly limnic at the initial stages and transitioned to limnotelmatic with occasional rheotrophic conditions. The organic matter responsible for lignite formation developed mainly in a forested swamp environment with occasional transitions either towards a wet limnic (open water) or a drier telmatic environment.  相似文献

The carbon, oxygen, and strontium isotope compositions of carbonate rocks from the upper Miocene Kudankulam Formation, southern India, were measured to understand palaeoenvironment and carbonate diagenesis of this formation. Both carbon and oxygen isotope ratios of various carbonate phases including whole rocks, ooids, molluscan mold-fill and sparry pore-fill calcite cements are depleted in 18O and 13C compared to those of contemporaneous seawater, indicating that the Kudankulam carbonates underwent extensive meteoric diagenesis. Based on δ13C and δ18O values for sparry calcite cements (pore-fill and molluscan mold-fill) formed in the meteoric diagenetic realm (δ13C from −7.8‰ to −6.0‰ and −9.0‰ to −7.0‰; δ18O from −9.2‰ to −6.5‰ and −9.4‰ to −2.6‰, respectively), it is interpreted that the diagenetic system was open and was proximal to the vadose water recharge zone. The negative δ18O values of various carbonate components (about −9.4‰ to −4.1‰ for whole rocks; about −8.4‰ to −2.6‰ for ooids) suggest that during the late Miocene the paleoclimate of the study area was humid, unlike today, probably due to the intense Indian monsoon system. The carbon isotope compositions (−7.9‰ to −3.6‰ for whole rocks; −4.9‰ to −1.5‰ for ooids) are consistent with the interpretation that the paleo-ecosystem comprised a significant proportion of C4 type plants, supporting a scenario of expansion of C4 plants during the late Miocene in the Indian subcontinent as far south as the southern tip of India. The 87Sr/86Sr ratios of the Kudankulam carbonates (0.70920 to 0.72130) are much greater than those of the contemporaneous or modern seawater (between 0.7089 and 0.7091) and show a general decrease up-sequence. Such high Sr isotope ratios indicate significant radiogenic 87Sr influx to the system from the Archean rocks exposed in the drainage area, implying that the deep-seated Archean rocks were already exposed in southern India by the late Miocene.  相似文献
