Coral islands formed of largely unconsolidated sands only a few metres above sea level are thought to be particularly vulnerable to sea-level rise consequent upon global warming. However, scenarios which predict catastrophic flooding and loss of island area need reassessment, particularly in the light of the continued downwards revision of projected rates of future sea-level rise. Revised questions concern the interactions between reef growth and sea-level change, biophysical constraints on coral growth, and the importance to reef systems of potential changes in the magnitude, frequency and location of tropical cyclones and hurricanes. It is clear that most reefs have the growth potential to meet even the highest of future sea-level rise scenarios, but too little is known about physiological and physical constraints to reef growth to adequately evaluate the importance of these two factors in constraining this potential at the present time. Future sea-level rise in the tropical oceans, and coral reef responses, will take place against a backdrop of inter-regional differences in Holocene sea levels, resulting from the varying interaction of eustatic and hydro-isostatic processes. These differences have generated varying constraints on the development of modern reefs and varying inherited topographies upon which future sea-level changes will be superimposed. These controls are particularly important in assessing differences in vulnerability to future sea-level rise for reef islands in the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. 相似文献

The Conductivity Test — Determining the Membrane-toxic Properties of Substances A new biotest system is introduced which is specific in terms of the measured effect but not in terms of the applied organisms. The system is able to detect the effect of membrane-toxic compounds e.g. detergents, organic solvents, and radical formers. Released into the environment, these substances damage biological membranes and therefore cause ion leakage into a surrounding medium. Ion leakage is taken as a measure for membrane damage and is determined as an increase of the electrical conductivity in the medium (conductivity test). The results presented for the tensides benzalkonium chloride, LAS (linear alkylbenzenesulfonate), and APG (alkylpolyglycoside) demonstrate the capability of the conductivity test to distinguish between the differing toxicological potential of these membrane-toxic substances. In contrast to most of the conventional biotests, the endpoint of the conductivity test is independent of a specific organism. This independence is demonstrated by the results obtained with benzalkonium chloride treatment of Elodea canadensis, Lemna minor, and Salvinia natans. The conductivity test represents a versatile, easy to handle biotest system for the assessment of ecotoxicological effects caused by membrane-toxic substances. 相似文献

The relationship between the daily values of global radiation measured at the ground in the vicinity of Budapest and in the Hungarian Great Plain and two kinds of cloud parameters determined on the basis of METEOSAT analogue paper pictures was studied for the period between November 1981 and July 1983. One of the cloud parameters, the cloud coverage given in tenths, has a quadratic relationship with the surface global radiation. The other cloud parameter, the relative brightness, is in a good linear connection with the global radiation. The advantage of the first parameter is that its determination does not demand any technical equipment, but the second parameter is more objective. The comparison of the calculated global radiation values with the data measured shows that the precision of the formulae determined is good in both cases. 相似文献

Urban areas compete with one another for people, goods, capital, ideas and other inputs of economic activity. Under the rubric
of globalization, instead of only maintaining or improving the initial stock of assets in a city, the power of a place to
attract outside flows of economic activity from elsewhere is increasingly important to economic development. Similarly, global
or world cities are characterized as the command and control points through which these global economic flows operate. In
response to the heightened mobility of highly-skilled labor across national borders, research has begun to examine the role
of international human capital as an economic flow. This paper will examine the role of places in determining where the highly-skilled
go in the global economy by viewing global city command and control functions as requiring unique labor flows. By reviewing
the evidence found in the literature, we can better understand the potential for urban areas to compete for highly-skilled
labor in the global economy. Known indicators of place attractiveness are assessed to examine the relationship between the
economic trajectories of cities and their labor requirements. Cities are situated between firms and states as the key place-based
actors which influence the mobility of highly-skilled labor. Finally, the paper also examines measurement issues and methodological

Geoscientific Information Systems (GIS) provide tools to quantitatively analyze and integrate spatially referenced information
from geological, geophysical, and geochemical surveys for decision-making processes. Excellent coverage of well-documented,
precise and good quality data enables testing of variable exploration models in an efficient and cost effective way with GIS
tools. Digital geoscientific data from the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) are being used widely as spatial evidence in
exploration targeting, that is ranking areas based on their exploration importance. In the last few years, spatial analysis
techniques including weights-of-evidence, logistic regression, and fuzzy logic, have been increasingly used in GTK’s mineral
exploration and geological mapping projects. Special emphasis has been put into the exploration for gold because of the excellent
data coverage within the prospective volcanic belts and because of the increased activity in gold exploration in Finland during
recent years. In this paper, we describe some successful case histories of using the weights-of-evidence method for the Au-potential
mapping. These projects have shown that, by using spatial modeling techniques, exploration targets can be generated by quantitatively
analyzing extensive amounts of data from various sources and to rank these target areas based on their exploration potential. 相似文献
