Four hundred inoceramids have been collected in the geological site at Tercis, where the Campanian–Maastrichtian boundary has been recently defined. At Tercis, a distinct drop of the adult size of inoceramids is observed between levels 111 and 117 and two turnovers of faunal composition were documented between levels 94 and 96 and between levels 111 and 117; the latter interval encompasses the stage boundary. The recognised inoceramid assemblages are very close to those known from North America, allowing better correlation than before between the two domains in the interval 77–70 Ma. The presence of these faunas perfectly located in the section leads to consider the Tercis section as the best known reference for this fossil group, the surprisingly good correlative potential of which has still to be considered in many areas.  相似文献

The litho- and biostratigraphy of the Craie de Villedieu Formation (Coniacian-Santonian)of western France are described in detail. The formation is subdivided into three members each containing a number of lithologically distinct named hardgrounds and marker beds. These constitute an onlapping sequence that thins from > 15 m in the NE around Cangey and Villedieu-le-Château, to < 2 m in the SW around St Michel-sur-Loire, a distance of 70 km. Thickness variation is related to the interaction of differential subsidence with eustatic transgression. Comparison with the Chalk Rock Formation of southern England indicates that transgressive and regressive hardground suites may be differentiated on bed geometry and hardground surface characteristics. The Craie de Villedieu rests everywhere on a regional hardground that coincides with the Turonian/Coniacian boundary in expanded successions, but probably marks a significant hiatus. South-west of Tours, onlap results in Santonian strata resting disconformably on strata of Turonian age. The basal Craie de Villedieu contains a succession of three Coniacian ammonite faunas characterized by Peroniceras and Forresteria (Harleites) (oldest), Gauthiericeras margae (Schlüter), and Protexanites (youngest). Volviceramus ex gr. involutus (J. de C. Sowerby) occurs with the two uppermost ammonite assemblages. A Santonian ammonite fauna dominated by Placenticeras polyopsis (Dujardin) occurs with Texanites gallicus Collignon and common Cladoceramus in the middle of the formation. Cordiceramus ex gr. cordiformis (J. de C. Sowerby) is recorded with Santonian ammonites in the upper part of the formation. A correlation with the Micraster zones of chalk facies is suggested, based on the inoceramid stratigraphy. The record of T. gallicus in association with Cladoceramus affords the first direct evidence for the position of the base of the Santonian in the Anglo-Paris Basin.  相似文献

The stratigraphic distribution of the principal Upper Cretaceous facies in Sardinia ispresented, with special reference to the eastern part of the Island. Included are remarks on the mid-Cretaceous tectonic activity, which marks the base of the Upper Cretaceous depositional cycle. The presence of Upper Santonian and Lower Maastrichtian (the latter represented by marls with sparse turbidite interbeds) in the Lanaitto syncline (Oliena) is documented. Both contain outer-shelf assemblages rich in planktic Foraminifera. Recognition of rare detrital glaucophane in the Maastrichtian sandstones suggests a source area affected by high-pressure metamorphism, possibly corresponding to the southward extension of alpine Corsica. The Tertiary conglomerates exposed near Oliena include pebbles of facies (Campanienand Upper Maastrichtian rudistid limestones with larger Foraminifera) unknown in outcrop. A preliminary study of the rudists suggests a faunal exchange between different palaeobio-geographical provinces belonging, respectively, to the West European and Adriatic Plates.A palaeontological appendix contains remarks on some representatives of the family Heterohelicidae and on one species of Gunnarites found in the Lower Maastrichtian.

A combined biostratigraphic model comprising 12 biozones is proposed for the Berriasian–Bedoulian (lower Aptian) shallow-platform deposits of the newly defined Fahliyan, Sar Bisheh, Ghari, Gadvan and Chahoo formations in the Zagros fold-thrust belt. Six biozones are established for the benthic foraminifers, four plus one subzone (taxon-range zone) for the dasycladalean algae and three for the tintinnids. The top and base of these biozones are calibrated with Sr-isotope numerical dating. The dataset is founded on outcrops and subsurface data in the Khuzestan, Fars and Bandar Abbas areas. High resolution biostratigraphic studies reveal that a sedimentary break corresponding to an exposure is present at the base of the Berriasian across the platform, and becomes younger from west toward the east. Another diachronous regional hiatus is detected on top of the Sar Bisheh Formation. Dated late Valanginian pro parte, it is the largest hiatus occurring in the Fars area. This study demonstrates that the boundary between the Sar Bisheh Formation and the Ghari/Chahoo formations, respectively covering the former Lower Fahliyan and Upper Fahliyan/Gadvan-Dariyan formations, is Hauterivian, not Barremian as stated by previous authors. It also shows that the Gadvan Formation does not reach the Aptian, contrary to previous statements. Sr-isotope stratigraphy offers a comparable resolution to that achieved by biostratigraphy. Combining the two methods results in a better resolution, enabling to estimate the depositional rates and importance of missing intervals.  相似文献

The Ilerdian–Middle Cuisian sedimentary succession of the Seyitgazi region, southern Eskişehir (Central Anatolia, Turkey) is composed of claystones, limestones and clayey limestones. It contains abundant benthic foraminifera, particularly species of Alveolina. From this succession, 28 species of Alveolina d’Orbigny are described and their comparative stratigraphic distribution with the Alveolina species in the Tethyan Eocene is documented. Generally, Ilerdian–Cuisian Alveolina assemblages of the Seyitgazi region have close affinities with coeval Alveolina assemblages described in different studies from the Tethyan Province. The Ilerdian unit of the study area is characterized by Alveolina species such as Glomalveolina lepidula, Glomalveolina minutula, G. karsica, Alveolina vredenburgi, A. ellipsoidalis, A. avellana, A. aff. minervensis, A. dedolia, A. moussoulensis, A. subpyrenaica, A. laxa, A. aragonensis, A. varians, A. ilerdensis, A. trempina, A. citrea, A. pisella and A. decipiens. Likewise, the Early Middle Cuisian unit is represented by G. minutula, A. oblonga, A. schwageri, A. haymanensis, A. canavarii, A. aff. coudurensis, A. ruetimeyeri, A. muscatensis, A. cremae, A. bayburtensis and A. lehneri.  相似文献

A total of 165 samples were collected from the Qom Formation investigated in a stratigraphic section north of Deh Namak, in Central Iran. From these, 35 genera and 47 species of benthic foraminifera were identified. The age of the studied section is Early Miocene (Aquitanian to Early Burdigalian) based on the occurrence of Borelis melo curdica, Meandropsina anahensis, Meandropsina iranica, Elphidium sp. 14, Peneroplis farsensis, and Triloculina tricarinata. The thickness of the Qom Formation is 401 m of which 161.2 m is early Burdigalian in age. Foraminiferal assemblages in the Deh Namak section are referable to the Borelis melo group-Meandropsina iranica Assemblage Zone and Miogypsinoides-Archaias-Valvulinid Assemblage Zone of [Adams, T.D., Bourgeois, F., 1967. Asmari biostratigraphy. Iranian Oil Operating Companies, Geological and Exploration Division, Report1074 (unpublished) 1–37.] described originally from the Asmari Formation.  相似文献
