Saturn's largest moon, Titan, provides an interesting opportunity to study how dense atmospheres interact with the surrounding plasma environment. Without an intrinsic magnetic field, this satellite's nitrogen-rich atmosphere is relatively unprotected from plasma interactions. Therefore, the energy-deposition rate is important for understanding chemistry and dynamics in Titan's atmosphere. Since the plasma environment can vary significantly we focus here on the T18 Titan encounter using in-situ data from instruments on board the Cassini spacecraft. These instruments cannot provide in-situ information below the spacecraft closest approach altitude (∼>960 km) so we use the Cassini magnetospheric imaging instrument (MIMI) ion-neutral camera (INCA) to remotely image energetic hydrogen particle fluxes (20-80 keV) at altitudes below Titan closest approach. We also use the MIMI low-energy magnetosphere measurements system (LEMMS) to measure the incident ion fluxes as the spacecraft approaches Titan and combine these data sets with an atmospheric model to first reproduce INCA images. We then use this model to calculate the energy-deposition profiles for the observed incident proton flux. Our model is able to reproduce the INCA observations and give the energy density deposited vs. altitude in Titan's atmosphere; however, we find that the incident fluxes and energy-deposition profiles vary significantly during the encounter.  相似文献

Atmospheric parameters, such as pressure (P), temperature (T) and density (ρP/T), affect the development of extensive air showers initiated by energetic cosmic rays. We have studied the impact of atmospheric variations on extensive air showers by means of the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. The rate of events shows a 10% seasonal modulation and 2% diurnal one. We find that the observed behaviour is explained by a model including the effects associated with the variations of P and ρ. The former affects the longitudinal development of air showers while the latter influences the Molière radius and hence the lateral distribution of the shower particles. The model is validated with full simulations of extensive air showers using atmospheric profiles measured at the site of the Pierre Auger Observatory.  相似文献

We used MGS-MOC and MRO-MARCI daily mapping images of the North Polar Region of Mars from 16 August 2005 (Ls = 270°) to 21 May 2009 (Ls = 270°), covering portions of three consecutive martian years (MY 27-MY 29), to observe the seasonal behavior of the polar ice cap and atmospheric phenomena. The rate of cap regression was similar in MY 28 and MY 29, but was advanced by 3.5° of Ls (∼7-8 sols) in MY 29. The spatial and temporal behaviors of dust and condensate clouds were similar in the two years and generally in accord with prior years. Dust storms (>100 km2) were observed in all seasons, with peak activity occurring at Ls = 10-20° from 50°N to 70°N and at Ls = 135-140° from 70°N to 90°N. The most active quadrant was 0-90°W in MY 28, shifting to 180-270°W in MY 29. The majority of regional storms in both years developed in longitudes from 10°W to 60°W. During late summer the larger storms obscure the North Polar Region in a cloud of dust that transitions to north polar hood condensate clouds around autumnal equinox.Changes in the distribution of perennial ice deposits, especially in Olympia Planum, were observed between the 2 years, with the MY 29 ice distribution being the most extensive observed to date. Modeling suggests that the small, bright ice patches on the residual cap are not the result of slope or elevation effects. Rather we suggest that they are the result of local meteorological effects on ice deposition. The annual darkening and brightening of peripheral areas of the residual cap around summer solstice can be explained by the sublimation of a brighter frost layer revealing an underlying darker, ice rich layer that itself either sublimes to reveal brighter material below or acts as a cold trap, attracting condensation of water vapor that brightens the surface. An alternative explanation invokes transport and deposition of dust on the surface from the cap interior, and later removal of that dust. The decrease in cap albedo and accompanying increase in near surface atmospheric stability may be related to the annual minimum of polar storm activity near northern summer solstice.  相似文献

We have developed a numerical model for assessing the lifetime of ice deposits in martian caves that are open to the atmosphere. Our model results and sensitivity tests indicate that cave ice would be stable over significant portions of the surface of Mars. Ice caves on Earth commonly occur in lava tubes, and Mars has been significantly resurfaced by volcanic activity during its history, including the two main volcanic provinces, the Tharsis and Elysium rises. These areas, known or suspected of having subsurface caves and related voids are among the most favorable regions for the occurrence of ice stability. The martian ice cave model predicts regions which, if caves occur, would potentially be areas of astrobiological importance as well as possible water sources for future human missions to Mars.  相似文献

We have developed a one-dimensional thermochemical kinetics and diffusion model for Jupiter’s atmosphere that accurately describes the transition from the thermochemical regime in the deep troposphere (where chemical equilibrium is established) to the quenched regime in the upper troposphere (where chemical equilibrium is disrupted). The model is used to calculate chemical abundances of tropospheric constituents and to identify important chemical pathways for CO-CH4 interconversion in hydrogen-dominated atmospheres. In particular, the observed mole fraction and chemical behavior of CO is used to indirectly constrain the jovian water inventory. Our model can reproduce the observed tropospheric CO abundance provided that the water mole fraction lies in the range (0.25-6.0) × 10−3 in Jupiter’s deep troposphere, corresponding to an enrichment of 0.3-7.3 times the protosolar abundance (assumed to be H2O/H2 = 9.61 × 10−4). Our results suggest that Jupiter’s oxygen enrichment is roughly similar to that for carbon, nitrogen, and other heavy elements, and we conclude that formation scenarios that require very large (>8× solar) enrichments in water can be ruled out. We also evaluate and refine the simple time-constant arguments currently used to predict the quenched CO abundance on Jupiter, other giant planets, and brown dwarfs.  相似文献

We have used Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter data from 2007 and 2009 to compare summer behaviors of the seasonal and residual south polar caps of Mars in those two years. We find that the planet-encircling dust storm that occurred in the first of the two Mars years enhanced the loss of seasonal CO2 deposits relative to the second year but did not have a large effect on the continuing erosion of the pits and mesas within the residual cap materials. This suggests that the increase of bright frost in some regions of the residual cap observed between Mariner 9 and Viking can be accommodated within observed martian weather variability and does not require unknown processes or climate change.  相似文献

The widespread deposition of CO2 ice on the martian polar caps in winter is readily visible from Earth and has been extensively studied from orbit. As the surface cools during polar night, CO2 condenses directly out of the atmosphere at a rate that establishes equilibrium between radiative loss and latent heat of condensation. Since radiative loss is strongly geometry-dependent, the CO2 frost will grow most rapidly on exposed surfaces and more slowly in depressions. Positive feedback will cause a dramatic enhancement of the relief of the underlying topography and a corresponding reduction in the average bulk density. The resulting surface will be highly textured and riddled with perforations.  相似文献

We present in this work an application to Titan, Saturn's satellite of the transposable planetary general circulation model (PGCM), which was developed based on the second version of the Community Atmosphere Model (CAM2) of NCAR. The PGCM is a spectral model with the sigma coordinate (where σ is the pressure normalized to its surface value, commonly used as a vertical coordinate in general circulation models) and is integrated in time using the semi-implicit leapfrog scheme. The horizontal resolutions of the model are based on 128 points in longitude and 64 points in latitude, and the vertical discretization is of 26 σ-levels. In Titan's conditions we apply the PGCM to simulate Titan's general circulation in this study. Some interesting phenomena such as equatorial superrotation, vertical meridional circulations, vertical structure, etc. are well replicated. This demonstrates the good performance and applicability to Titan of our model and provides a foundation for further studies on simulating and understanding Titan's general circulation and its variability by coupling the physical processes. The features of Titan's circulation under the condition of the Earth's rotation rate are also investigated. The results suggest that different rotation rates can significantly affect the dynamical structure of Titan's circulation.  相似文献

A large number of spectra measured by the planetary Fourier spectrometer aboard the European Mars Express mission have been studied to identify the average properties of methane in the Martian atmosphere. Using the line at 3018 cm−1, we have studied the seasonal, diurnal, and spatial variations of methane through the analysis of large averages of spectra (more than 1000 measurements). Methane mixing ratio has been obtained simultaneously with water vapour mixing ratio and water ice content, by best fitting (minimising the χ2) the computed averages with synthetic spectra. These spectra were computed for different values of the three parameters (methane and water vapour mixing ratio, and water ice optical depth). The methane mixing ratio shows a slow decrease from northern spring to southern summer with an average value of 14±5 ppbv (part per billion by volume) and it does not show a particular trend with latitude. The methane mixing ratio seems not to be uniform in longitude in the Martian atmosphere, as already reported by Formisano et al. [2004. Detection of methane in the atmosphere of Mars. Science 306, 1758-1761]. Two maxima are present at −40°E and +70°E longitude. In local time, the methane mixing ratio seems to follow the water vapour diurnal cycle. The most important point for future understanding is, however, that there are special orbits in which methane mixing ratio has a very high value.  相似文献
