An experimental facility has been developed to investigate magma-water interaction (MWI). The facility operates in a high-pressure
and high-temperature environment, with temperatures up to 1,200°C and pressures up to 200 MPa. Cylindrical sample-holders
(20 by 180 mm in size) are heated conductively to yield a three phase (melt, crystals and gas) system, and then water (or
other fluid) is injected into the sample through a capillary tube (diameter 0.5 mm, length ca. 1,000 mm) under controlled
conditions. Pressure, volume and temperature changes are continuously recorded during every phase of the experiments. To test
this facility, MWI is studied at subliquidus temperatures (800 and 900°C) and pressure (8 MPa), using a leucite tephrite sample
with two different initial grain sizes. Because of the grain-size dependence of sintering, the two starting materials produce
magmas with different textures at the same temperature: porous magma for large initial grain sizes and dense magma for small
initial grain sizes. In these experiments 1.5 g of water at room temperature is injected into 6.0 g of partially molten sample
at velocities ranging from 1 to 3 m/s. We find that the extent of fragmentation and transport caused by MWI are mainly controlled
by the texture of the interacting sample with explosive interaction occurring only for porous magmas. 相似文献

The geochemistry of carbonate fault rocks has been examined in two areas of the Arava Fault segment, which forms the major branch of the Dead Sea Transform between the Dead Sea and the Gulf of Aquaba. The role of fluids in faulting deformation in the selected fault segment is remarkably different from observations at other major fault zones. Our data suggest reduced fluid rock interactions in both areas and limited fluid flow. The fault did not act as an important fluid conduit. There are no indications that hydrothermal reactions (cementation, dissolution) did change the strength and behavior of the fault zone, although the two areas show considerable differences with respect to fluid sources and fluid flow. In one area, the investigated calcite mineralization reveals an open fluid system with fluids originating from a variety of sources. Stable isotopes (13C, 18O), strontium isotopes, and trace elements indicate both infiltration of descending (meteoric and/or sea water) and ascending hydrothermal fluids. In the other area, all geochemical data indicate only local (small scale) fluid redistribution. These fluids were derived from the adjacent limestones under nearly closed-system conditions. 相似文献

The study computes time-dependant earthquake probabilities on the basis of seismicity data mainly deriving from historic records.
It provides a methodological approach useful for those countries where the scarcity of instrumental data and/or paleoseismological
evidences requires that historical information shall be stressed. Thus, the conditional probability that damaging earthquakes
(M ≥ 6) may occur in Italy in the next 30 years is shown, and the potential for the main worldwide known Italian cities with
a cultural heritage is outlined. Earthquake probabilities are computed referring to the application of renewal processes,
where the periodicity is analytically modelled by means of the Brownian Passage Time function; an estimate of the dispersion
(i.e., uncertainty) introduced on probabilities is provided making use of Monte Carlo simulations. The computed probabilities
refer to seismic source zones deriving from the spatial clustering of the historically documented seismicity. The computation
of probabilities based on the interaction of earthquakes occurring in nearby zones, has been also attempted for a test area
to explore the influence exerted by the stress transfer effect. The main findings of this study are that (1) seismic source
zones in Southern Italy are the most prone to experience damaging earthquakes in the next 30-years, with conditional probabilities
a large as 10%; and (2) the influence exerted by the earthquake interaction in increasing such probabilities, doesn’t seem
to be relevant, because the mean recurrence times of large earthquakes (above the threshold magnitude of six chosen in this

We performed special experimental and theoretical research concerning the energy--mass exchange process in shallow waters, which took into account the influence of the basin depth on the evaporation and sensible heat exchange. Data was obtained from deep water basins, as well as from shallow waters, at an open sea, as well as in its coastal zone. A new parameterization model of evaporation and friction velocity from shallow water surfaces under different wind velocities was investigated. Results of models and measurements of the energy/mass exchange intensity of a small shallow lake (LITFASS-experiments) were compared. The validation of these models with the eddy-covariance measurements of the LITFASS-98 and LITFASS-2003 experiments showed good results for the wind sector, with good fetch conditions. Therefore, the models examined may be used for calculating the evaporation of lakes where a standard data set of wind velocity, air and water temperature, air moisture and the depth of the lake is available. It should be remembered that in a coastal zone the roughness of the water surface is transformed and therefore there are additional calculation difficulties for the intensity of the energy-mass exchange. Based on our experimental data of the basin depth influence on the water-atmosphere exchange, a new model for the calculation of the energy-mass exchange in a coastal zone was developed. Our new model in combination with the empirical dependence for the calculation of the energy-mass exchange in a coastal zone allows calculation of the momentum, heat and humidity fluxes values at different distances from a shore. 相似文献

Because of the combination of smallconcentrations and/or small fluxes, the determinationof air–sea gas fluxes presents unusual measurementdifficulties. Direct measurements (i.e., eddycorrelation) of the fluxes are rarely attempted. Inthe last decade, there has been an intense scientificeffort to improve measurement techniques and to placebulk parameterizations of gas transfer on firmertheoretical grounds. Oceanic tracer experiments,near-surface mean concentration profiles, eddyaccumulation, and direct eddy covariance methods haveall been used. Theoretical efforts have focusedprimarily in the realm of characterizing the transferproperties of the oceanic molecular sublayer. Recentmajor field efforts organized by the U.S.A. (GASEX-98) andthe European Union (ASGAMAGE) have yielded atmospheric-derivedresults much closer to those from oceanographicmethods. In this paper, we review the physical basisof a bulk-to-bulk gas transfer parameterization thatis generalized for solubility and Schmidt number. Wealso discuss various aspects of recent sensor andtechnique developments used for direct measurementsand demonstrate experimental progress with resultsfrom ASGAMAGE and GASEX-98. It is clear that sensornoise, sensitivity, and cross talk with other speciesand even ship motion corrections still need improvement foraccurate measurements of trace gas exchange over theocean. We show that internal wave/wave interactions in stratified fluids are able to produce strong horizontal mean currents. A simple analytical model allows us to estimate the amplitude of the time-periodic horizontal mean flow induced by the interaction of two monochromatic waves. This model shows that in some cases, the mean flow velocity can overgo a threshold beyond which critical layers and intense energy transfers from the waves to the mean flow are expected. This prediction is confirmed by direct pseudo-spectral simulations of the Navier–Stokes equations under the Boussinesq approximation. Such interactions may help to further understand the presence of strong vertical shear observed in the final stage of stratified flows in oceans and atmospheres. 相似文献
