We study the dynamics of a satellite (artificial or natural) orbiting an Earth-like planet at low altitude from an analytical
point of view. The perturbation considered takes into account the gravity attraction of the planet and in particular it is
caused by its inhomogeneous potential. We begin by truncating the equations of motion at second order, that is, incorporating
the zonal and the tesseral harmonics up to order two. The system is formulated as an autonomous Hamiltonian and has three
degrees of freedom. After three successive Lie transformations, the system is normalised with respect to two angular co-ordinates
up to order five in a suitable small parameter given by the quotient between the angular velocity of the planet and the mean
motion of the satellite. Our treatment is free of power expansions of the eccentricity and of truncated Fourier series in
the anomalies. Once these transformations are performed, the truncated Hamiltonian defines a system of one degree of freedom
which is rewritten as a function of two variables which generate a phase space which takes into account all of the symmetries
of the problem. Next an analysis of the system is achieved obtaining up to six relative equilibria and three types of bifurcations.
The connection with the original system is established concluding the existence of various families of invariant 3-tori of

This paper investigates the possibility of interpreting progressive shear failure in hard soils and soft rocks as the result of shear propagation of a pre‐existing natural defect. This is done through the application of the principles of fracture mechanics, a slip‐weakening model (SWM) being used to simulate the non‐linear zone at the tips of the discontinuity. A numerical implementation of the SWM in a computation method based on the boundary element technique of the displacement discontinuity method (DDM) is presented. The crack and the non‐linear zone at the advancing tip are represented through a set of elements, where the displacement discontinuity (DD) in the tangential direction is determined on the basis of a friction law. A residual friction angle is assumed on the crack elements. Shear resistance decreases on elements in the non‐linear zone from a peak value at the tip, which is characteristic of intact material, to the residual value. The simulation of a uniaxial compressive test in plane strain conditions is carried out to exemplify the numerical methodology. The results emphasize the role played by the critical DD on the mechanical behaviour of the specimen. A validation of the model is shown through the back analysis of some experimental observations. The results of this back analysis show that a non‐linear fracture mechanics approach seems very promising to simulate experimental results, in particular with regards to the shear band evolution pattern. We investigate the potential of the Square Kilometer Array Telescope (SKA) to constrain the sound speed of dark energy. The Integrated Sachs Wolfe (ISW) effect results in a significant power spectrum signal when Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature anisotropies are cross-correlated with galaxies detectable with the SKA in H i . We consider using this measurement, the autocorrelation of H i galaxies and the CMB temperature power spectrum to derive constraints on the sound speed. We study the contributions to the cross-correlation signal made by galaxies at different redshifts and use redshift tomography to improve the signal-to-noise. We use a χ2 analysis to estimate the significance of detecting a sound speed different from that expected in quintessence models, finding that there is potential to distinguish very low sound speeds from the quintessence value. 相似文献

A statistical analysis of the space–time distribution of absorption-line systems (ALSs) observed in QSO spectra within the cosmological redshift interval z = 0.0–3.7 is carried out on the base of our catalogue of absorption systems ( Ryabinkov et al. 2003 ). We confirm our previous conclusion that the z -distribution of absorbing matter contains non-uniform component displaying a pattern of statistically significant alternating maxima (peaks) and minima (dips). Using the wavelet transformation, we determine the positions of the maxima and minima and estimate their statistical significance. The positions of the maxima and minima of the z -distributions obtained for different celestial hemispheres turn out to be weakly sensitive to orientations of the hemispheres. The data reveal a regularity (quasi-periodicity) of the sequence of the peaks and dips with respect to some rescaling functions of z . The same periodicity was found for the one-dimensional correlation function calculated for the sample of the ALSs under investigation. We assume the existence of a regular structure in the distribution of absorption matter, which is not only spatial but also temporal in nature with characteristic time varying within the interval 150–650 Myr for the cosmological model applied. 相似文献

A reliability based approach for analysis of offloading operations with two identical LNG carriers moored in a side-by-side configuration is suggested. The approach, although adopted for two tankers, is generally applicable to different types of LNG terminals. Different heading controls are conceivable for the discharging vessel in the case that the heading is not fixed: heading toward wind-sea, heading toward swell, heading toward wind and free weather vaning. The analyses show that heading toward the governing sea state is the most beneficial option for two identical LNG carriers moored in a side-by-side configuration. Strategies are discussed for estimation of limiting weather criteria that are consistent with prescribed target failure probabilities. 相似文献
