Chandra X-ray observations of rich, dynamically relaxed galaxy clusters allow the properties of the X-ray gas and the total
gravitating mass to be determined precisely. Here, we discuss how Chandra observations may be used as a powerful tool for
cosmological studies. By combining Chandra X-ray results on the X-ray gas mass fractions in clusters with independent measurements
of the Hubble constant and the mean baryonic matter density of the universe, we obtain a tight constraint on the mean total
matter density of the universe, Οm, and an interesting constraint on the cosmological constant, ΟΛ. Using these results, together with the observed local X-ray luminosity function of the most X-ray luminous galaxy clusters,
a mass-luminosity relation determined from Chandra and ROSAT X-ray data and weak gravitational lensing observations, and the
mass function predicted by numerical simulations, we obtain a precise constraint on the normalization of the power spectrum
of density fluctuations in the nearby universe,σ8. We compare our results with those obtained from other, independent methods.

The star WR 7a, also known as SPH 2, has a spectrum that resembles that of V Sagittae stars although no O vi emission has been reported. The Temporal Variance Spectrum – TVS – analysis of our data shows weak but strongly variable emission of O vi lines which is below the noise level in the intensity spectrum.
Contrary to what is seen in V Sagittae stars, optical photometric monitoring shows very little, if any, flickering. We found evidence of periodic variability. The most likely photometric period is Pphot = 0.227(±14) d , while radial velocities suggest a period of P spec = 0.204(±13) d . One-day aliases of these periods can not be ruled out. We call attention to similarities with HD 45166 and DI Cru (= WR 46), where multiple periods are present. They may be associated to the binary motion or to non-radial oscillations.
In contrast to a previous conclusion by Pereira et al., we show that WR 7a contains hydrogen. The spectrum of the primary star seems to be detectable as the N v 4604 Å absorption line is visible. If so, it means that the wind is optically thin in the continuum and that it is likely to be a helium main sequence star.
Given the similarity to HD 45166, we suggests that WR 7a may be a qWR – quasi Wolf–Rayet – star. Its classification is WN4h/CE in the Smith, Shara & Moffat three-dimensional classification system. 相似文献

Black hole mass is one of the fundamental physical parameters of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), for which many methods of estimation have been proposed. One set of methods assumes that the broad-line region (BLR) is gravitationally bound by the central black hole potential, so the black hole mass can be estimated from the orbital radius and the Doppler velocity. Another set of methods assumes the observed variability timescale is determined by the orbital timescale near the innermost stable orbit around the Schwarzschild black hole or the Kerr black hole, or by the characteristic timescale of the accretion disk. We collect a sample of 21 AGNs, for which the minimum variability timescales have been obtained and their black hole masses (Mσ) have been well estimated from the stellar velocity dispersion or the BLR size-luminosity relation. Using the minimum variability timescales we estimated the black hole masses for 21 objects by the three different methods, the results are denoted by Ms, Mk and Md, respectively. We compared each of them with Mσindividually and found that: (1) using the minimum variability timescale with the Kerr black hole theory leads to small differences between Mσand Mk, none exceeding one order of magnitude, and the mean difference between them is about 0.53 dex; (2) using the minimum variability timescale with the Schwarzschild black hole theory leads to somewhat larger difference between Mσand Ms: larger than one order of magnitude for 6 of the 21 sources, and the mean difference is 0.74 dex; (3) using the minimum variability timescale with the accretion disk theory leads to much larger differences between Mσand Md, for 13 of the 21 sources the differences are larger than two orders of magnitude; and the mean difference is as high as about 2.01 dex. 相似文献

We have extend Stormer’s problem considering four magnetic dipoles in motion trying to justify the phenomena of extreme “orderlines”
such as the ones observed in the rings of Saturn; the aim is to account the strength of the Lorentz forces estimating that
the Lorentz field, co-acting with the gravity field of the planet, will limit the motion of all charged particles and small
size grains with surface charges inside a layer of about 200 m thickness as that which is observed in the rings of Saturn.
For this purpose our interest feast in the motion of charged particles with neglected mass where only electromagnetic forces
accounted in comparison to the weakness of the Newtonian fields. This study is particularly difficult because in the regions
we investigate these motions there is enormous three dimensional instability. Following the Poincare’s hypothesis that periodic
solutions are ‘dense’ in the set of all solutions in Hamiltonian systems we try to calculate many families of periodic solutions
and to study their stability. In this work we prove that in this environment charged particles can trace planar symmetric
periodic orbits. We discuss these orbits in details and we give their symplectic relations using the Hamiltonian formulation
which is related to the symplectic matrix. We apply numerical procedures to find families of these orbits and to study their
stability. Moreover we give the bifurcations of these families with families of planar asymmetric periodic orbits and families

The existence of a suspected geological fault has been confirmed using Solid State Nuclear Track Detectors (SSNTDs) by measuring radon concentration variations in the upper soil above its inferred position. We compare and combine likelihood functions of the cosmological parameters Ωm , h and σ 8 , from peculiar velocities, cosmic microwave background (CMB) and type Ia supernovae. These three data sets directly probe the mass in the Universe, without the need to relate the galaxy distribution to the underlying mass via a 'biasing' relation. We include the recent results from the CMB experiments BOOMERANG and MAXIMA-1. Our analysis assumes a flat Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) cosmology with a scale-invariant adiabatic initial power spectrum and baryonic fraction as inferred from big-bang nucleosynthesis. We find that all three data sets agree well, overlapping significantly at the 2 σ level. This therefore justifies a joint analysis, in which we find a joint best-fitting point and 95 per cent confidence limits of (0.17,0.39), (0.64,0.86) and (0.98,1.37). In terms of the natural parameter combinations for these data (0.40,0.73), (0.16,0.27). Also for the best-fitting point, and the age of the Universe is 13.2 Gyr. 相似文献

Surface photometry of 18 Virgo cluster dwarf elliptical (dE) and dwarf lenticular (dS0) galaxies, made by Gavazzi et al. in the H band (1.65 μm) and in the B band (0.44 μm), shows that the ratio of the effective radii of these stellar systems in the B and H bands, r e B / r e H , ranges between 0.7 and 2.2. In particular, dwarf ellipticals and lenticulars with a red total colour index B - H (i.e. with 3.2< B - H <4) have equal effective radii in these two passbands. By contrast, blue (i.e. with 2.5< B - H <3.1) dEs and dS0s have B -band effective radii about 50 per cent larger than the H -band ones, on average. Consistently, strong negative gradients in B - H along the galactocentric radius are found to be associated with blue total colours. This trend is not found in a sample of 29 giant E and S0 galaxies of the Coma cluster with analogous data available in the literature. These early-type giants span a broad range in r e B / r e H (0.2–2.2) , with a mean r e B / r e H ∼1.1 , but a narrow range in (red) colour (3.3< B - H <4.2) . In these stellar systems, colour gradients are usually interpreted as arising either from age/metallicity gradients along the radial coordinate or from dust attenuation, whatever the total colour of the system is. Assuming each of these three distinct interpretations of the origin of colour gradients, we discuss the origin of the association of strong negative colour gradients with blue colours found in the early-type dwarfs under study, in relation with current scenarios of formation and evolution of dE and dS0 galaxies. 相似文献
