Over 10,000 published detrital zircon ages have been reprocessed (applying a +10% normal and reverse concordance range) and analysed to understand the evolution of the detrital zircon record of north-west Africa during the Phanerozoic. Using dissimilarity and clustering analysis, shifts in detrital zircon populations allow interpretation of the evolution of source regions and source to sink systems throughout the Phanerozoic within the West Gondwana superfan. Previous thermochronology and field studies conducted across north-west Africa indicate significant and sustained shifts in source regions in Meso-Cenozoic times which are not recorded in the detrital zircon geochronology record. This discrepancy is most notable for Mesozoic to modern source to sink studies focused on the evolution of the Atlasic rift and opening of the Atlantic and Tethyan Oceans to the west and north respectively. Our results indicate a high degree of similarity between samples from Cambrian times onwards due to successive phases of sediment recycling. This highlights the need to integrate detrital zircon analysis with other techniques to provide confident reconstruction of sediment routing systems across Morocco. This systematic review also reveals the ubiquitous occurrence of Mesoproterozoic zircons within Moroccan sediment. No basement of this age is known from north-west Africa—often described as the ‘Mesoproterozoic Gap’, which was thought to be a diagnostic feature of sediment derived from the West African Craton. However, zircons of this age form 7% of all analysed zircons and are present in sediments from at least 700 Ma. The presence of this population is interpreted as strongly diagnostic of provenance from either the Amazonian Craton or the Eastern Gondwana Orogen within Central Africa. Their presence in the Moroccan detrital record from the Neoproterozoic onwards raises questions about the position of the West African Craton in the Proterozoic, and for the spatial extent of Mesoproterozoic orogeny within north Africa.  相似文献

This paper utilizes a modified Water Accounting Model (WAM) to track the moisture sources of an extreme precipitation event in Shandong during 18-20 July 2007. It is found that different methods in dealing with the residual of the water budget always produce different results in moisture recycling calculations. In addition, results from the backward tracking without the residual are in complete agreement with those from the forward tracking with the residual, and vice versa, implying a mathematical consistency. We thus analyze and derive the conditions under which the two tracking approaches equate with each other. We applied the backward tracking to the Shandong extreme rainfall case and obtained quantitative estimates of moisture contributions of three selected regions away from the rainfall area. The results indicate that the spatial pattern rather than numerical value of the recycling moisture is more reliable in tracking the moisture sources. The moisture of this Shandong rainfall event comes mostly from the nearby upwind area in Southwest China, which is of the terrestrial origin; while the moisture originating from the neighboring West Pacific contributes little to this event.  相似文献

始新世末期以来,全球大气CO2浓度持续下降,但长期以来不清楚为何这一时期全球大气CO2浓度下降,巨量的大气CO2赋存于何处。深入研究该问题有助于准确理解未来大气CO2浓度变化的趋势,特别是有助于进一步评估人类自身碳排放的后果。这一时期,小印度陆块持续与大亚洲陆块汇聚,导致了以喜马拉雅为代表的山脉群和青藏高原的形成。很早就有学者从地球表层碳循环的角度提出了"青藏高原的隆升导致了全球变冷"的观点,但这一观点既没有解释清楚"巨量大气CO2到何处去"的问题,也没有讨论青藏高原本身向大气圈排放CO2等问题,因此该观点最近受到了强烈的质疑。这些激烈的争论充分反映了传统的地球表层碳循环研究已不能充分满足当前社会的需求。本文从深部碳循环这个视角重新探讨青藏高原在全球碳循环中的作用。在印度与亚洲陆块持续汇聚期间,以喜马拉雅为代表的巨型山脉快速崛起,然后持续遭受化学风化作用,大量消耗大气CO2。化学风化的产物堆积在喜马拉雅山前的前陆盆地内,形成了巨量含新生碳酸盐矿物和有机碳的西瓦里克沉积杂岩,随后新生的西瓦里克杂岩又随持续平板俯冲的印度陆壳被带入青藏高原内部,与平板俯冲的印度陆壳共同经历高温变质作用。俯冲板片内的(黑)云母等含水矿物发生脱水,形成花岗岩浆。花岗岩浆再与俯冲的西瓦里克杂岩内的碳酸盐岩发生交代反应,释放出含钙、镁离子、以CO2和水为主的高温流体,本文称其为壳源火成碳酸岩浆。碳酸岩浆沿张性裂隙上侵、冷凝之后形成藏南的碳酸岩脉。虽然青藏高原内部的火山、温泉等均向大气圈排放CO2,但所排放的碳均为再循环来自大气圈的碳,并且排放量略小于吸收量,否则消耗大气CO2所新生的碳酸岩脉就不会在青藏高原内部保存下来。藏南大量晚新生代碳酸岩脉的发现充分说明了喜马拉雅山脉和藏南高原是一个巨大的碳储库,在其形成过程中将巨量大气CO2转化为流体(岩浆)的形式封存于青藏高原内部,从而大幅降低了大气CO2浓度,最终导致了全球变冷。上述过程充分说明,大气CO2浓度的变化实质上是受控于地球内部的构造运动。进一步可推论出,"全球变化"只是一个自然现象,虽然它有独特的运行轨迹,但与人类的碳排放量无因果关系。  相似文献

The recycling of scrap material has been identified as an important strategy in the larger theory of industrial ecology. Industrial ecology argues that the traditional model of industrial activity needs to be transformed into a 'closed loop' industrial ecosystem where used materials (scrap) and by-products would substitute for virgin materials during production processes. The recycling of scrap material forms part of this larger effort to reduce the overall environmental impact of production and consumption. A key, but as yet, unresolved question in this process is the geographic scale (local, regional, national, global) at which loop closing should take place. This preliminary empirical research examines the export and import geography of the seven largest (by weight) US scrap commodities (iron and steel, paper, plastics, aluminium, copper, nickel and zinc) between 1995 and 2005 to ascertain the extent to which US scrap flows overseas and how that might affect our understanding of how material loops can close. Other than an integrated export and import relationship with Canada, the results suggest that there are two distinct circuits of scrap flows in the USA. The USA exports a substantial portion of the recyclable scrap generated each year to rapidly developing countries, while importing smaller quantities of scrap from the EU. With the major exception of exporting higher value iron and steel scrap to China, the US tends to export lower value scrap and import higher value scrap. In part this reflects imbalances in the supply and demand for scrap between the USA and the developing world, the lack of potentially available scrap and the absence of a robust recycling infrastructure in the developing world. Although such scrap circuits are probably not ideal, the use of US scrap in the developing world is both a realistic and preferable alternative in the short to medium term than virgin production.  相似文献

The subduction factories in convergent plate margins exert crucial control on recycling terrestrial components and returning to the overlying crust. The Nd and Hf isotopic systems provide potential tracers to evaluate these processes. Here we present a case where these isotopic systems are decoupled in a suite of granites from the Chinese Altai, showing a wide range of εHf(t) values(from -4.7 to +10.8) in contrast to a limited range of εNd(t) values(from -5.8 to -1.9). The zircon xenocrysts occurring frequently in these rocks show markedly negative εHf(t) values(from -34.3 to -6.5) and positive d7 Li values(from +12.5 to +18.2). We propose a model to explain the observed relationship between residual zircon and Nde Hf isotope decoupling. We suggest that the Altai granites originated from partial melting of subducted slab components under relatively low temperature conditions which aided the residual zircon from oceanic sediments to inherit and retain a significant amount of177 Hf in the source, thereby elevating the176 Hf/177 Hf ratio of the melt, and decoupling from the143 Nd/144 Nd ratio during the subsequent magmatic processes. Our study illustrates a case where sediment recycling in subduction zone contributes to decoupling of Nd and Hf isotopic systems, with former providing a more reliable estimate of the source characteristics of granitic magmas.  相似文献

Geochronology of detrital zircons and their overgrowths combined with whole-rock geochemical and Sm–Nd isotopic data can be used to distinguish different stages of sediment recycling and metamorphism during multiphase orogenic evolution. This approach is applied to the Paleoproterozoic sedimentary rocks of the Tampere and Pirkanmaa belts (southern Finland) in the center of the composite Svecofennian orogen.The lower part of the Tampere belt succession and bulk of the Pirkanmaa belt are characterized by turbidites whereas the upper part of the Tampere belt succession is dominated by 1.90–1.89 Ga mature arc-type volcanic rocks. Detrital zircon geochronology indicates that the Tampere and Pirkanmaa belts have a coeval 1.92–1.89 Ga depositional and tectonic history. Ages of pre-depositional zircon overgrowths vary from 1.91 Ga to 2.0 Ga with clusters at 1.92 Ga and 1.98 Ga. Within the Pirkanmaa belt, post-depositional zircon overgrowths indicate metamorphic culmination at c. 1885 Ma in the Vammala Ni-zone and at c. 1875 Ma in the northern part.The lower conglomerates and graywackes in the Tampere belt and their equivalents in the Pirkanmaa belt are rich both in Neoarchean and Paleoproterozoic grains, the latter ranging in age from 1.9 to 2.1 Ga. Compared to these, a sample from the Vammala Ni-zone has an exotic provenance with at least c. 1.90 Ga, 2.04–2.15 Ga, 2.38–2.48 Ga and 2.57–2.63 Ga components.A sedimentary recycling and tectonic model for the central Fennoscandia is proposed, in which the Paleoproterozoic Keitele + Bergslagen continent was formed during an unnamed orogeny at 1.98–1.97 Ga. The Archean Norrbotten microcontinent was attached to the continent at 1.97–1.93 Ga. Upper Kaleva turbidites, derived from the Lapland-Kola orogen in the north, were deposited before 1.92 Ga on a passive margin of the Archean Karelia craton. The Karelia craton collided with the Keitele + Bergslagen + Norrbotten continent at c. 1.92 Ga forming the Lapland-Savo orogen. Subsequent evolution led to rifting and break-up of the latter continent into two microcontinents in the hinterland. At 1.92–1.91 Ga the rift was developed into a subsiding passive margin of the Keitele microcontinent with voluminous turbidite deposition, now seen as graywackes in the Tampere, Pirkanmaa and Pohjanmaa (western Finland) belts. The turbidite material was derived from the rising Lapland-Savo orogen and included recycled Upper Kaleva, recycled (sandstones) and first-cycle 2.03–1.97 Ga detritus from Keitele, 1.93–1.92 Ga Savo arc material, as well as detritus from the Archean craton and its cover deposits. The collision between Karelia and Keitele caused a subduction reversal and the onset of Tampere arc volcanism at 1.90 Ga. Arc-derived materials started to deposit and were mixed with older sedimentary rocks, and trench-parallel distal turbidites from exotic source were being deposited in the accretionary wedge.  相似文献

To what extent methane liberated from marine hydrate will enter the ocean during a warmer world is unknown. Although methane release due to hydrate dissociation has been modelled, it is unclear whether or not methane will reach the seafloor during a warmer world and therefore contribute to oceanic and atmospheric budgets. Here we show, using a new three-dimensional (3-D) seismic dataset, that some hydrate deposits surround the gas chimneys passing through the HSZ. Bottom water warming since the last glacial maximum (LGM) is interpreted to cause hydrate dissociation but critically some of the released methane was not vented to the ocean. The released gas caused seal failure and free gas entered the hydrate stability zone (HSZ) through vertical gas chimneys to where new hydrate accumulations formed. This process is a new evidence for methane recycling and could account in part for the lack of methane in ice core records that cover warming events during the late Quaternary. This research provides new insight into how methane could be recycled rather than vented during a warmer world.  相似文献

The Archean continental crusts account for ca.20% of the present volume,but the thermal history of the Earths' mantle suggests much more continental crusts were formed in the early Archean.Because the Archean continental crust underwent severe metamorphism,it is important to avoid influence by the later thermal events.We carried out a comprehensive geochronological work of Cathodoluminescence(CL) observation and U-Pb dating of zircons from orthogneisses and supracrustal rocks over the Saglek Block to obtain their protolith ages.The zircons were classified into three domains of core,mantle and rims,and the cores were further classified into three groups of inherited,altered and zoned cores based on the zonation on the CL images.We estimated the protolith ages from Pb-Pb ages of the zoned-cores of zircons with low U contents.We made a detailed sketch of a small outcrop in St.John's Harbour South(SJHS) area,and classified the orthogneisses and mafic enclaves into seven generations based on the geologic occurrence.The first and second generations comprise mafic rocks and lack magmatic zircons.We conducted CL imaging and U-Pb dating of zircons from the third,sixth and seventh generation of the orthogneisses to estimate the protolith ages at 3902 L 25,3892 ± 33 and 3897 ± 33 Ma for each,supporting the presence of the over 3.9 Ca Iqaluk Gneiss.The geological occurrence that the mafic rocks occur as enclaves within the 3.9 Ga Iqaluk Gneiss indicates that they are the oldest supracrustal rocks in the world.Our geochronological and geological studies show the Uivak Gneiss is quite varied in lithology and age from 3.6 to 3.9 Ga,and tentatively classified into six groups based on their ages.The oldest Uivak Gneiss components including the Iqaluk Gneiss are present around the SJHS area,and the orthogneisses become young as it is away.The lines of evidence of overprinting of younger granitoid on older granitoid in small outcrops and geological-map scale as well as presence of inherited zircons even in the oldest suite suggests that crustal reworking played an important role on erasing the ancient crusts.  相似文献
