The dynamical equations describing the evolution of a self-gravitating fluid can be rewritten in the form of a Schrödinger equation coupled to a Poisson equation determining the gravitational potential. This approach has a number of interesting features, many of which were pointed out in a seminal paper by Widrow & Kaiser. In particular we show that this approach yields an elegant reformulation of an idea of Jones concerning the origin of lognormal intermittency in the galaxy distribution.  相似文献

The workshop took place at the beginning of what promises tobe a golden age of asteroseismology.Ground-based instrumentation is finally reaching a level of stabilitywhich allows detailed investigations of solar-like oscillations in atleast bright, slowly rotating main-sequence stars.Very extensive results are expected from the coming space missions,including data on a broad range of stars from the Eddington mission.The observational situation is therefore extremely promising.To make full use of these promises, major efforts are requiredtowards the efficient utilization of the data, through the developmentof techniques for the analysis and interpretation of the data.A broad range of topics related to these issues is discussed in the presentproceedings. Here I review some of the relevant problems,relate the asteroseismic investigations to broader areas of astrophysics and consider briefly the basis for our great expectations for the developmentof the field.  相似文献

Described here is a preliminary and tentative application of a method for fine-classification of stars, selected for studies of galactic structure. The present investigation is based on about 100 stars within the approximate spectral type range B6-A5, for which both spectra andUBV photometry have been obtained. The motivation of the project is the following: For the study of galactic fine-structure it is essential to use as many members as possible of stellar agglomerations of various type for a statistical treatment of the material. A-type stars are fairly numerous and reasonably bright, but if all chemically peculiar stars, fast rotators or multiple systems have to be omitted there is generally too little left for a relevant investigation. Here we perform some experiments in order to find a method for fine-classification of A stars, both normal and chemically peculiar, within the framework of the M K system. In this connection it is desirable to reduce the present multitude of CP classifications to a manageable number. It is shown here that, independenttly of the definition of the degree of peculiarity, there is no sharp borderline separating the CP stars from the ‘normal’ ones. Also it is found that spectral classification can on an average be performed with almost the same accuracy for CP stars as for the ‘normal’ ones provided cases of extreme peculiarity are avoided. Spline surfaces are interpolated for top of the Dundee Limestone of the central Michigan Basin, USA. The requirement of gridded data render spline functions inappropriate tools for representing many types of geological mapped data. Observations of redshift-space distortions in spectroscopic galaxy surveys offer an attractive method for observing the build-up of cosmological structure. In this paper, we develop and test a new statistic based on anisotropies in the measured galaxy power spectrum, which is independent of galaxy bias and matches the matter power spectrum shape on large scales. The amplitude provides a constraint on the derivative of the linear growth rate through   f σ8(mass)  . This demonstrates that spectroscopic galaxy surveys offer many of the same advantages as weak lensing surveys, in that they both use galaxies as test particles to probe all matter in the Universe. They are complementary as redshift-space distortions probe non-relativistic velocities and therefore the temporal metric perturbations, while weak lensing tests the sum of the temporal and spatial metric perturbations. The degree to which our estimator can be pushed into the non-linear regime is considered and we show that a simple Gaussian damping model, similar to that previously used to model the behaviour of the power spectrum on very small scales, can also model the quasi-linear behaviour of our estimator. This enhances the information that can be extracted from surveys for Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) models.  相似文献

We apply the joint lensing and dynamics code for the analysis of early-type galaxies, 'Combined Algorithm for Unified Lensing and Dynamics ReconstructiON ( cauldron )', to a rotating N -body stellar system with dark matter halo which significantly violates the two major assumptions of the method, i.e. axial symmetry supported by a two-integral distribution function. The goal is to study how cauldron performs in an extreme case, and to determine which galaxy properties can still be robustly recovered. Three data sets, corresponding to orthogonal lines of sight, are generated from the N -body system and analysed with the identical procedure followed in the study of real lens galaxies, adopting an axisymmetric power-law total density distribution. We find that several global properties of the N -body system are recovered with remarkable accuracy, despite the fact that the adopted power-law model is too simple to account for the lack of symmetry of the true density distribution. In particular, the logarithmic slope of the total density distribution is robustly recovered to within less than 10 per cent (with the exception of the ill-constrained very inner regions), the inferred angle-averaged radial profile of the total mass closely follows the true distribution, and the dark matter fraction of the system (inside the effective radius) is correctly determined within ∼10 per cent of the total mass. Unless the line-of-sight direction is almost parallel to the total angular momentum vector of the system, reliably recovered quantities also include the angular momentum, the   V /σ  ratio and the anisotropy parameter δ. We conclude that the cauldron code can be safely and effectively applied to real early-type lens galaxies, also providing reliable information for the systems that depart significantly from the method's assumptions.  相似文献
