Random vectors and spatial analysis by geostatistics for geotechnical applications

Geostatistics is extended to the spatial analysis of vector variables by defining the estimation variance and vector variogram in terms of the magnitude of difference vectors. Many random variables in geotechnology are in vectorial terms rather than scalars, and its structural analysis requires those sample variable interpolations to construct and characterize structural models. A better local estimator will result in greater quality of input models; geostatistics can provide such estimators: kriging estimators. The efficiency of geostatistics for vector variables is demonstrated in a case study of rock joint orientations in geological formations. The positive cross-validation encourages application of geostatistics to spatial analysis of random vectors in geoscience as well as various geotechnical fields including optimum site characterization, rock mechanics for mining and civil structures, cavability analysis of block cavings, petroleum engineering, and hydrologic and hydraulic modelings.

滑坡属于不良地质现象,是斜坡上的部分岩体和土体在自然或人为因素的影响下沿某一明显的界面发生剪切破坏向坡下运动的现象。当高速公路不得不通过某一滑坡时,对其稳定性进行分析和整治设计就显得尤为重要。以祁临高速公路灵石至霍州段窑深沟大桥东南窑深沟滑坡为实例,根据勘察资料,利用岩土力学知识,在公路修好后并运行的情况下,计算出了其稳定系数和推滑力,又以材料力学、结构力学等力学理论为基础,设计出抗滑桩和锚索抗滑桩等两种整治方案,经验证,效果良好。     

Plate tectonics at an awkward junction: rules for the evolution of Sovanco Ridge area, NE Pacific

Summary. The elegant geometrical rules of plate tectonics do not allow for a gradual shift in plate motion directions, or the gradual, as opposed to sudden, cessation of subduction. At the scale of the small plates in the NE Pacific, imperfections in boundary processes have a large effect on the net torque on the plates, and heavily influence the evolution of the geometry. In this area, the rotation of the spreading directions and the diminution of true subduction along the southern Canadian coast has not occurred by the sudden switching of plate motions from one stable condition to another. Instead, it appears as if the dominant factor for the evolution is the resistance of the ocean floor to formation of new, smoothly slipping transform faults. Compressive deformation of even young lithosphere is not only mechanically unlikely, but is not helpful to the particular configurations found in this area. Instead, a migrating shear zone and an episode of highly en echelon spreading along a new axis nearly perpendicular to the present Juan de Fuca ridge have resulted: the present Sovanco ridge was never a transform fault. Neither is the Nootka fault a shear zone, but the locus of stretching between plates whose motions are congruent at the Juan de Fuca ridge, but diverge toward the continental margin.     

Surface sediment analysis of a rock glacier

Three trend surface techniques are used to evaluate the nature and distribution of the surface sediments of a rock glacier. Trend surface analysis, vector trend analysis, and most predictable surface (MPS)mapping suggest that long-term rock glacier creep causes the highly variable debris cover to display crude sorting and orientation patterns. Poorly sorted and randomly oriented surface materials may be the result of insufficient time for slowly evolving rock glacier sediment distributions to be established and/or the site of glacial erosion or deposition.

Non-Continuation of Integrals of the Rotating Two-body Problem in Hill's Lunar Problem

We consider Hill's lunar problem as a perturbation of the integrable two-body problem. For this we avoid the usual normalization in which the angular velocity of the rotating frame of reference is put equal to unity and consider as the perturbation parameter. We first express the Hamiltonian H of Hill's lunar problem in the Delaunay variables. More precisely we deduce the expressions of H along the orbits of the two-body problem. Afterwards with the help of the conserved quantities of the planar two-body problem (energy, angular momentum and Laplace–Runge–Lenz vector) we prove that Hill's lunar problem does not possess a second integral of motion, independent of H, in the sense that there exist no analytic continuation of integrals, which are linear functions of in the rotating two-body problem. In connection with the proof of this main result we give a further restrictive statement to the nonintegrability of Hill's lunar problem.
