Displacement measurement‐based estimations of loads and utilization degrees in shotcrete tunnel shells as part of the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), have become standard tools in tunnel practice; their quality, however, may crucially depend on the knowledge of the actual shotcrete composition after spraying. To shed light on this issue, we here determine, based on experimentally validated micromechanical representations of shotcrete, the hydration degree‐dependent elastic, creep, and strength properties of different shotcretes, characterized by water cement ratios (w/c) between 0.4 and 0.6, aggregate cement ratios (a/c) between 3.5 and 5, and Young's modulus of aggregates (Eagg) between 40 and 80 GPa. These properties are fed into a structural shell model of the Sieberg tunnel, and this model is subjected to displacement fields approximated from daily displacement measurements at five selected points along the shell's inner surface. Resulting stresses and forces in the tunnel shell allow for analyzing the influence of shotcrete composition on load‐level estimation in NATM tunnel shells: The magnitudes of circumferential and longitudinal normal forces increase significantly with decreasing w/c, while a/c and Eagg have the inverse and relatively minor effect. The utilization degree is virtually insensitive to changes in w/c(especially at early ages), and only slightly decreases with decreasing a/c and Eagg. The location of maximum loading is unaffected by the shotcrete composition underlying the analysis. Conclusively, location and magnitude of maximum utilization degrees are very robust estimates (not affected by limited knowledge on the shotcrete composition), whereas realistic estimation of stresses and forces does require more accurate consideration of shotcrete composition. The physical parameters that affect the formation of Pele's hair and Pele's tears during lava fountaining are discussed. Experiments on ink jets produced from a nozzle under different Weber number (We) and Reynolds number (Re) show the following results: if (Re) is relatively large compared with (We), an ink droplet is produced. However, if (Re) is relatively small and (We) is large, the spurting ink becomes thread-like. I define the Pele number (Pe) as (We)/(Re), which is expressed as v/0, where v is the spuring velocity from an erupting vent, and are viscosity and interfacial tension of the erupting magma, and and 0 are density of air and magma. The experimental results from ink jets suggest that Pele's hair will be produced for larger (Pe), while Pele's tears are very likely produced for relatively small (Pe). I conclude that Pele's hair could be produced when the spurting velocity of erupting magmas is high, and Pele's tears when it is relatively low. As an additional point of interest, the similarity of SEM photographs of the characteristic shape of Pele's hair to those of the failed products of commercial glass fibre are shown. 相似文献

It is well known that axial force – bending moment interaction (N–M interaction) affects to a large extent the cyclic inelastic behaviour of structural elements, especially columns in framed structures, with reduction in bending capacity and loss of available ductility. A few studies have also shown that significant inelastic axial shortening affects the response of column elements subjected to medium–high levels of axial loads and cyclic bending. This paper is primarily aimed at evaluating the effects of column N–M interaction on the inelastic seismic response of steel frames. By considering the contemporaneous action of vertical loads, due to gravity, and of horizontal seismic excitation, it is shown that the progressive axial shortening of adjacent columns may differ substantially, thus inducing significant relative settlements at the ends of the connecting beams and, then, remarkable amplifications in beam plastic rotations. An evaluation of additional beam plastic rotations induced by column N–M interaction is carried out for real structures by investigating the inelastic response of steel frames designed according to European standards under horizontal and vertical earthquake excitations. Properly fabricated triangular‐plate added damping and stiffness (TADAS) devices can sustain a large number of yield reversals without strength degradation, thereby dissipating a significant amount of earthquake‐induced energy. A pronounced isotropic‐hardening effect is recognized in the force‐deformation relationships of the TADAS devices made from two grades of low yield strength steel. The proposed plasticity‐fibre model employing two surfaces (a yield surface and a bounding surface) in plasticity theory accurately predicts the experimental responses of the TADAS devices. This model is also implemented into a computer program DRAIN2D+ to investigate a frame response with the TADAS devices. Substructure pseudo‐dynamic tests and analytical studies of a two‐storey steel frame constructed with the low yield strength steel, LYP‐100 or LYP‐235 grade, TADAS devices confirm that the dynamic structural response can only be predicted if the proposed plasticity‐fibre model is used for LYP‐100 steel TADAS device.
