One factor that influences foraging is predation risk. As a result, herbivores may not use landscapes uniformly due to spatial differences in perceived predation risk. Wild herbivores forage across these ‘landscapes of fear’; however, the extent to which domestic herbivores consider them is generally unknown. Using a grid of artificial food patches and measuring giving up densities (GUDs), we mapped landscapes of fear of free-ranging domestic goats on three substrates. In the first experiment, we related GUDs to landscape variables. Goats preferred feeding in open ground with firm substrate compared to a sandy riverbed or a rocky hillside. We suggest that differences relate to escape potential and the occurrence of ambush sites. Landscape variables that influenced feeding effort were patch visibility and plants next to a patch. In a second experiment, we increased predation risk by adding predator dung and urine into the habitats. In response, feeding effort declined across all three habitats. Furthermore, goats only responded to patch visibility and not plants next to the patches. Better sightlines increase predator detection and allow individuals to see group members. Our results indicate that predation risk influences the extent to which free-ranging domestic herbivores utilise landscapes. 相似文献

利用OMNO2全球产品卫星遥感资料研究科技城市北京、交通城市黄骅港、旅游城市三亚、特区城市深圳和工业城市抚顺的NO2月平均变化情况。通过Beat软件和IDL联合编程对该产品进行处理,得到各城市对流层NO2垂直柱密度的月平均值;对各城市2004年10月至2007年10月的NO2月平均变化进行线性正弦模型模拟,得到月平均变化趋势和月增长率,并评价变化趋势的精度。结果显示,各城市在冬季NO2对流层垂直柱密度较大,夏季较小,季节性循环明显。北京、黄骅港、三亚、抚顺在这段时间NO2总体呈增加趋势,从大到小依次是:抚顺、北京、黄骅港和三亚,深圳呈减少趋势。根据趋势显著性判别准则,各城市的NO2月平均变化均显著。另外相对于2004年10月,月相对增长率从大到小依次是抚顺、三亚、黄骅港、北京、深圳,其中深圳的NO2呈现负增长。 相似文献

The use of heavy machinery during opencast coal mining can result in soil compaction. Severe soil compaction has a negative impact on the transport of water and gas in the soil. In addition, rainfall intensity has traditionally been related to soil surface sealing affecting water transport. To assess the effects of rainfall intensity and compaction on water infiltration and surface runoff in an opencast coal mining area, the disturbed soils from the Antaibao opencast mine in Shanxi Province, China, were collected. Four soil columns with different bulk densities (i.e., 1.4 g cm-3, 1.5 g cm-3, 1.6 g cm-3, and 1.7 g cm-3) were designed, and each column received water five times at rainfall intensities of 23.12, 28.91, 38.54, 57.81, and 115.62 mm hr-1. The total volume of runoff, the time to start runoff, and the volumetric water contents at the depths of 5 cm, 15 cm, 25 cm, 35 cm, 45 cm, 55 cm, and 65 cm were measured. Under the same soil bulk density, high rainfall intensity reduced infiltration, increased surface runoff, and decreased the magnitude of change in the volumetric water contents at different depths. Under the same rainfall intensity, the soil column with a high bulk density showed relatively low water infiltration. Treatments 3 (1.6 g cm-3) and 4 (1.7 g cm-3) had very small changes in volumetric water contents of the profiles even under a lower rainfall intensity. Severe soil compaction was highly prone to surface runoff after rainfall. Engineering and revegetation measures are available to improve compacted soil quality in dumps. Manually collected snow data are often considered as ground truth for many applications such as climatological or hydrological studies. However, there are many sources of uncertainty that are not quantified in detail. For the determination of water equivalent of snow cover (SWE), different snow core samplers and scales are used, but they are all based on the same measurement principle. We conducted two field campaigns with 9 samplers commonly used in observational measurements and research in Europe and northern America to better quantify uncertainties when measuring depth, density and SWE with core samplers. During the first campaign, as a first approach to distinguish snow variability measured at the plot and at the point scale, repeated measurements were taken along two 20 m long snow pits. The results revealed a much higher variability of SWE at the plot scale (resulting from both natural variability and instrumental bias) compared to repeated measurements at the same spot (resulting mostly from error induced by observers or very small scale variability of snow depth). The exceptionally homogeneous snowpack found in the second campaign permitted to almost neglect the natural variability of the snowpack properties and focus on the separation between instrumental bias and error induced by observers. Reported uncertainties refer to a shallow, homogeneous tundra-taiga snowpack less than 1 m deep (loose, mostly recrystallised snow and no wind impact). Under such measurement conditions, the uncertainty in bulk snow density estimation is about 5% for an individual instrument and is close to 10% among different instruments. Results confirmed that instrumental bias exceeded both the natural variability and the error induced by observers, even in the case when observers were not familiar with a given snow core sampler. 相似文献

The Fourier Integral Method (FIM) of spectral simulation, adapted to generate realizations of a random function in one, two, or three dimensions, is shown to be an efficient technique of non-conditional geostatistical simulation. The main contribution is the use of the fast Fourier transform for both numerical calculus of the density spectral function and as generator of random finite multidimensional sequences with imposed covariance. Results obtained with the FIM are compared with those obtained by other classic methods: Shinozuka and Jan Method in 1D and Turning Bands Method in 2D and 3D, the points for and against different methodologies are discussed. Moreover, with the FIM the simulation of nested structures, one of which can be a nugget effect and the simulation of both zonal and geometric anisotropy is straightforward. 基于温州市山地丘陵区开展的多目标地球化学调查获得的深、表层土壤有机碳和全碳数据,采用直线模型法计算了研究区表层(0~0.2 m)、中层(0~1.0 m)和深层(0~2 m)土壤无机碳的单位储量及密度;采用指数模型法计算了研究区表层(0~0.2 m)、中层(0~1.0 m)和深层(0~2 m)土壤有机碳的单位储量及密度。利用这些数据分别编制了表层、中层、深层无机碳和有机碳的碳密度图,分析了无机碳、有机碳的分布范围和特点以及它们在不同土壤类型中的分布特征。结果表明研究区单位土壤无机碳平均储量为2881.333t,平均密度为0.720 kg/m^2,单位土壤有机碳平均储量为43128.667t,平均密度为10.782 kg/m^2;有机碳和无机碳在表层、中层和深层土壤中含量分布趋势一致;在不同土壤类型中含量分布趋势也一致,均为滨海岩土中最高,粗骨土中最低。 相似文献
