The Rajahmundry Trap Basalts(RTB) are erupted through fault-controlled fissures in the Krishna-Godavari Basin(K-G Basin) of Godavari Triple Junction,occurring as a unique outcrop sandwiched between Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments along the east coast of India.Detailed geochemical studies have revealed that RTB are mid-Ti(1.74-1.92) to high-Ti(2.04-2.81) basalts with a distinct quartz tholeiitic parentage.MgO(6.2-13.12 wt.%),Mg#(29-50) and Zr(109-202 ppm) suggest that these basalts evolved by fractional crystallization during the ascent of the parent magma along deep-seated fractures.Moderate to high fractionation of HREE,as indicated by(Gd/Yb)N ratios(1.71-2.31) of RTB,suggest their generation through 3-5%melting of a Fe-rich mantle corresponding to the stability fields of spinel and garnet peridotite at depths of 60-100 km.Low K2O/P2O5(0.26-1.26),high TiO2/P2O5(6.74-16.79),La/Nb(0.89-1.45),Nb/Th > 8(8.35-13),negative anomalies at Rb reflect minimum contamination by granitic continental crust.(Nb/La)PM ratios(0.66-1.1) of RTB are attributed to endogenic contamination resulted through recycling of subducted oceanic slab into the mantle.Pronounced Ba enrichment with relative depletion in Rb indicates assimilation of Infra- and Inter-trappean sediments of estuarine to shallow marine character.Geochemical compositions such as Al2O3/TiO2(3.88-6.83),medium to high TiO2(1.74-2.81 wt.%).positive Nb anomalies and LREE enrichment of these RTB attest to their mantle plume origin and indicate the generation of parent magma from a plume-related enriched mantle source with EM 1signature.Ba/Th(46-247),Ba/La(3.96-28.51) and Th/Nb(0.08-0.13) ratios suggest that the source enrichment process was marked by recycling of subduction-processed oceanic crust and lithospheric components into the mantle.Zr/Hf(37-41) and Zr/Ba(0.51-3.24) indicate involvement of an asthenospheric mantle source.The Rajahmundry basalts show affinity towards FOZO(focal zone mantle) and PSCL(post-Archaean subcontinental lithosphere) which reflect mixing between asthenospheric and lithospheric mantle components in their source.Origin of RTB magma is attributed to plume-lithosphere interaction and the upward movement of melt is facilitated by intrabasinal deep-seated faults in the K-G Basin. 相似文献

Since the early 1980s, fifteen outbursts have occurred in the Huaibei Coalfield of China. These outbursts were reported to be associated with sills. To study the effect of sill intrusions on coal seam and their relationship to methane outbursts, eleven samples from the No. 10 coal seam were taken from the Wolonghu Mine at various distances from a diorite sill. Comparisons were made between unaltered and heat-affected coals using petrographic and chemical data, micropore characteristics, adsorption properties of coal, and gas outburst indexes from field. Approaching the intrusion, vitrinite reflectance levels increased from 2.74% to 5.03%, and the thermal aureole of the sill ~ 60 m (from the sill boundary to sample 9). Three zones along this gradient were identified as corresponding to (1) thermal evolution zone No. 1 (0-5 m from sill), (2) thermal evolution zone No. 2 (5-60 m from sill), and (3) unaltered zone. The methane adsorption capacity of coal samples in the thermal evolution zone No. 2 was generally higher than in the two other zones, and the unaltered zone higher than the thermal evolution zone No. 1. It is concluded that the contact-metamorphism decreased the adsorption capacity of coal and the thermal evolution of sill increased it. The trap effect of sill, combined with the mudstone and siltstone roof and floor of the No. 10 coal seam, provided a seal for the formation of a gas pocket. Abnormally high formation pressures at the No. 10 coal seam led to two outbursts. 相似文献

The trap efficiency of a catcher in wind erosion measurements plays a significant role, and in many cases suspension trap
efficiencies at high wind velocities are still unknown. The sediment trap efficiency generally changes with particles size
and with wind speed. In this study, the efficiency of Vaseline Slide (VS) and Modified Wilson and Cooke (MWAC) catchers were
determined with different sand particle sizes (<50, <75, 50–75, 200–400, and 400–500 μm) at a fixed wind speed (13.3 ms−1) and with different soil textures at different wind velocities (10.3, 12.3, and 14.3 ms−1) in the wind tunnel of the International Center for Eremology (ICE), Ghent University, Belgium. The traps were placed at
different heights (4, 6.5, 13, 20, 120, and 192 cm for VS and 1.5, 3, 5, 8, 11, and 30 cm for MWAC) to catch saltating and
suspended sediments in a 12-m long, 1.2-m wide and 3.2-m high working section of the wind tunnel. In the sand particle experiments,
the efficiency of the VS catcher was 92% for particles smaller than 50 μm and decreased with increasing particles size, falling
to 2.2% for 400–500 μm particle size at 13.4 ms−1. However, the MWAC’s efficiency was 0% for particles smaller than 50 μm and increased with increasing particle size to 69.5%
at 400–500 μm. In the experiments with different soil textures, the efficiency of each catcher significantly changed with
soil and with wind speed. It also considerably varied with the catchers: for instance, for sand (S), the MWAC efficiency was
very high (67.4, 113.4, and 90.5% at 10.3, 12.3, and 14.4 ms−1, respectively) while the efficiency of VS was relatively very low (5.2, 4.4, and 1.9% at 10.3, 12.3, and 14.4 ms−1, respectively). Results indicated that the efficiency depends critically on the particle size, type of catcher, and wind
speed, and these could be helpful to increase the robustness of wind erosion measurements. 相似文献

We report here the electrical resistivity measurements on two natural zeolites–natrolite and scolecite (from the Killari borehole, Maharashtra, India) as a function of pressure up to 8 GPa at room temperature. High-pressure electrical resistivity studies on hydrous alumino-silicate minerals are very helpful in understanding the role of water in deep crustal conductivities obtained from geophysical models. The results obtained by magneto-telluric (MT) soundings and direct current resistivity surveys, along with the laboratory data on the electrical resistivity of minerals and rocks at high-pressure–temperature are used to determine the electrical conductivity distribution in continental lithosphere. The electrical resistivity of natural natrolite decreases continuously from 2.9 × 109 Ω cm at ambient condition to 7.64 × 102 Ω cm at 8 GPa, at room temperature. There is no pressure-induced first order structural phase transitions in natrolite, when it is compressed in non-penetrating pressure transmitting medium up to 8 GPa. On the other hand scolecite exhibits a pressure-induced transition, with a discontinuous decrease of the electrical resistivity from 2.6 × 106 to 4.79 × 105 Ω cm at 4.2 to 4.3 GPa. The observed phase transition in scolecite is found to be irreversible. Vibrational spectroscopic and X-ray diffraction studies confirm the amorphous nature of the high-pressure phase. The results of the present high-pressure studies on scolecite are in good agreement with the high-pressure Raman spectroscopic data on scolecite. The thermo gravimetric studies on the pressure-quenched samples show that the samples underwent a pressure-induced partial dehydration. Such a pressure-induced partial dehydration, which has been observed in natural scolecite could explain the presence of high conductive layers in the earth's deep-crust. 相似文献

Large dam construction for irrigation, hydropower, water supply, and flood control in tropical to sub-tropical areas increased markedly after 1950. Many of the dams built during this period have filled with sediment and no longer perform to their original design specifications; in many cases, forecast dam life was greatly overestimated. This study investigates the useful life of Burdekin Falls Dam (BFD), northeastern Australia and compares the findings with other tropical reservoirs. Using two independent methods it is estimated that between 61 and 65 million m3 of sediment has been deposited in the reservoir over the 24 years of operation through 2011. This sediment volume equates to an average of 0.15% of capacity lost per year since construction was completed. If current sediment loads/climate regimes persist, reservoir capacity will be reduced by 50% after 345 years. However, the useful life of the BFD reduces to just 276 years when drawdown data are considered; these data show reservoir use would be affected once 40% of storage was filled with sediment, with a 60% drawdown return period of 1 in 15 years. When compared to similar large tropical to sub-tropical reservoirs, the BFD has a slightly longer reservoir useful life than dams in India and a much longer half-life than for both similar-sized and larger dams in China, Brazil, and Iran. Properties of the BFD that promote a longer useful life include a lower trap efficiency, relatively low annual sediment load delivered to the reservoir, limited sediment deposition behind the dam wall (and uniform distribution of deposited sediment), and the export of highly turbid annual floodwaters before settling and deposition of any remaining sediment within the reservoir. 相似文献

Zircons of 10–100μm size and monazites of up to 10μm size are present in rhyolite and trachyte dikes associated with Deccan
basalts around Rajula in the southern Saurashtra Peninsula of Gujarat. On the basis of structural conformity of the felsic
and basaltic dikes, K-Ar ages and trace element considerations, a previous study concluded that the felsic rocks are coeval
with the Deccan Volcanics and originated by crustal anatexis. The felsic rocks contain two populations of zircons and monazites,
one that crystallized from the felsic melt and the other that contains inherited crustal material. Trace element variations
in the rhyolites and trachytes indicate that zircons and monazites crystallized from the felsic melts, but compositional analysis
of a zircon indicates the presence of a small core possibly inherited from the crust. Hf compositional zoning profile of this
zircon indicates that it grew from the host rhyolitic melt while the melt differentiated, and Y and LREE contents suggest
that this zircon crystallized from the host melt. Pb contents of some monazites also suggest the presence of inherited crustal
cores. Hence, any age determination by the U-Th-Pb isotopic method should be interpreted with due consideration to crustal
inheritance. Temperatures estimated from zircon and monazite saturation thermometry indicate that the crust around Rajula
may have been heated to a maximum of approximately 900°C by the intruding Deccan magma. Crustal melting models of other workers
indicate that a 1–2 million year emplacement time for the Deccan Traps may be appropriate for crustal melting characteristics
observed in the Rajula area through the felsic dikes. 相似文献
