Darwin is a cornerstone mission of the Horizons 2000+ program of the European Space Agency. It has the express purpose of
carrying out the first direct search for terrestrial exoplanets, and to achieve unprecedented spatial resolution in the infrared wavelength region. The
detection and study of terrestrial exoplanets promises to usher in a new era in science and will affect a broad spectrum of
disciplines. Further, the time line for implementation of such an instrument is now likely to be of the close order of 10
years, leading to possible answers to one of mankind's most fundamental questions in the second decade of the 21st century.
It has been found that in order to realize am interferometer in space in the next 10–15 years, it is necessary to prepare
the way through a number of intermediary steps – both on the ground and in space. In this context, we here describe GENIE
– a ground based nulling interferometry experiment to be implemented at the VLTI in a partnership between ESA and ESO.

Uranium-series dating of oxygen and carbon isotope records for stalagmite SJ3 collected in Songjia Cave, central China, shows significant variation in past climate and environment during the period 20-10 ka. Stalagmite SJ3 is located more than 1000 km inland of the coastal Hulu Cave in East China and more than 700 km north of the Dongge Cave in Southwest China and, despite minor differences, displays a clear first-order similarity with the Hulu and Dongge records. The coldest climatic phase since the Last Glacial Maximum, which is associated with the Heinrich Event 1 in the North Atlantic region, was clearly recorded in SJ3 between 17.6 and 14.5 ka, in good agreement in timing, duration and extent with the records from Hulu and Dongge caves and the Greenland ice core. The results indicate that there have been synchronous and significant climatic changes across monsoonal China and strong teleconnections between the North Atlantic and East Asia regions during the period 20-10 ka. This is much different from the Holocene Optimum which shows a time shift of more than several thousands years from southeast coastal to inland China. It is likely that temperature change at northern high latitudes during glacial periods exerts stronger influence on the Asian summer monsoon relative to insolation and appears to be capable of perturbing large-scale atmospheric/oceanic circulation patterns in the Northern Hemisphere and thus monsoonal rainfall and paleovegetation in East Asia. Climatic signals in the North Atlantic region propagate rapidly to East Asia during glacial periods by influencing the winter land-sea temperature contrast in the East Asian monsoon region. 相似文献

位于赣西武功山地区的江西浒坑钨矿是一个大型石英脉型钨矿床,与赣南典型的“五层楼”模式不同,矿脉主要集中在岩体内接触带。含矿石英脉除了普通的块状构造以外,还普遍存在条带状构造。详细的野外编录和镜下研究表明含矿块状石英脉在形成后遭受不同程度的韧性剪切,从而形成不同成分的分异条带。剪切带以出现新生的面理和线理(拉伸线理)为特征。岩石学研究表明条带状矿石属于糜棱岩,具有丰富的塑性变形显微构造特征。通过对含矿石英脉的构造解析,认为与岩浆岩有关的原生节理系统基本上是同时形成的,沿节理充填的石英脉经历了长期的、多期次的构造运动,从而形成了复杂的石英脉和矿石类型。建立了原生节理形成→石英充填→韧性剪切发生→二期石英充填→脆性碎裂的矿区构造演化序列。韧性剪切作用的动力学背景可能是受后期岩浆侵入的影响,最后的脆性破裂应与区域上存在南北向的压应力有关。 相似文献

The Hill Country of Central Texas, USA, is undergoing rapid socioeconomic development, but environmental management of this
region is hampered by misconceptions about local bedrock, soils, terrain, and hydrologic processes. The Hill Country is underlain
mostly by Glen Rose Limestone (Lower Cretaceous) and exhibits a stepped terrain, which has been incorrectly attributed to
alternating hard and soft bedrock strata. Other characteristics mistakenly attributed to this landscape include thin soils
with scant water-retention capabilities, and rapid runoff as the dominant hydrologic process. This report presents new findings:
unweathered bedrock is well indurated, but interbeds exhibit variable weathering rates. Recessive slopes (“risers”) on this
stepped terrain result from rapid deterioration of strata having generally heterogeneous depositional fabrics (bioturbation
and irregular clay partings) in contrast to ledge-forming strata having homogeneous fabrics. A stony regolith is thus formed
beneath risers, providing porous and permeable ground that retards runoff and promotes the formation of moderately deep to
deep (two-tiered) regolith/soil zones. These surficial materials on local steep slopes compose important natural environmental
buffers; they support diverse biota and enhanced geochemical cycling of nutrients; they also exhibit significant water retention
and enhanced erosion abatement. Proper land management demands recognition of these attributes in the siting, design, and

New chronological, geochemical, and isotopic data are reported for Triassic (219–236 Ma) adakite-magnesian andesite-Nb-enriched
basaltic rock associations from the Tuotuohe area, central Qiangtang terrane. The adakites and magnesian andesites are characterized
by high Sr/Y (25–45), La/Yb (14–42) and Na2O/K2O (12–49) ratios, high Al2O3 (15.34–18.28 wt%) and moderate to high Sr concentrations (220–498 ppm) and εND (t) (+0.86 to +1.21) values. Low enrichments of Th, Rb relative to Nb, and subequal normalized Nb and La contents, and enrichments
of light rare earth elements combine to distinguish a group of Nb-enriched basaltic rocks (NEBs). They have positive εND (t) (+2.57 to +5.16) values. Positive correlations between Th, La and Nb and an absence of negative Nb anomalies on mantle
normalized plots indicate the NEBs are products of a mantle source metasomatized by a slab melt rather than by hydrous fluids.
A continuous compositional variation between adakites and magnesian andesites confirms slab melt interaction with mantle peridotite.
The spatial association of the NEBs with adakites and magnesian andesites define an “adakitic metasomatic volcanic series”
recognized in many demonstrably subduction-related environments (e.g., Mindanao arc, Philippines; Kamchatka arc, Russia; and
southern Baja California arc, Mexico). The age of the Touhuohe suite, and its correlation with Triassic NEB to the north indicates
that volcanism derived from subduction-modified mantle was abundant prior to 220 Ma in the central Qiangtang terrane. 相似文献

This paper explores the radical possibilities of pragmatism for geography using the illustration of arguments concerning a renewed (urban) public realm through the exchange of validity claims in communication. Pressing further the pragmatist possibilities of Habermas’s idea of communicative action it draws on John Dewey’s work, and a range of contemporary pragmatist philosophers, to consider human communicability in its widest sense. This is then explored using an example of the spatiality and performativity of body-minds in a range of communicative spaces of the city. In this paper, we analyse the ability of the nonlinear shallow-water (NSW) equations to predict wave distortion and energy dissipation of periodic broken waves in the inner surf zone. This analysis is based on the weak-solution theory for conservative equations. We derive a new one-way model, which applies to the transformation of non-reflective periodic broken waves on gently sloping beaches. This model can be useful to develop breaking-wave parameterizations (in particular broken-wave celerity expression) in both time-averaged wave models and time-dependent Boussinesq-type models. We also derive a new wave set-up equation which provides a simple and explicit relation between wave set-up and energy dissipation. Finally, we compare numerical simulations of both, the NSW model and the simplified one-way model, with spilling wave breaking experiments and we find a good agreement. 相似文献

对厦门海沧邻近海域表层沉积物中的重矿物(0.063~0.125mm粒级)进行了分析和研究,结果表明该粒级的重矿物共计49种,其优势和特征矿物为磁铁矿、赤铁矿、褐铁矿、绿帘石、铁铁矿、角闪石、锆石、红柱石等;重矿物的平均质量分数为9.56%;根据重矿物的分布和含量,并结合主要标志矿物的颗粒百分含量和分布特征,将该海域划分为5个矿物组合区,根据各区的矿物组合类型分析了该海域的物质来源及影响重矿物分布和组合的因素,进而探讨了九龙江河口湾和厦门西港海湾的沉积环境。 相似文献
