Methods are reviewed for analysing highly localised failure and bifurcation modes in discretised mechanical systems as typically arise in numerical simulations of failure in soils, rocks, metals and concrete. By the example of a plane-strain biaxial test it is shown that strain softening and lack of normality in elasto-plastic constitutive equations and the ensuing loss of ellipticity of the governing field equations cause a pathological mesh dependence of numerical solutions for such problems, thus rendering the results effectively meaningless. The need for introduction of higher-order continuum models is emphasised to remedy this shortcoming of the conventional approach. For one such a continuum model, namely the unconstrained Cosserat continuum, it is demonstrated that meaningful and convergent solutions (in the sense that a finite width of the localisation zone is computed upon mesh refinement) can be obtained.  相似文献

By observing the variation of fault soil gases,we can understand the activity of faults and information on earthquake precursors.Two fault soil gas observation spots were set up at the Xiadian fault east of Beijing and at the Houhaoyao geothermal area in Huailai(Hebei Province)during November-December 1989.Concentrations of fault soil gases H2,Ar,CO2,CH4,Hg,etc.were observed.Before several moderate-strong earthquakes in 1990,the concentrations of fault soil gases such as H2 and Hg all showed abnormal variations quite significantly.In this paper,we mainly discuss the relation of these fault soil gases to earthquake activity.  相似文献

本文对黄石台ORBES-81型石英伸缩仪的应变固体潮观测资料作了分析计算,其调和分析结果为:对O1波,振幅因子0.4219,相位滞后6°36';对M2波,振幅因子0.4256,相位滞后-4°42'.同时,讨论了海潮引起的负荷潮汐应变的改正问题.模拟计算发现负荷潮汐应变与体潮应变大致为同一量级,文中列出了海潮改正后的结果,并作了讨论.最后,对黄石台伸缩仪的架设方位作了评价.  相似文献

介绍了差应变分析法(DSA)原地应力测量技术原理,并采用此法对河南省洛阳—伊川盆地屯1井岩样进行了测试,结果显示该井1153.4~1167.8 m处最大水平主应力为北西向(141°—157°),与钻孔崩落椭圆长轴方位统计得到的最大水平主应力方向一致;最大水平应力数值小于铅直应力,属于正断层应力状态;主应力随深度线性增大。对该区域注采井网布局给出了建议,即本区注采井网布设应避免与141°—157°方向平行。  相似文献

North Norfolk is a classic area for the study of glacial sediments with a complex glaciotectonic deformational history, but the processes leading to the formation of some structures can be ambiguous. Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) analyses, providing quantitative fabric data, have been combined with the analysis of visible structures and applied to the Bacton Green Till Member, exposed at Bacton, Norfolk. Thermomagnetic curves, low temperature susceptibility and acquisition of isothermal remanent magnetism (IRM) reveal that the magnetic mineralogy is dominated by paramagnetic phases. The magnetic foliation is parallel to fold axial planes and weakly inclined to bedding, whilst the magnetic lineation is orientated parallel to stretching, indicated by the presence of stretching lineations and the trend of sheath folds. Variations in the orientation of the magnetic lineation suggest that the Bacton section has been subject to polyphase deformation. After subaqueous deposition, the sequence was overridden by ice and glaciotectonically deformed which involved stretching initially north–south, then east–west. These results show that AMS can be used to detect strain in three dimensions through a glaciotectonite where paramagnetic mineralogy is dominant. This approach therefore provides further support to the use of AMS as a fast, objective and accurate method of examining strain within deformed glacial sediments.  相似文献

Quartz Crystallographic Preferred Orientation (CPO) patterns are most commonly a result of deformation by dislocation creep. We investigated whether Dissolution–Precipitation Creep (DPC), a process that occurs at lower differential stresses and temperatures, may result in CPO in quartz. The Purgatory Conglomerate is part of the SE Narragansett basin where strain intensity increases from west to east and is associated with top-to-the-west transport and folding during the Alleghanian orogeny. Within the Purgatory Conglomerate, DPC led to quartz dissolution along cobble surfaces perpendicular to the shortening direction, and quartz precipitation in overgrowths at the ends of the cobbles (strain shadows), parallel to the maximum extension direction. Quartz c-axis orientations as revealed by Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) methods were random in all analyzed domains within the cobbles and strain shadows irrespective of the intensity of strain or metamorphic grade of the sample. Quartz dissolution probably occurred exclusively along the cobbles' margins, leaving the remaining grains unaffected by DPC. The fact that quartz precipitated in random orientations may indicate that the strain shadows were regions of little or no differential stress.  相似文献

Arrays of closely-spaced (approximately <70 mm) sub-parallel cataclastic deformation bands are common structures in deformed, high-porosity (∼10–35%) sandstones. The distribution of strain onto many small-displacement deformation bands is thought by some to result from strain-hardening of the cataclasite within individual bands. Examination of both normal and strike-slip faults with displacements ≤7 m from southeastern Utah, USA, and the North Island of New Zealand suggests, however, that clusters of deformation bands systematically develop at fault geometric irregularities (e.g., fault bends, steps, relays, intersections and zones of normal drag). The strain-hardening model does not account for clustering of deformation bands at fault geometric irregularities or the associated widespread coalescence of bands, and is not unequivocally demonstrated by post-peak macroscopic mechanical responses in laboratory rock deformation experiments. A geometric model is proposed in which individual bands within clusters develop sequentially due to migration of incremental shear strains at fault geometric irregularities as part of a slip localisation, asperity removal and strain weakening process. The geometric model, which does not require strain hardening of the fault rock, applies for the duration of faulting and a range of rock types in the brittle upper crust.  相似文献

The Anita Peridotite, in southwestern New Zealand, is a ∼1 × 20 km ultramafic massif that was rapidly extruded from beneath a Cretaceous arc within the 4 km wide mylonitic Anita Shear Zone. The peridotitic body contains a spectacular array of textures that preserve evidence for changing temperature, stress, and deformation mechanisms during the exhumation process. Olivine and orthopyroxene microstructures and lattice-preferred orientations (LPO) record a three-phase deformation history. Dislocation glide on the C- and E-type slip systems is recorded by coarse pre-mylonitised olivine grains, and occurred under hydrous conditions at T ∼650 °C, stress ∼200–700 MPa and strain rate ∼10−15 s−1, probably within hydrated sub-arc mantle lithosphere. Rare protomylonite pods record deformation by dislocation creep in porphyroclasts and dislocation-accommodated grain boundary sliding in the matrix on {0kl}[100] in olivine and (100)[001] in orthopyroxene, under conditions of T ∼730–770 °C, stress ∼52–700 MPa and strain rate ∼10−15 s−1. The massif, however, is dominated by mylonite and ultramylonite that wrap the protomylonite pods, comprising mostly fine-grained olivine neoblasts that lack internal distortions and have uniform LPOs. These textures indicate deformation occurred by grain-size sensitive (GSS) creep at T ∼650 °C, stress ∼69–137 MPa and strain rate ∼10−15 s−1, and thus during conditions of cooling and decreasing stress. GSS creep became more dominant with time, as the proportion of randomly-oriented neoblasts increased and formed interlinked networks that accommodated much of the strain. Grain boundary pinning allowed GSS creep to be maintained in polyphase regions, following mixing of olivine and orthopyroxene, which may have occurred by grain boundary transport in a fluid phase during a “creep cavitation” process. The results indicate that the Anita Peridotite recrystallised and underwent rheological weakening at a constant strain rate, with strain distributed across the entire section. This widespread deformation caused rapid exhumation of the peridotite from the lithospheric mantle into the overlying arc crust. The massif therefore records multiple overprinting phases of deformation under mantle and crustal conditions associated with the rapid exhumation of a large orogenic peridotite.  相似文献
