Many species from the family Poeciliidae have been transported around the world by the aquarium trade, often establishing populations in areas far outside their natural range. The one‐spot livebearer, Phalloceros caudimaculatus is one such poeciliid species. In March 2002, a nonindigenous population of P. caudimaculatus was discovered at Collaroy, in the Sydney metropolitan area, the first record of this species in eastern Australia. Following this discovery, electrofishing and light‐trap surveys were conducted at the site, and dip‐netting and visual surveys were conducted in surrounding water bodies. P. caudimaculatus was widespread and abundant at the Collaroy site, but no further populations were discovered. Another pest poeciliid species, Gambusia holbrooki, originally present at the site, was absent and, although the mechanism remains unclear, may have been displaced by P. caudimaculatus. Both P. caudimaculatus and G. holbrooki share the characteristics of successful invasive species, with extremely broad physical tolerances and high reproductive outputs. Given the well‐documented negative ecological effects of poeciliids, especially G. holbrooki, we recommend that a precautionary approach should be adopted for the management of P. caudimaculatus and its eradication from the site be attempted.  相似文献

河南信阳周庄变基性侵入岩体出露于华北克拉通南缘,主要由斜长石+角闪石(+绿帘石)组成,可见残余辉长结构,属经历了绿帘角闪岩相-低角闪岩相变质的变辉长岩.对变辉长岩的两个样品中的锆石进行了LA-ICPMS U-Pb同位素测年分析.这两个样品都给出了859Ma的谐和上交点年龄,但分别给出了356±82Ma和234±36Ma的谐和下交点年龄.其中一个样品还给出了另外两组谐和的年龄,它们的~(206)Pb/~(238)U表面年龄分别是616±10Ma和442±6.5Ma.我们解释共同的谐和上交点年龄(859Ma)代表着岩体的侵位时代,是Rodinia超大陆裂解事件在华北克拉通南缘的早期记录(如基性岩浆侵入作用);其他四组年龄是岩体后期所经历改造事件的年龄记录,包括新元古代晚期的再次裂解(如变质重结晶作用)和古生代、早中生代时期扬子克拉通向北的俯冲-碰撞对华北南缘的强烈改造过程.  相似文献

Summary. New palaeomagnetic results from Australia indicate that throughout the Cenozoic era the continent lay further south than suggested by hot-spot data. Moreover, while hot spots give a uniform rate of drift during most of the Cenozoic, the drift rate obtained from apparent polar wander varies considerably.
The discrepancies between the palaeomagnetic and hot-spot results are analysed by comparing the Australian data with those of Europe and the central Pacific. The analysis suggests that the discrepancies are due to: (1) departures of the Earth's magnetic field from the geocentric axial dipole model, and (2), either true polar wander or a non-axial inclined dipole component. It is found that since the mid-Tertiary the dominant non-dipole component has been a quadrupole, and that during this period both the quadrupolar field and the true polar displacement/non-axial dipole component decreased progressively. During the Quaternary, and also at the earliest Tertiary, the non-dipole components appear to have been moderate or small.
The comparison of data sets demonstrates that considerable errors may be incurred when Cenozoic, and presumably earlier, poles from one geographic region are used to derive those of another, widely separated, region. The results also imply that absolute plate velocities estimated from palaeomagnetic data can contain substantial errors, and that hot-spot data may need significant adjustments for true polar wander to yield correct palaeolatitudes.
Finally, the new early Tertiary pole for Australia is used in conjunction with updated early Tertiary poles from other lithospheric plates to reapply the McKenzie test for true polar wander. The results indicate a small true polar displacement since the beginning of the Tertiary. The amount and direction of the displacement, however, differ from those generally obtained from hot-spot data.  相似文献

Nearly 6 m of uncompacted muddy sediment was recovered from the floor of the northern Coorong Lagoon in the core Coorong #5. Radiocarbon analyses of molluscan shells indicate that sedimentation at the core site commenced before 6830 ± 90 yr cal BP, and the presence of Pinus pollen confirms a modern age for the uppermost 0.5 m. Microfossils extracted from the core sediment samples, 2 cm slices at 10 cm intervals, included the foraminifera Ammonia sp., Elphidium excavatum and Elphidium gunteri; the ostracods Osticythere baragwanathi and Leptocythere lacustris; and charophyte oogonia. Shell fragments of the estuarine bivalve Spisula (Notospisula) trigonella in the lowermost 0.7 m of the core are evidence that these sediments were subject to some marine influence, but the absence of foraminifera and ostracods from this same interval indicates that at the core site salinity was not sufficient to support populations of these organisms. Thus, prior to 6830 ± 90 yr cal BP the Younghusband Peninsula was in place, in part isolating the northern lagoon from the Southern Ocean. The initial recorded salinity event is signified by abundant Ammonia sp. at a core depth of 5.2 m. The duration of this event was relatively brief; foraminifera were mostly absent in the immediately overlying 2 m, representing ca 700 yr of sedimentation. This observation is attributed to substantial inflow of freshwater from the River Murray. In the upper 3.0 m, Ammonia sp. was present in most core samples indicating that for most of the past 6000 years the Coorong Lagoon has been sufficiently saline to support a continuing population of this species. At a core depth of 1.3 m, the sediment sample yielded >2000 tests of Ammonia sp., and they were accompanied by maximum pre-modern numbers of E. excavatum, O. baragwanathi and oogonia. Taken together, these data signify the maximum pre-modern salinity event recorded in the core sediments, probably correlating in time with regional drought conditions at ca 3500 yr BP. Elphidium gunteri is confined to the modern sediments where it is abundant and accompanied by equally large numbers of Ammonia sp., E. excavatum, O. baragwanathi and L. lacustris. These data collectively indicate water conditions that are significantly changed from those that prevailed in the Coorong Lagoon for most of the Holocene.  相似文献

A survey method previously developed for estimating potential net primary production (PN) of mangrove forests was applied at 19 widely separated sites in tropical northern Australia and six sites in the Gulf of Papua. These estimates are compared with previous results for mangrove forests at Hinchinbrook Island, north Queensland. Surveys of soil properties in these areas indicate that low availability of soil phosphorus is a major contributing factor to the consistently in PN estimates of Cape York and North-western Australian forests (range in PN=11–26; mean PN= 19kg C ha?1 day?1) compared with the Hinchin-brook Island and Gulf of Papua forests (range in PN=3–38; mean PN=26 kg C ha?1 day?1). The regional variation and possible effects of other soil properties, such as redox potential and salinity, are discussed briefly. It is suggested that the generally low salinities and moderate soil redox status may partially offset the effects of low soil P in the Cape York region.  相似文献

Fission track thermotectonic imaging of the Australian continent   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Fission track analyses of apatites from a very large data set across Australia provide a first look at the patterns of low-temperature thermochronology over an entire continent. The rock samples are mostly of granitic rocks, or their metamorphic equivalents, of Palaeozoic or older age from the exposed basement regions. Sample chemical analyses indicate that the apatite suite is overwhelmingly of fluorapatite composition. Approximately 2750 fission track analyses have been completed, of which >1700 are of sufficient quality to form a coherent data set that can be interpolated to show the variation of central fission track age and mean confined track length on a continental scale. The resulting images exhibit some features which are well known, such as the trend towards young apatite ages along the eastern and southeastern rifted continental margins, but others that are more surprising, such as the lack of clear differentiation, in terms of the range of ages and lengths, between the older Precambrian cratonic areas in the west, and younger Phanerozoic mobile belts to the east. The Precambrian rocks from the western two-thirds of the continent do, however, show distinctly different cooling histories to those in the eastern Phanerozoic mobile belts when the relationships between track lengths and fission track ages are considered. The western craton everywhere shows patterns of prolonged slow cooling, whereas all major regions of the eastern part of the continent show discrete episodes of rapid cooling, mostly from the Jurassic to the Palaeogene. Significant areas of unusually young apatite ages (<50 Ma) are found in Tasmania and in Precambrian rocks from the northern Gawler Block in South Australia. The most obvious regional cause of the overall fission track patterns across Australia is variation in surface denudation over time scales of hundreds of Ma. However, in some areas, such as the northern Gawler Block, other mechanisms such as the movement of hydrothermal fluids in former cover sequences must be invoked.  相似文献

We present hornblende, white mica, biotite and alkali feldspar 40Ar/39Ar data from Paleo-Mesoproterozoic rocks of the Mt. Isa Inlier, Australia, which reveal a previously unrecognised post-orogenic, non-linear cooling history of part of the Northern Australian Craton. Plateau and total fusion 40Ar/39Ar ages range between 1500 and 767 Ma and record increases in regional cooling rates of up to 4 °C/Ma during 1440–1390 and 1260–1000 Ma. Forward modelling of the alkali feldspar 40Ar/39Ar Arrhenius parameters reveals subsequent increases in cooling rates during 600–400 Ma. The cooling episodes were driven by both erosional exhumation at average rates of 0.25 km/Ma and thermal relaxation following crustal heating and magmatic events. Early Mesoproterozoic cooling is synchronous with exhumation and shearing in the Arunta Block and Gawler Craton. Late Mesoproterozoic cooling could have either been driven by increased rates of exhumation, or a result of thermal relaxation following a heat pulse that was synchronous with dyke emplacement in the Arunta, Musgrave and Mt. Isa province, as well as Grenville-aged orogenesis in the Albany–Fraser Belt. Latest Neoproterozoic–Cambrian cooling and exhumation was probably driven by the convergence of part of the East Antarctic Shield with the Musgrave Block and Western Australia (Petermann Ranges Orogeny), as well as collisional tectonics that produced the Delamerian–Ross Orogen. Major changes in the stress field and geothermal gradients of the Australian plate that are synchronous with the assembly and break-up of parts of Rodinia and Gondwana resulted in shearing and repeated brittle reactivation of the Mt. Isa Inlier, probably via the displacement of long-lived basement faults within the Northern Australian Craton.  相似文献

World-wide, people and governments are gradually becoming more aware of the potential environmental, economic and health effects of climate change and the need for governments to take action to mitigate such impacts. This was emphasised by the creation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), signed at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992. There has been much discussion on the greenhouse policy response of the commonwealth government of Australia, especially its stance taken at Kyoto in December 1997. Despite the recent nationalisation of Australia's state energy markets, due to Australia's federal political structure, much of the policy responsibility for energy and environmental issues rests with the states. Given these circumstances it is surprising that there has been relatively little academic focus on the energy policies of the states. This paper attempts to partially fill the policy analysis 'gap' by investigating the present environmental aspects of the energy policies of NSW and Victoria, implemented since the signing of the UNFCCC in 1992. NSW and Victoria are Australia's most populous states and are responsible for the bulk of the nation's greenhouse gas emissions with two very distinct policies.  相似文献

Over the past century the cultural and physical landscape of the Shire of Denmark on the south coast of Western Australia has been transformed by successive waves of in-migrants. The paper examines the period since the early 1970s when alternative lifestylers and early retirees, attracted by the district's natural beauty and low land prices, began moving in and acquiring former Group Settlement holdings. The activities of these and subsequent 'alternatives' and 'cashed out' early retirees settling in the district have raised the marketability of the Shire's cultural capital. These changes have occurred in association with broader processes of rural restructuring and changing notions of 'rurality'. Increasingly, Denmark's cultural and physical landscape has become a highly marketable product for consumption by Perth's affluent middle classes. In recent years land prices have risen rapidly as speculators and financiers seek to 'cash in' on the 'cashed out' society. The paper explores these issues and relates them to broader processes of economic and social change occurring at the national and international levels.  相似文献
