We found a simple function of pH that relates to sea surface temperature (SST, K) and chlorophyll-a (Chl, µg l−1) using measured surface seawater pH, SST and Chl data sets over the North Pacific: pH (total hydrogen scale at 2°C) = 0.01325 SST − 0.0253 Chl + 4.150 (R2 = 0.95, p < 0.0001, n = 483). Moreover, evaluating the seasonal variation of pH based on this algorithm, we compared the measured pH with the predicted pH at the observational time series stations in subpolar and subtropical regions. The average of ΔpH (measured - predicted, n = 52) was 0.006 ± 0.022 pH. Therefore, the combination of SST and Chl can allow us to determine the spatiotemporal distribution of pH over the North Pacific. Using the climatological data sets of SST and Chl with our pH algorithms, we have described the seasonal distributions of pH at 25°C (pH(25)) and pH in situ temperature (pH(T)) over the North Pacific surface water.  相似文献

Diatoms represent the major part of the microfossils preserved in the subarctic Pacific sediments. During the warm climate intervals the diatom accumulation rate (DAR) tended to increase, whereas it tended to decrease during the cold intervals. Principal component (PC) analysis of the fossil diatom assemblages in Piston Core KH99-3 ES samples from the subarctic Pacific was carried out to investigate the paleoceanographic conditions of the area. PC1 (59.9% of the total variance) was represented by Neodenticula seminae, a characteristic species representing the high nutrient concentrations, which dominated during the interglacial periods. The DAR and PC changes can be attributed to a global origin that is influenced by the nutrient change due to intermediate water change and to a local one that is explained by the change of upwelling region. The analysis of PC2 (17.1% of the total variance) indicates the change of water mass in the western subarctic Pacific. During Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 2 and 3, the western subarctic Pacific region was significantly influenced by the sea-ice, which may have been derived from the coastal region or a proximal marginal sea. A multi-channel seismic reflection image shows the reflection Moho dipping toward the Clipperton Fracture Zone in crust 1.4 my old. This seismic line crosses the fracture zone at its eastern intersection with the East Pacific Rise. The seismic observations are made in travel time, not depth. To establish constraints on crustal structure despite the absence of direct velocity determinations in this region, the possible effects of temperature, tectonism, and anomalous lithospheric structure have been considered. Conductive, advective, and frictional heating of the old crust proximal to the ridge-transform intersection can explain <20% of the observed travel-time increase. Heating has a negligible effect on crustal seismic velocity beyond ~10 km from the ridge tip. The transform tectonized zone extends only 6 km from the ridge tip. Serpentinization is unlikely to have thickened the seafloor-to-reflection Moho section in this case. It is concluded that, contrary to conventional wisdom, the 1.4 my old Cocos Plate crust thickens approaching the eastern Clipperton Ridge-Transform Intersection. Increase in thickness must be at least 0.9 km between 22 and 3 km from the fracture zone.  相似文献

Distributions and characteristics of water mass and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in the North Pacific are investigated by using a General Circulation Model (GCM). The anthropogenic CO2 uptake by the ocean is estimated with velocity fields derived from the GCM experiments. The sensitivity of the uptake to different diffusion parameterizations and different surface forcing used in the GCM is investigated by conducting the three GCM experiments; the diffusive processes are parameterized by horizontal and vertical eddy diffusion which is used in many previous models (RUN1), parameterized by isopycnal diffusion (RUN2), and isopycnal diffusion and perpetual winter forcing for surface temperature and salinity (RUN3). Realistic features for water masses and CFCs can be simulated by the isopycnal diffusion models. The horizontal and vertical diffusion model fails to simulate the salinity minimum and realistic penetration of CFCs into the ocean. The depth of the salinity minimum layer is better simulated under the winter forcing. The results suggest that both isopycnal parameterization and winter forcing are crucial for the model water masses and CFCs simulations. The oceanic uptake of anthropogenic CO2 in RUN3 is about 19.8 GtC in 1990, which is larger by about 10% than that in RUN1 with horizontal and vertical diffusive parameterization. RUN3 well simulates the realistic water mass structure of the intermediate layer considered as a candidate of oceanic sink for anthropogenic CO2. The results suggest that the previous models with horizontal and vertical diffusive parameterization may give the oceanic uptake of anthropogenic CO2 underestimated. Using time series of hydrographic data in the wintertime and summertime obtained along 137°E from 1971 to 2000, we found that the average contents of nutrients in the surface mixed layer showed linear decreasing trends of 0.001∼0.004 μmol-PO4 l−1 yr−1 and 0.01∼0.04 μmol-NO3 l−1 yr−1 with the decrease of density. The water column Chl-a (CHL) and the net community production (NCP) had also declined by 0.27∼0.48 mg-Chl m−2 yr−1 and 0.08∼0.47 g-C-NCP m−2 yr−1 with a clear oscillation of 20.8±0.8 years. These changes showed a strong negative correlation with the Pacific Decadal Oscillation Index (PDO) with a time lag of 2 years (R = 0.89 ± 0.02). Considering the recent significant decrease of O2 over the North Pacific subsurface water, these findings suggest that the long-term decreasing trend of surface-deep water mixing has caused the decrease of marine biological activity in the surface mixed layer with a bidecadal oscillation over the western North Pacific.  相似文献

Vertical distributions of coccolithophores were observed in the depth range 0–50 m in the western subarctic Pacific and western Bering Sea in summer, 1997. Thirty-five species of coccolithophores were collected. Overall, Emiliania huxleyi var. huxleyi was the most abundant taxon, accounting for 82.8% of all coccolithophores, although it was less abundant in the western Bering Sea. Maximum abundance of this species was found in an area south of 41°N and east of 175°E (Transition Zone) reaching >10,000 cells L−1 in the water column. In addition to this species, Coccolithus pelagicus f. pelagicus, which accounted for 4.2% of the assemblage, was representative of the coccolithophore standing crop in the western part of the subarctic Pacific. Coccolithus pelagicus f. hyalinus was relatively abundant in the Bering Sea, accounting for 2.6% of the assemblage. Coccolithophore standing crops in the top 50 m were high south of 41°N (>241 × 106 cells m−2) and east of 170°E (542 × 106 cells m−2) where temperatures were higher than 12°C and salinities were greater than 34.2. The lowest standing crop was observed in the Bering Sea and Oyashio areas where temperatures were lower than 6–10°C and salinities were less than 33.0. From the coccolithophore volumes, the calcite stocks in the Transition, Subarctic, and the Bering Sea regions were estimated to be 73.0, 9.7, and 6.9 mg m−2, respectively, corresponding to calcite fluxes of 3.6, 0.5, and 0.3 mg m−2d−1 using Stoke's Law. The Meteorological Research Institute's ocean general circulation model (MRI-OGCM) has been used to investigate the temperature variability of the North Pacific Subtropical Mode Water (NPSTMW) over a time series longer than 5 years via the spin-up of the subtropical gyre. Besides an interannual variation, the wintertime sea surface temperature in the area where the NPSTMW is formed, and the temperature of the NPSTMW itself, both change remarkably in a >5-year time scale. An analysis of heat budgets showed that the long-term changes in NPSTMW temperature are due mainly to a leading advection of heat by the Kuroshio Extension and compensating surface heat flux. As a result of a dynamical adjustment to the wind stress fields, the transports of the Kuroshio and the Kuroshio Extension increased in the mid 1970s with a lag of 3 years after the wind stress curl in the central North Pacific. The increased heat advection by the Kuroshio Extension induces a warming in the mixed layer in the NPSTMW formation area, followed by a warming of the NPSTMW itself. Both these warming actions increase the heat release to the atmosphere. These results imply that the surface heat flux over the Kuroshio Extension area varies in response to the change in the ocean circulation through the spin-up of the subtropical gyre. 本文通过对不同水深区沉积物中组分、生物面貌、矿物、CaCO3含量和碳酸钙溶解率等特征的分析和对比,把本区碳酸钙溶解深度带划分为碳酸钙溶跃面(小于3700m)、弱溶带(3700~4800m)、强溶带(4800~5200m)和全溶带(大于5200m)。提出本海域碳酸钙补偿深度界面约在5200m。文中还阐述了不同碳酸钙溶解带及其沉积物特征,认为造成这种特征的主要原因是随着水深变化碳酸钙溶解程度不同以及与南极底层流等因素的影响有关。  相似文献

依据多金属结核CCC14剖面上Mn、Fe、Ni、Cu的含量和有关的公式,本文计算该结核生长过程中瞬时生长速率和Mn、Fe、Ni、Cu的瞬时通量,并在结核中建立时间标尺,划分和对比结核生长阶段,重建结核CCC148.793Ma,B.P.以来的生长历史。研究结果表明,采用由铁、锰含量计算结核生长速率的公式,可详细了解结核生长过程,并能识别与提取强核中古海洋信息记录。  相似文献
