In this paper, we present some preliminary results of numerical simulations of a globular cluster orbiting in the inner region of a triaxial galaxy. The formation and evolution of tidal tails around the cluster is discussed, together with their morphology, which shows clumpy substructures as observed, for example, in the galactic globular cluster Palomar 5.  相似文献

Solute leaching in unsaturated soil is influenced by the variability in hydraulic functions (water retention and conductivity) that govern the flow process. Variability in measured soil hydraulic functions of a coarse-, medium- and fine-textured soil group was quantified with the scaling theory of similar media. Solute leaching in these soils was calculated with Monte Carlo simulation assuming, successively, hydraulic conductivity, K, volumetric water content, 0, and pressure head, h, to be constant. In addition to variability in hydraulic functions, variability in the solute retardation factor was also taken into account. To examine this effect five solutes were considered: a conservative solute (chloride), a non-retarded solute subject to decay (nitrate), a retarded solute that does not decay (cadmium) and two organic solutes which are retarded but have different sorption and decay parameters (the pesticide atrazine and a chlorinated hydrocarbon). The numerical results obtained with Monte Carlo simulation were in a number of instances verified with analytical solutions. The three soil groups distinguished showed considerable differences in vulnerability for leaching of the five solutes, emphasizing the importance of the effect of variability in soil hydraulic functions when studying solute leaching. Numerical and analytical results showed good agreement. Therefore, in relatively simple situations analytical solutions are attractive. However, in complicated situations, analytical solutions are cumbersome and numerical solutions are the only realistic alternative.  相似文献

By means of Monte Carlo simulations a comparison has been made between ordinary least squaresregression and robust regression. The robust regression procedure is based on the Huber estimate and iscomputed by means of the iteratively reweighted least squares algorithm. The performance of bothprocedures has been evaluated for estimation of the parameters of a calibration function and fordetermination of the concentration of unknown samples. The influence of the distributionalcharacteristics skewness and kurtosis has been studied, and the number of measurements used forconstructing the calibration curve has also been taken into account, Under certain conditions robustregression offers an advantage over least squares regression.  相似文献

Little consensus exists on how best to analyze natural fracture spacings and their sequences. Field measurements and analyses published in geotechnical literature imply fracture processes radically different from those assumed by theoretical structural geologists. The approach adopted in this paper recognizes that disruption of rock layers by layer-parallel extension results in two spacing distributions, one representing layer-fragment lengths and another separation distances between fragments. These two distributions and their sequences reflect mechanics and history of fracture and separation. Such distributions and sequences, represented by a 2 × nmatrix of lengths L,can be analyzed using a method that is history sensitive and which yields also a scalar estimate of bulk extension, e(L).The method is illustrated by a series of Monte Carlo experiments representing a variety of fracture-and-separation processes, each with distinct implications for extension history. Resulting distributions of e(L) are process-specific, suggesting that the inverse problem of deducing fracture-and-separation history from final structure may be tractable.  相似文献

With the increasing application of floating platforms in deep waters and harsh environments,a proper assessment of the reliability of floating structures is important to ensure that these structures can operate safely during their design lives.This study outlines a practical methodology for reliability analysis of a semi-submersible platform based estimating the probability distribution of the extreme response in rough sea conditions(survival conditions).The Constrained NewWave(CNW)theory combined with Monte Carlo simulations was first applied to simulate the random wave surface elevation process in the time domain.A Gumbel distribution was the best fitting to describe the dynamically sensitive extreme response statistics under extreme waves(drift and mooring tension).The derived probability distribution of the extreme response was subsequently used in estimation of the associated limit state func-tion,and a reliability analysis of the floating structure was conducted using the Monte Carlo method.A semi-submersible platform in a water depth of 1500 m subjected to extreme wave loads was used to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed methodology.The probability of failure of the semi-submersible when considering mooring lines tension is greater than considering drift.  相似文献

The effect of heterogeneity of soils on a seismic design procedure based on residual displacement according to safety factors is examined. Although soils are heterogeneous in nature, at present the seismic designs of embankments implement the assumption that soils are homogeneous. In this study, a seismic reliability analysis using a Monte Carlo simulation and considering the heterogeneity of soil strength was applied to the Newmark sliding block method. The data of the analysis in this study were based on in-situ soil test results of actual airport embankments. This paper indicates a rational and practical approach to modifying the actual heterogeneous soil conditions into homogeneous design parameters for the Newmark sliding block method in homogeneous ground conditions.  相似文献
