Field investigations reveal spatial variations in fault zone width along strike-slip active faults of the Arima–Takatsuki Tectonic Line (ATTL) and the Rokko–Awaji Fault Zone (RAFZ) of southwest Japan, which together form a left-stepping geometric pattern. The fault zones are composed of damage zones dominated by fractured host rocks, non-foliated and foliated cataclasites, and a fault core zone that consists of cataclastic rocks including fault gouge and fault breccia. The fault damage zones of the ATTL are characterized by subsidiary faults and fractures that are asymmetrically developed on each side of the main fault. The width of the damage zone varies along faults developed within granitic rocks of the ATTL and RAFZ, from ∼50 to ∼1000 m. In contrast, the width of the damage zone within rhyolitic tuff on the northwestern side of the ATTL varies from ∼30 to ∼100 m. The fault core zone is generally concentrated in a narrow zone of ∼0.5–∼5 m in width, consisting mainly of pulverized cataclastic rocks that lack the primary cohesion of the host rocks, including a narrow zone of fault gouge (<0.5 m) and fault-breccia zones either side of the fault. The present results indicate that spatial variations in the width of damage zone and the asymmetric distribution of damage zones across the studied strike-slip faults are mainly caused by local concentrations in compressive stress within an overstep area between left-stepping strike-slip faults of the ATTL and RAFZ. The findings demonstrate that fault zone structures and the spatial distribution in the width of damage zone are strongly affected by the geometric patterns of strike-slip faults.  相似文献

Although upper Campanian dinosaur assemblages are well-known from Alberta, Montana, southern Utah, and New Mexico, specimens from Wyoming and central and eastern Utah are very rare. This area constitutes a biogeographic break between northern and southern biogeographic provinces, so any specimens from this region are critical to understanding the origin, evolution, and limits of upper Campanian biogeographic zones on the west margin of the Western Interior Seaway. We report the discovery of a theropod dinosaur partial hindlimb from the Book Cliffs area northeast of Green River, Utah. The specimen was recovered from the Palisade coal zone in the Neslen Formation (Mesaverde Group), which is dated to the mid-Campanian based on ammonite biostratigraphy and radioisotopic age constraints. The specimen, comprising a partial fibula, the distal half of metatarsal II, a complete metatarsal IV, and a partial metatarsal V, can be assigned to Tyrannosauridae based on a number of synapomorphies, including a bipartite iliofibularis tubercle on the fibula and a teardrop shaped articular surface for metatarsal III on the medial surface of the distal portion of metatarsal IV. This is the first unambiguous tyrannosaurid dinosaur reported from the Mesaverde Group and represents an important biogeographic record situated between northern and southern upper Campanian vertebrate assemblages. Specifically, we identify morphological evidence on the pes that separates northern (Montana and Alberta) and southern (southern Utah and New Mexico) tyrannosaurid dinosaurs, and suggests that the Book Cliffs specimen belongs to the northern group. This implies that either the biogeographic boundary between the northern and southern Campanian assemblages lies somewhere between central and southern Utah or that the Book Cliffs taxon represents a northern emigrant in the southern assemblage.  相似文献

The UV/H2O2 is one of the popular techniques in the advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and has been applied in the wastewater treatment during recent two decades. UV exposure on the H2O2 generate highly reactive hydroxyl radicals (OH?), which are used to degrade organic contaminants through oxidation processes in wastewater. This present study involves the estimation of hydroxyl radical rate constants of methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) mineralization at different temperatures by using UV/H2O2 in aqueous solution. Laboratory experiments have been conducted and the profile of MDEA mineralization has been established. The hydroxyl radical rate constants and the activation energy of mineralization process have been calculated. The estimated hydroxyl rate constants and the activation energy are in good agreement with those reported in the literature.  相似文献

This paper presents a field investigation of aromatic volatile organic compounds (AVOCs) emissions from a sequence batch reactor (SBR) with powdered activated carbon (PAC) to treat the wastewater in a large petroleum refinery plant. AVOC with high Henry's constant preferred to transfer from liquid‐phase into air‐phase so that might cause the emission and odor problem. During SBR operation, AVOC concentrations and distributions in wastewater, sludge and off‐gas were analyzed. The total AVOC removal from wastewater was >99% under the kinetic parameters of SBR operated. Batch experiments were carried out in the laboratory to obtain the adsorptive characteristic of AVOC onto PAC, but the results showed that bio‐degradation was the main removal mechanism (85%). Nevertheless, off‐gas emission (<1%) and AVOC in the sludge (<0.1%) remained a stable level. Oxidation/reduction potential (ORP) was correlated to the logarithm of the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration in a linear relationship so that ORP profile could indirectly reflect the DO and biomass concentrations. Since the influent AVOC concentration was varied and difficultly to measure, ORP could be used as real‐time parameter for optimizing SBR operation. The results provided useful information for future evaluation of AVOC emissions from wastewater treatment plants.  相似文献

Changes of major terrestrial ecosystems in China since 1960   总被引:10,自引:1,他引:9  
Daily temperature and precipitation data since 1960 are selected from 735 weather stations that are scattered over China. After comparatively analyzing relative interpolation methods, gradient-plus-inverse distance squared (GIDS) is selected to create temperature surfaces and Kriging interpolation method is selected to create precipitation surfaces. Digital elevation model of China is combined into Holdridge Life Zone (HLZ) model on the basis of simulating relationships between temperature and elevation in different regions of China. HLZ model is operated on the created temperature and precipitation surfaces in ARC/INFO environment. Spatial pattern of major terrestrial ecosystems in China and its change in the four decades of 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s are analyzed in terms of results from operating HLZ model. The results show that HLZ spatial pattern in China has had a great change since 1960. For instance, nival area and subtropical thorn woodland had a rapid decrease on an average and they might disappear in 159 years and 96 years, respectively, if their areas would decrease at present rate. Alpine dry tundra and cool temperate scrub continuously increased in the four decades and the decadal increase rates are, respectively, 13.1% and 3.4%. HLZ patch connectivity has a continuous increase trend and HLZ diversity has a continuous decrease trend on the average. Warm temperate thorn steppe, subtropical wet forest and cool temperate wet forest shifted 1781.45 km, 1208.14 km and 977.43 km in the four decades, respectively. These HLZ types are more sensitive to climate change than other ones. These changes reflect the great effects of climate change on terrestrial ecosystems in China.  相似文献

The transition from arid glacial to moist early Holocene conditions represented a profound change in northern lowland Neotropical climate. Here we report a detailed record of changes in moisture availability during the latter part of this transition (~11 250 to 7500 cal. yr BP) inferred from sediment cores retrieved in Lake Petén Itzá, northern Guatemala. Pollen assemblages demonstrate that a mesic forest had been largely established by ~11 250 cal. yr BP, but sediment properties indicate that lake level was more than 35 m below modern stage. From 11 250 to 10 350 cal. yr BP, during the Preboreal period, lithologic changes in sediments from deep‐water cores (>50 m below modern water level) indicate several wet–dry cycles that suggest distinct changes in effective moisture. Four dry events (designated PBE1‐4) occurred centred at 11 200, 10 900, 10 700 and 10 400 cal. yr BP and correlate with similar variability observed in the Cariaco Basin titanium record and glacial meltwater pulses into the Gulf of Mexico. After 10 350 cal. yr BP, multiple sediment proxies suggest a shift to a more persistently moist early Holocene climate. Comparison of results from Lake Petén Itzá with other records from the circum‐Caribbean demonstrates a coherent climate response during the entire span of our record. Furthermore, lowland Neotropical climate during the late deglacial and early Holocene period appears to be tightly linked to climate change in the high‐latitude North Atlantic. We speculate that the observed changes in lowland Neotropical precipitation were related to the intensity of the annual cycle and associated displacements in the mean latitudinal position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone and Azores–Bermuda high‐pressure system. This mechanism operated on millennial‐to‐submillennial timescales and may have responded to changes in solar radiation, glacial meltwater, North Atlantic sea ice, and the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (MOC). The Arthur River Complex is a suite of gabbroic to dioritic orthogneisses in northern Fiordland, New Zealand. The Arthur River Complex separates rocks of the Median Tectonic Zone, a Mesozoic island arc complex, from Palaeozoic rocks of the palaeo‐Pacific Gondwana margin, and is itself intruded by the Western Fiordland Orthogneiss. New SHRIMP U/Pb single zircon data are presented for magmatic, metamorphic and deformation events in the Arthur River Complex and adjacent rocks from northern Fiordland. The Arthur River Complex orthogneisses and dykes are dominated by magmatic zircon dated at 136–129 Ma. A dioritic orthogneiss that occurs along the eastern margin of the Complex is dated at 154.4 ± 3.6 Ma and predates adjacent plutons of the Median Tectonic Zone. Rims on zircon cores from this sample record a thermal event at c. 120 Ma, attributed to the emplacement of the Western Fiordland Orthogneiss. Migmatitic Palaeozoic orthogneiss from the Arthur River Complex (346 ± 6 Ma) is interpreted as deformed wall rock. Very fine rims (5–20 µm) also indicate a metamorphic age of c. 120–110 Ma. A post‐tectonic pegmatite (81.8 ± 1.8 Ma) may be related to phases of crustal extension associated with the opening of the Tasman Sea. The Arthur River Complex is interpreted as a batholith, emplaced at mid‐crustal levels and then buried to deep crustal levels due to convergence of the Median Tectonic Zone arc and the continental margin.  相似文献

The stress conditions of the ductile-to-brittle regime have been assessed along the Asuke Shear Zone (ASZ), which strikes NE–SW in the Cretaceous Ryoke granite terrain in SW Japan. Along the ASZ, pseudotachylyte and mylonitized pseudotachylyte are locally developed together with cataclasite. The simultaneous operation of dislocation creep and grain-size-sensitive creep, as indicated by the coexistence of the Z-maximum and relatively random c-axis lattice preferred orientations as well as the sizes of dynamically recrystallized quartz grains (6.40–7.79 μm) in the mylonitized pseudotachylyte, suggest differential stresses of 110–130 MPa at ∼300 °C. The e-twin morphology, twinning ratio, and distribution of the glide direction on the e-twin plane of the twinned calcite in the amygdules of the pseudotachylyte suggest the stress conditions of the σ1 and σ3 axes trend 228° and 320° and plunge 55° and 1°, respectively, and indicate differential stresses of 40–80 MPa at 150–200 °C. Based on kinematic indicators in the fault rocks, the stress conditions estimated from calcite twins, and the cooling history of the granitic protolith, the ASZ is inferred to have been activated under a stress state that caused sinistral normal movements before and after pseudotachylyte formation at 70–50 Ma.  相似文献

The ~E–W-trending Olepoloko Fault and ~ENE-trending Louth-Eumarra Shear Zone in north-central New South Wales are approximately orthogonal to the dominant ~N–S-trending structural grain of Paleozoic eastern Australia. These structures have been interpreted to represent the boundary between the Thomson and Lachlan orogens, but their exact geometry and kinematics remain unclear owing to the scarcity of surface exposure. Using gridded aeromagnetic data and limited field mapping, we obtained new data on the tectonic history of the Louth-Eumarra Shear Zone, which seems to represent a broad zone of dextral shearing with a component of crustal thickening indicated by the recognition of kyanite growth in a mica-schist. The timing of deformation is relatively poorly constrained, but at least a component of the dextral shearing appears to be coeval or younger than the age of displaced late Silurian and Early Devonian granitoids. Additional indicators for dextral kinematics farther north, along the ~ENE-trending Culgoa Fault, suggest that the width of the zone that was subjected to dextral deformation is possibly >100 km. This raises the possibility that a large component of dextral displacement was accommodated in this region. In a broader geodynamic context, we discuss the possibility that the precursor of the Louth-Eumarra Shear Zone and Olepoloko Fault originated from segmentation between the northern and southern Tasmanides, perhaps during the Cambrian. The existence of such a discontinuity may have buttressed the process of oroclinal bending in the Silurian. The observed dextral kinematics has possibly resulted from reactivated deformation during the Tabberabberan and Alice Springs orogenies.  相似文献
