Ozone is an important observable tracer of martian photochemistry, including odd hydrogen (HOx) species important to the chemistry and stability of the martian atmosphere. Infrared heterodyne spectroscopy with spectral resolution ?106 provides the only ground-based direct access to ozone absorption features in the martian atmosphere. Ozone abundances were measured with the Goddard Infrared Heterodyne Spectrometer and the Heterodyne Instrument for Planetary Wind and Composition at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility on Mauna Kea, Hawai'i. Retrieved total ozone column abundances from various latitudes and orbital positions (LS=40°, 74°, 102°, 115°, 202°, 208°, 291°) are compared to those predicted by the first three-dimensional gas phase photochemical model of the martian atmosphere [Lefèvre, F., Lebonnois, S., Montmessin, F., Forget, F., 2004. J. Geophys. Res. 109, doi:10.1029/2004JE002268. E07004]. Observed and modeled ozone abundances show good agreement at all latitudes at perihelion orbital positions (LS=202°, 208°, 291°). Observed low-latitude ozone abundances are significantly higher than those predicted by the model at aphelion orbital positions (LS=40°, 74°, 115°). Heterogeneous loss of odd hydrogen onto water ice cloud particles would explain the discrepancy, as clouds are observed at low latitudes around aphelion on Mars.  相似文献

Nearly all adaptive optics images of Titan taken between December 2001 and November 2004 showed tropospheric clouds located within 30° of the south pole. We report here on a dissipation of Titan's south polar clouds observed in twenty-nine Keck and Gemini images taken between December 2004 and April 2005. The near complete lack of south polar cloud activity during this time, and subsequent resurgence months later at generally higher latitudes, may be the beginning of seasonal change in Titan's weather. The ∼5 month decrease in cloud activity may also have been caused by methane rainout from a large cloud event in October 2004. Understanding the seasonal evolution of Titan's clouds, and of any precipitation associated with them, is essential for interpreting the geological observations of fluid flow features observed over a wide range of Titan latitudes with the Cassini/Huygens spacecraft.  相似文献

Disk-resolved reflectance spectra of the surface of Mercury (longitudes 240-300°), obtained in the visual (vis) and near-infrared (NIR) spectral region, are presented and analyzed. The observations were made at the 2.6-m Nordic Optical Telescope with the ALFOSC low-resolution spectrograph on 20 and 22 June 1999 in the wavelength range 520-970 nm with a footprint size of 700 km on the mid-disk of Mercury. A method which enables more accurate correction for telluric line absorptions and atmospheric extinction than that applied on previously published vis-NIR spectra of Mercury is introduced. The resulting reflectance spectra are remarkably linear, lack significant absorption features, and have optical slopes comparable to remotely sensed lunar pure anorthosites. The relation between spectral slope and photometric geometry found by Warell (2002, Icarus 156, 313-317) is confirmed and is explained as caused by strongly backscattering particles with embedded submicroscopic metallic iron in a mature regolith. With the theoretical maturation model of Hapke (2001, J. Geophys. Res. 106 (E5), 10039-10073) an abundance of 0.05-0.3 wt% submicroscopic metallic iron in the regolith for silicate grain sizes in the range 10-80 μm is determined, implying a ferrous iron content in mafic minerals intrinsically lower than that of the lunar highlands. A binary crustal composition model with anorthite linearly mixed with pyroxene provides better spectral fits than a pure anorthitic composition. Comparison with mature lunar pure anorthosite spectra yields a confident upper limit to the FeO content of 3 wt% under the assumption that the surfaces are similarly matured, but this figure probably represents a considerable overestimate. The average mercurian regolith does not seem to be substantially more weathered than the most mature lunar highland soils in terms of abundance of submicroscopic metallic iron, indicating that a steady-state maturation level has been reached. However, the strong relation between optical spectral slope and photometric geometry may imply that the majority of regolith particles are more fine-grained than their lunar counterparts and that the regolith is admixed with complex agglutinate weathering products which are more abundant and more transparent than those of the lunar highlands. This is consistent with more energetic impacts and a higher rate of impact melt production in an iron-poor regolith. An observed relation between the spectral slope and latitude provides evidence that the Ostwald ripening process may be operating at equatorial latitudes on Mercury.  相似文献

Mars is the only terrestrial planet known to have co-orbiting “Trojan” asteroids. We have obtained visible and near-IR reflectance spectra of three of these objects: 5261 Eureka and 1998 VF31 in the L5 region and 1999 UJ7 in the L4 region. We also obtained JHK spectrophotometry and a visible lightcurve for 5261 Eureka. The asteroid 5261 Eureka has a visible spectrum that is classified as Sr in the Bus taxonomy, and has infrared colors consistent with the A-class asteroids. The data for 1998 VF31 have a restricted wavelength range, but are most consistent with the Sr or Sa class, though we note a marginal consistency with the D class. We can rule out a C-class classification. 1999 UJ7 has an X-class or T-class spectrum, which is unlike that of the other two Mars Trojans. The photometric data for Eureka are limited, but we can constrain the period to longer than 5 hours (likely 5.5-6 hours) and lightcurve amplitude of at least 0.15 magnitude at this viewing geometry. The spectral differences among the Mars Trojans suggests that either they did not all form at their present solar distances or that they have not always been at their present sizes.  相似文献

Abstract. Silicate grains in space have attracted recently a wide interest of astrophysicists due to the increasing amount and quality of observational data, especially thanks to the results obtained by the Infrared Space Observatory. The observations have shown that the presence of silicates is ubiquitous in space and that their properties vary with environmental characteristics. Silicates, together with carbon, are the principal components of solid matter in space. Since their formation, silicate grains cross many environments characterised by different physical and chemical conditions which can induce changes to their nature. Moreover, the transformations experienced in the interplay of silicate grains and the medium where they are dipped, are part of a series of processes which are the subject of possible changes in the nature of the space environment itself. Then, chemical and physical changes of silicate grains during their life play a key role in the chemical evolution of the entire Galaxy. The knowledge of silicate properties related to the conditions where they are found in space is strictly related to the study in the laboratory of the possible formation and transformation mechanisms they experience. The application of production and processing methods, capable to reproduce actual space conditions, together with the use of analytical techniques to investigate the nature of the material samples, form a subject of a complex laboratory experimental approach directed to the understanding of cosmic matter. The goal of the present paper is to review the experimental methods applied in various laboratories to the simulation and characterisation of cosmic silicate analogues. The paper describes also laboratory studies of the chemical reactions undergone and induced by silicate grains. The comparison of available laboratory results with observational data shows the essential constraints imposed by astronomical observations and, at the same time, indicates the most puzzling problems that deserve particular attention for the future. The outstanding open problems are reported and discussed. The final purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the present stage of knowledge about silicates in space and to provide to the reader some indication of the future developments in the field. This paper presents the first detailed analysis of acetylene absorption features observed longward of 190.0 nm in a jovian spectrum by the Faint Object Spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope. The presence of two features located near 207.0 nm can only be explained by a substantial abundance of acetylene in the upper troposphere. Using a Rayleigh-Raman radiative transfer model, it was determined that the acetylene vertical profile is characterized by a decrease in the mole fraction with increasing pressure in the upper stratosphere, a minimum around 14 to 29 mbar, followed by an increase to about 1.5 × 10−7 in the upper troposphere. Longward of 220 nm, the relatively high contrast of Raman features to the continuum precludes the existence of an optically significant amount of clouds from 150 to 500 mbar unless they are highly reflective. Instead, the reflectivity at these long wavelengths is determined by stratospheric, not tropospheric, scatterers and absorbers. Analysis of the data also suggests that ammonia is extremely undersaturated at pressures below 700 mbar. However, no firm conclusions can be reached because of the uncertainties surrounding its cross section longward of 217.0 nm, which are due to vibrationally excited states.  相似文献

We report on observations of Neptune from the 10-meter W.M. Keck II Telescope on June 17-18 (UT) 2000 and August 2-3 (UT) 2002 using the adaptive optics (AO) system to obtain a spatial resolution of 0.06 arcseconds. With this spatial resolution we can obtain spectra of individual bright features on the disk of Neptune in a filter centered near 2 microns. The use of a gas-only, simple reflecting layer radiative transfer model allows us to estimate the best fit altitudes of 18 bright features seen on these 4 nights and to set a constraint on the fraction of hydrogen in ortho/para equilibrium. On these nights there were three main types of features observed: northern hemisphere features in the range from +30 to −45 degrees; southern hemisphere features in the range from −30 to −50 degrees; and small southern features at −70 degrees. We find that the altitudes of the northern features are in the range from 0.023-0.064 bar, which places them in Neptune's stratosphere. Southern features at −30 to −50 degrees are mainly at altitudes from 0.10 to 0.14 bars. The small features at −70 degrees are somewhat deeper in the upper troposphere, at 0.17 and 0.27 bars. This pattern of features located at higher altitudes in the northern hemisphere and lower altitudes in the south has also been noted by previous observers. The best fits for all the observed spectra give a value of 1.0 for the fraction of hydrogen in ortho/para equilibrium; the value of the helium fraction is less well constrained by the data at 0.24. We suggest that the southern mid-latitude features are methane haze circulated up from below, while the −70° features may be isolated areas of upwelling in a general area of subsidence. Northern bright features may be due to subsidence of stratospheric haze material rather than upwelling and condensation of methane gas. We suggest that convection efficiently transports methane ice clouds to the tropopause in the Southern mid latitudes and thus plays a key role in the stratospheric haze production cycle.  相似文献

During the Leonid meteor shower on 18 November 1999, the five spectrographic imagers onboard the Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX) satellite recorded the first complete meteor spectra from 110 to 860 nm. The observation occurred at 00:23:36.2 UT, at which time the satellite was pointed at a tangent altitude of 100 km over 37.2°N and 78.2°E. The spectrograph slits were oriented approximately parallel to the horizon at a tangent altitude of 100 km, and the meteor passed approximately perpendicular through the slits’ fields of view. All five spectrographic imagers observed the passage of a bright object (mv < −2.8 at 100 km) and each recorded several frames of data. In the visible, common meteor emissions were observed from iron, sodium, and oxygen. However, the ultraviolet spectrum displayed a wealth of more intense features, some of which actually caused saturation in the spectrographs. The most intense features appeared between 220 and 300 nm and are attributed to neutral and singly ionized iron and ionized magnesium. Some unknown emissions, possibly from an unidentified molecular species such as iron oxide, appear between 180 and 220 nm. In the far ultraviolet from 110 to 130 nm, oxygen and nitrogen features appear in the spectrum, with some features from ionized iron and magnesium. In particular, the FUV spectrum showed an intense emission from hydrogen Lyman alpha and a much weaker emission from what appeared to be neutral carbon. The atmospheric emissions can be associated with the heating within the meteor shock, while the metallic emissions originate from the fireball of the meteor proper. The ultraviolet emissions were much stronger than those in the visible and near-infrared parts of the spectrum. The energy of emissions in the ultraviolet (110 < λ < 337 nm) exceeded the energy of the visible (337 < λ < 650 nm) by a factor of at least 5.  相似文献

The O2 dayglow at 1.27 μm is formed by high-altitude ozone on Mars and is a sensitive tracer of Mars photochemistry. Mapping of this dayglow using the IRTF/CSHELL long-slit spectrograph requires the extraction of weak emission lines against a strong continuum of the reflected solar light. Some new tools are suggested to improve the data processing. The observed O2 dayglow intensities at LS=67°, 112°, 148°, and 173° show a decrease from late spring (aphelion) to fall equinox by a factor of ≈5 at low latitudes (±30°). This decrease agrees with that predicted by a model of Clancy and Nair (1996, J. Geophys. Res. 101 (12) 12785-12790), although the dayglow intensities are weaker than those based on that model. The measured dayglow variations with latitude are rather low at LS=67°, 112°, and 148° and unexpectedly high at 173°. The dayglow intensity peaks near noon and is smaller at 9:00 and 16:30 LT by a factor of 2. Some data on the ozone profile near aphelion are obtained from a combination of the dayglow and ozone observations. It is hardly possible to detect the O2 night airglow at 1.27 μm on Mars using the existing ground-based and on-orbit instruments. The O2 dayglow intensity as a function of latitude and season from aphelion to fall equinox has been obtained. Our goal is to extend this distribution to the full martian year and get a database for Mars photochemistry to complement the MGS/TES observations of water vapor, atmospheric temperature, and dust and ice aerosol.  相似文献

We detected CH4 in eight Oort cloud comets using high-dispersion (λλ∼2×104) infrared spectra acquired with CSHELL at NASA's IRTF and NIRSPEC at the W.M. Keck Observatory. The observed comets were C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp), C/1996 B2 (Hyakutake), C/1999 H1 (Lee), C/1999 T1 (McNaught-Hartley), C/1999 S4 (LINEAR), C/2000 WM1 (LINEAR), C/2001 A2 (LINEAR), and 153/P Ikeya-Zhang (C/2002 C1). We detected the R0 and R1 lines of the ν3 vibrational band of CH4 near 3.3 μm in each comet, with the exception of McNaught-Hartley where only the R0 line was measured. In order to obtain production rates, a fluorescence model has been developed for this band of CH4. We report g-factors for the R0 and R1 transitions at several rotational temperatures typically found in comet comae and relevant to our observations. Using g-factors appropriate to Trot as determined from HCN, CO and/or H2O and C2H6, CH4 production rates and mixing ratios are presented. Abundances of CH4/H2O are compared among our existing sample of comets, in the context of establishing their place of origin. In addition, CH4 is compared to native CO, another hypervolatile species, and no correlation is found among the comets observed.  相似文献
