An important detachment is described in the allochthonous Ordenes Complex, in the NW Iberian Massif, and its meaning is related
to the kinematics of contemporaneous convergent structures. The Corredoiras Detachment (CD) separates a hangingwall unit,
characterised by a medium-pressure metamorphic gradient, from a footwall high-pressure and high-temperature unit and an underlying
ophiolitic unit. An associated ductile shear zone, nearly 2000 m thick, developed in the lower part of the hangingwall unit,
where the Corredoiras Orthogneiss, a Lower Ordovician metagranite, was progressively transformed into augengneisses, mylonitic
and ultramylonitic gneisses. The attitude of the stretching and mineral lineation in the mylonites varies due to late refolding
at map scale, but the sense of movement can be estimated, being roughly top to the SE. According to crosscutting relationships,
the CD developed subsequent to the thrusting of the high-pressure/high-temperature unit onto the ophiolitic unit, and prior
to younger extensional detachments, upright folding and strike-slip tectonics. The geometric relationships of the CD with
the previous structures in the footwall unit, the subtractive character of the metamorphic gap between its hangingwall and
footwall, and the available isotopic data suggest that the CD is an early Variscan, ductile extensional detachment, the movement
of which was roughly simultaneous with the onset of thrusting of the allochthonous complexes over their relative autochthon.

Field and laboratory structural studies show that the Devonian–Dinantian units of the northeast French Massif Central experienced
a complex and contrasting tectonic–metamorphic evolution during the Hercynian orogeny. The structural analysis of the pre-Middle
Visean Brévenne–Violay–Beaujolais rocks, in the Loire area, shows a polyphase tectonic evolution associated with greenschist
to amphibolite facies metamorphism. The first event, D1, probably occurred in Early Tournaisian or Latest Devonian times.
It is responsible for the flat-lying regional foliation and the NW/SE- to N/S-trending lineation. It is well observed in the
Violay group and corresponds to the NW-vergent emplacement of the Late Devonian units upon their gneissic basement, represented
by the Affoux gneisses. The second event, D2, is responsible for the NE/SW- to E/W-trending lineation. To the south, D2 deformation
is locally reworked by the Grand-Chemin dextral wrench fault, around 345–350 Ma ago. This polyphase deformation is also found
in several Devonian–Dinantian areas of the NE Massif Central, but not in Morvan. This tectonics corresponds to the Tournaisian
closure, by northward thrusting and subsequent intracontinental deformation, of the oceanic Brévenne–Violay–Beaujolais rift
which opened in Devonian times in a back-arc setting.

In Alpine Corsica, the Jurassic ophiolites represent remnants of oceanic lithosphere belonging to the Ligure‐Piemontese Basin located between the Europe/Corsica and Adria continental margins. In the Balagne area, a Jurassic ophiolitic sequence topped by a Late Jurassic–Late Cretaceous sedimentary cover crops out at the top of the nappe pile. The whole ophiolitic succession is affected by polyphase deformation developed under very low‐grade orogenic metamorphic conditions. The original palaeogeographic location and the emplacement mechanisms for the Balagne ophiolites are still a matter of debate and different interpretations for its history have been proposed. The deformation features of the Balagne ophiolites are outlined in order to provide constraints on their history in the framework of the geodynamic evolution of Alpine Corsica. The deformation history reconstructed for the Balagne Nappe includes five different deformation phases, from D1 to D5. The D1 phase was connected with the latest Cretaceous/Palaeocene accretion into the accretionary wedge related to an east‐dipping subduction zone followed by a Late Eocene D2 phase related to emplacement onto the Europe/Corsica continental margin. The subsequent D3 phase was characterized by sinistral strike‐slip faults and related deformations of Late Eocene–Early Oligocene age.
