Sediment, nutrients and pollutants discharged from sheet and interrill erosion areas by rain‐impacted flows may influence water quality in streams and rivers. The depth of water on the soil surface influences the capacity of raindrop impacts to detach soil material underlying rain‐impacted flows, and a number of so‐called process‐based and mechanistic models erroneously use equations on the basis of the effect of water depth on splash erosion to account for this effect. Also, a number of these models require complex mathematical solutions to make them operate and can only predict sediment composition and discharges well if many of their parameters are calibrated specifically to the situations where they are being applied. Experiments with rain‐impacted flows, where flow depth and velocity over eroding surfaces have been controlled, have been reported in the literature and provide more appropriate equations to account for the drop size – flow depth interactions that affect detachment and transport of particles in rain‐impacted flows. There is a need to develop modeling approaches that rely on relevant data obtained under well‐controlled flow conditions where flow depths and velocities are known. The presence of large ice sheets over North America and North Europe at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) strongly impacted Northern
hemisphere river pathways. Despite the fact that such changes may significantly alter the freshwater input to the ocean, modified
surface hydrology has never been accounted for in coupled ocean–atmosphere general circulation model simulations of the LGM
climate. To reconstruct the LGM river routing, we use the ICE-5G LGM topography. Because of the uncertainties in the extent
of the Fennoscandian ice sheet in the Eastern part of the Kara Sea, we consider two more realistic river routing scenarios.
The first scenario is characterised by the presence of an ice dammed lake south of the Fennoscandian ice sheet, and corresponds
to the ICE-5G topography. This lake is fed by the Ob and Yenisei rivers. In the second scenario, both these rivers flow directly
into the Arctic Ocean, which is more consistent with the latest QUEEN ice sheet margin reconstructions. We study the impact
of these changes on the LGM climate as simulated by the IPSL_CM4 model and focus on the overturning thermohaline circulation.
A comparison with a classical LGM simulation performed using the same model and modern river basins as designed in the PMIP2
exercise leads to the following conclusions: (1) The discharge into the North Atlantic Ocean is increased by 2,000 m3/s between 38° and 54°N in both simulations that contain LGM river routing, compared to the classical LGM experiment. (2)
The ice dammed lake is shown to have a weak impact, relative to the classical simulation, both in terms of climate and ocean
circulation. (3) In contrast, the North Atlantic deep convection and meridional overturning are weaker than during the classical
LGM run if the Ob and Yenisei rivers flow directly into the Arctic Ocean. The total discharge into the Arctic Ocean is increased
by 31,000 m3/s, relative to the classical LGM simulation. Consequentially, northward ocean heat transport is weaker, and sea ice more
extensive, in better agreement with existing proxy data. 相似文献

Soft-sediment clasts composed of silt and clay are contained within glacial outwash sands in the Puget Sound, Washington State, USA. The outwash was deposited during ice retreat of the Cordilleran ice sheet around 17 cal kyr BP. The soft-sediment clasts have a distinctive and consistent morphology and disposition within the sand beds. The sedimentology, sedimentary structures and presence of soft-sediment clasts suggest sand was deposited as proglacial outwash with silts and clays deposited in meltwater pools. Following drying-out of the pools and subaerial cracking, lumps of silt and clay were excavated by meltwater and transported distally as soft-sediment clasts within high-density flows. The most likely final depositional setting is as a Salisbury-type ‘delta’ in which subaqueous outwash grades distally into deeper water. This interpretation shows the power of soft-sediment clasts to inform on past processes and palaeogeography for which there is often little evidence in the geologic record. 相似文献

Fan deltas are excellent recorders of fan‐building processes because of their high sedimentation rate, particularly in tectonically active settings. Although previous research focuses mainly on allogenic controls, there is clear evidence for autogenically produced storage and release of sediment by flume and numerical modelling that demands further definition of characteristics and significance of autogenically forced facies and stratigraphy. Analogue experiments were performed on fan deltas with constant extrinsic variables (discharge, sediment supply, sea‐level and basin relief) to demonstrate that fan‐delta evolution consists of prominent cyclic alternations of channellized flow and sheet flow. The channellized flow is initiated by slope‐induced scouring and subsequent headward erosion to form a channel that connected with the valley, while the removed sediment is deposited in a rapidly prograding delta lobe. The resulting decrease in channel gradient causes a reduction in flow strength, mouth‐bar formation, flow bifurcation and progressive backfilling of the channel. In the final stage of channel filling, sheet flow coexists for a while with channellized flow (semi‐confined flow), although in cycle 1 this phase of semi‐confined flow was absent. Subsequent autocyclic incisions are very similar in morphology and gradient. However, they erode deeper into the delta plain and, as a result, take more time to backfill. The duration of the semi‐confined flow increases with each subsequent cycle. During the period of sheet flow, the delta plain aggrades up to the ‘critical’ gradient required for the initiation of autocyclic incision. This critical gradient is dependent on the sediment transport capacity, defined by the input conditions. These autogenic cycles of erosion and aggradation confirm earlier findings that storage and release of sediment and associated slope variation play an important role in fan‐delta evolution. The erosional surfaces produced by the autocyclic incisions are well‐preserved by the backfilling process in the deposits of the fan deltas. These erosional surfaces can easily be misinterpreted as climate, sea‐level or tectonically produced bounding surfaces. 相似文献

地下工程中破碎岩体往往处于三向应力状态,此类岩体具有孔隙率大、渗透性高等特点,在地应力与高水头作用下易发生渗流失稳破坏,诱发突水灾害。为研究三轴应力下破碎砂岩的渗透特性,运用自主研发的破碎岩石三轴渗流试验系统,采用稳态渗透法进行5种粒径破碎砂岩的渗流试验,得到了三轴应力下破碎砂岩渗透特性变化规律,推导了有效应力与渗流速度之间的关系。试验结果表明:三轴应力下破碎砂岩的有效应力与渗流速度呈线性关系,且轴向位移越大时,随有效应力的增加渗流速度减小的幅度越小;三轴应力下5种粒径破碎砂岩的孔压梯度与渗流速度服从Forchheimer关系,两者之间的相关系数达0.95以上;轴向位移恒定时,随着围压的增大,破碎砂岩渗透率k减小,非Darcy流β因子增大,各级轴向位移下,破碎砂岩的渗透率与围压之间呈指数函数关系;随着孔隙率的减小,5种粒径的破碎砂岩渗透率呈减小趋势,非Darcy流β因子整体增大,且渗透率量级为10-14~10-11 m2,非Darcy流β因子的量级为106~1012 m-1。 相似文献
