Following our hypothesis that each supernova (SN) event triggers star formation in the swept-up gas, so that newly formed
stars inherit the elemental abundance pattern of individual SNe, we deduce the production sites and yields for r-process elements. We further show that a strong evidence for the origin of r-process nucleosynthesis products was just there in our backyard - supernova SN1987A -, and conclude that 20 M
⊙ SNe are the predominant production sites for r-process elements.

We have observed emission from the nucleus of the closest radio galaxy, Centaurus A, from the radio to the gamma-ray band. We construct, for the first time, its overall spectral energy distribution (SED) which appears to be intriguingly similar to those of blazars, showing two broad peaks located in the far-infrared band and at ∼0.1 MeV respectively. The whole nuclear emission of Centaurus A is successfully reproduced with a synchrotron self-Compton model. The estimated physical parameters of the emitting source are similar to those of BL Lacs, except for a much smaller beaming factor, as qualitatively expected when a relativistic jet is orientated at a large angle to the line of sight. These results represent strong evidence that Centaurus A is indeed a misoriented BL Lac, and provide strong support in favour of the unification scheme for low-luminosity radio-loud active galactic nuclei. Modelling of the SED of Centaurus A also provides further and independent indications of the presence of velocity structures in sub-parsec-scale jets. 相似文献

During the descent of the Huygens probe through Titan's atmosphere in January 2005, the Descent Imager/Spectral Radiometer (DISR) will perform upward and downward looking measurements at various spectral ranges and spatial resolutions. This internal radiation density could be estimated by radiative transfer calculations for Titan's atmosphere. However, to do this, the optical properties—i.e. volume extinction coefficient, single scattering albedo and scattering phase function—have to be prescribed at every altitude, and these are apriori not known. Herein, an inverse approach is investigated, which retrieves the single scattering albedo and the phase function of the aerosols from DISR observations. The method uses data from a DISR subinstrument, the Solar Aureole imager (SA), to estimate the optical properties of the atmospheric layer between two successive observation altitudes. A unique solution for one layer can in principle be calculated directly from a linear system of equations, but due to the sparseness of the data and the unavoidable noise in the measurements, the inverse problem is ill-posed. The problem is stabilized by the regularization method requiring smoothness of the resultant solution. A consistent set of solutions for all layers is obtained by iterating several times downward and upward through the layers. The method is tested in a simulated radiation density scenario for Titan, which is based on a microphysical aerosol model for the haze layer. Within this scenario, the expected coverage of SA data allows a reconstruction of the angular dependence of the scattering phase function with an explained variance better than 90%. 相似文献

The optical (BV) monitoring data for the Seyfert galaxies NGC 4051 and NGC 1068 are presented in this paper. NGC 4051 showed a variation of 0.43 mag in 21 minutes in B band from its bright nucleus, and the nucleus of NGC 1068 exhibited a variability of 0.46 mag in B band in a timescale of 1.8 hours. These results argued that the optical emission from the nuclei of the two Seyfert galaxies could be dominated by the nonthermal radiation. The data in this paper, however, are only marginal evidence on the rapid optical variability of these two Seyferts, and further monitoring is needed to confirm this type of variability. 相似文献
