A constraint to the Wisconsinan glacial history,Canadian Arctic Archipelago

Thick ice-bearing permafrost is not observed today beneath the deeper channels of the central Queen Elizabeth Islands, Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Analysis of a precision temperature log recently obtained at an offshore well near Ellef Ringnes Island indicates that the thermal regime beneath the seabed is in equilibrium with today's marine environment. If thick permafrost similar to that observed on land today had existed in the Pleistocene in areas that are presently offshore, then such permafrost must have started melting no later than 25000 years ago in order to allow the present thermal regime to evolve. This suggests that the inter-island channels must have been water-filled at least by that date.     

ENHANCING AND USING A SENSE OF PLACE WITHIN URBAN AREAS: A ROLE FOR APPLIED CULTURAL GEOGRAPHY

Basic concepts of cultural historical geography have been applied to a variety of community issues in St. Paul, MN. Through the process a sense of place has been developed at several scales. This inclusive sense of place has provided a link among various factions and made possible several compromises in land use and economic development issues. Most of the work was done through undergraduate field seminars.

Porothermoelastic analyses of anisotropic hollow cylinders with applications

It has been known that material anisotropy and thermal stresses affect borehole stability significantly. Aiming at the experimental studies associated with borehole stability in anisotropic (transversely isotropic) poroelastic materials subject to non‐isothermal conditions, this paper details and applies an anisotropic porothermoelastic solution to an unjacketed hollow cylinder in a triaxial set‐up. Numerical analyses are presented to demonstrate thermal and material anisotropy effects on the pore pressure and the stress concentrations in and around the geometry of a hollow cylinder subjected to thermal and stress perturbations. 地幔载流子热传导机制初步研究

本文采用Fermi量子统计方法,对地幔电导率和载流子热传导机制问题进行了理论上的探讨。讨论结果表明,在过渡带和下地幔中,以往被忽视的载流子热导将成为热传递的主要机制.此外,本文还指出在高温高压下活化能A对地幔电导率变化速率有重要影响。     

Geomorphological and Pedological Investigations on the Glacial History of the Kali Gandaki (Nepal Himalaya)

In semi-arid orographic left tributaries of the Kali Gandaki at the northern and western flank of the Nilgiri Himal, glacio-geomorphological and pedological investigations were carried out on prehistoric moraines. Geomorphological relief analysis was derived from other literature and the own fieldwork of the author. The resulting glacial chronology was used as benchmark to explore the limits of different pedological dating methods regarding the degree of soil development. These methods are based on iron fractionation, total element contents and particle size distribution. In general the different glacial stages are mirrored correctly in the relative graduation of soil development. The ratio of well crystallised pedogenic iron-oxides to the total iron content and the ratio fine clay to total clay are most suitable, because they are almost independent from existing changes in the lithological composition. The total element based weathering indices are less suitable, because they react highly sensitive to the geology dependent shift to higher carbonate contents. Most of the grain size based weathering indices are inapplicable because of the typically high textural variability within till deposits.     

Comptonization in the vicinity of the black hole horizon

Using a Monte Carlo method, we derive spectra arising from Comptonization taking place close to a Kerr black hole. We consider a model consisting of a hot thermal corona Comptonizing seed photons emitted by a cold accretion disc. We find that general relativistic effects are crucial for the emerging spectra in models, which involve significant contribution of radiation produced in the black hole ergosphere. As a result of this contribution, spectra of hard X-ray emission produced in the vicinity of a rapidly rotating black hole strongly depend on the inclination of the line of sight, with larger inclinations corresponding to harder spectra. Remarkably, such anisotropy could be responsible for properties of the X-ray spectra of Seyfert galaxies, which appear to be intrinsically harder in type 2 objects than in type 1, as reported recently.
