Volcanic lightning, perhaps the most spectacular consequence of the electrification of volcanic plumes, has been implicated in the origin of life on Earth, and may also exist in other planetary atmospheres. Recent years have seen volcanic lightning detection used as part of a portfolio of developing techniques to monitor volcanic eruptions. Remote sensing measurement techniques have been used to monitor volcanic lightning, but surface observations of the atmospheric electric Potential Gradient (PG) and the charge carried on volcanic ash also show that many volcanic plumes, whilst not sufficiently electrified to produce lightning, have detectable electrification exceeding that of their surrounding environment. Electrification has only been observed associated with ash-rich explosive plumes, but there is little evidence that the composition of the ash is critical to its occurrence. Different conceptual theories for charge generation and separation in volcanic plumes have been developed to explain the disparate observations obtained, but the ash fragmentation mechanism appears to be a key parameter. It is unclear which mechanisms or combinations of electrification mechanisms dominate in different circumstances. Electrostatic forces play an important role in modulating the dry fall-out of ash from a volcanic plume. Beyond the local electrification of plumes, the higher stratospheric particle concentrations following a large explosive eruption may affect the global atmospheric electrical circuit. It is possible that this might present another, if minor, way by which large volcanic eruptions affect global climate. The direct hazard of volcanic lightning to communities is generally low compared to other aspects of volcanic activity. 相似文献

Atmospheric electrification is not a purely terrestrial phenomenon: all Solar System planetary atmospheres become slightly
electrified by cosmic ray ionisation. There is evidence for lightning on Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, and it is possible
on Mars, Venus and Titan. Controversy surrounds the role of atmospheric electricity in physical climate processes on Earth;
here, a comparative approach is employed to review the role of electrification in the atmospheres of other planets and their
moons. This paper reviews the theory, and, where available, measurements, of planetary atmospheric electricity which is taken
to include ion production and ion–aerosol interactions. The conditions necessary for a planetary atmospheric electric circuit
similar to Earth’s, and the likelihood of meeting these conditions in other planetary atmospheres, are briefly discussed.
Atmospheric electrification could be important throughout the solar system, particularly at the outer planets which receive
little solar radiation, increasing the relative significance of electrical forces. Nucleation onto atmospheric ions has been
predicted to affect the evolution and lifetime of haze layers on Titan, Neptune and Triton. Atmospheric electrical processes
on Titan, before the arrival of the Huygens probe, are summarised. For planets closer to Earth, heating from solar radiation
dominates atmospheric circulations. However, Mars may have a global circuit analogous to the terrestrial model, but based
on electrical discharges from dust storms. There is an increasing need for direct measurements of planetary atmospheric electrification,
in particular on Mars, to assess the risk for future unmanned and manned missions. Theoretical understanding could be increased
by cross-disciplinary work to modify and update models and parameterisations initially developed for a specific atmosphere,

The use of satellite positioning techniques commonly requires a transformation from a Conventional Terrestrial coordinate
system to a Geodetic coordinate system, or vice versa. For such a transformation, the main problem is the determination of
transformation parameters between these coordinate systems. The transformation parameters are estimated by a least-squares
process using “common” points, i.e., those points whose coordinates are known in both systems. Therefore, the precision of
so estimated transformation parameters is closely related to certain characteristics of the common points. In this contribution,
we have formulated some theoretical relations between the transformation parameters and the number and the distribution of

Measurements of atmospheric electrical and meteorological parameters during different meteorological conditions indicate that the use of the conception Fair weather condition in atmospheric electricity is discussable. Fair weather contains a very broad stability range, from very unstable to strong stable stability of the atmosphere. For turbulent fluctuations of the electric parameters (the most local variations) the variations are determined by the micrometeorological processes for all stability conditions.These fluctuations represent frequencies greater than one period per four minutes. For lower frequencies (less local variations), however, the stability dependency increases. During stable conditions the electric field and vertical current density were nearly wholly influenced by the charges and their transfer in the nearest layer. During near-neutral and unstable conditions the electrical parameters were influenced by more separated sources. Measurements of how well Ohm's law was fulfilled also indicate the difficulties by using the conception fair weather. The measurements also indicate the importance of taking the convection current density into consideration in studies of the electric charge transfer in the atmosphere.In the more large scale of variations measurements of the electric field by radiosoundings show that 88% of the ionospheric potential is derived from the troposphere, where the meteorological processes are of fundamental character for the atmospheric electrical phenomena. The relatively great stability of the diurnal variation of the large scale or global electric field is also valid for the meteorological processes in this scale of variations. 相似文献

The characteristics of rain and point charges based on routine measurements extending over four rainy seasons are presented. An average rain current density of (1.0±0.1)×10–10 A m–2 and charge per unit volume of rain water of (0.43±0.02)×10–4 C m–3 for the locality are obtained, which are compared with data obtained elsewhere by other workers. The point-discharge current measurements lead to a revised estimate of (0.86±0.08)×10–9 A m–2 for the average point discharge current below storm clouds. 相似文献

In the present study the influence of smoke and sulfur dioxide concentrations and of wind velocity on the concentration of small positive and negative ions above Athens area (=37°58.3N, =23°43E,h=107 m) is examined.Between the above mentioned elements simple linear correlation and multiple linear correlation is attempted. This correlation is based on mean daily values of the elements, for the two-year period 1971–1972, for each month separately.From the above examination it has been ascertained that small ions concentration increases as smoke and/or sulfur dioxide concentration decreases. Also, small ions concentration increases as wind velocity increases.In addition, it was ascertained that sulfur dioxide contributes the least to the determination of the variance of small ions concentration, whilst the greatest contribution is made by smoke for the positive small ions or by wind velocity for the negative ones. 相似文献

The standard deviations and time-spectra of small ion number density have been measured at ground level under different atmospheric stability conditions. The auto-correlation correlograms and the time-spectra imply a scale of fluctuations corresponding to 1 to 4 min. No clear relationships between standard deviations of small ion number density and micro-meteorological parameters are observed. Thus the results are not a support for Monin-Obukhov similarity theory. For the highest frequencies the slopes of the spectra seem to follow the –5/3-law fairly well and the frequencies of the peak values of individual spectra lnfS(f) increase when the atmosphere stability increases, which is valid for ordinary micrometeorological parameters. 相似文献
