Common variogram models, such as spherical or exponential functions, increase monotonically with increasing lag distance. On the other hand, a hole-effect variogram typically exhibits sinusoidal waves that form peaks and troughs, thereby conveying the cyclicity of the underlying phenomenon. In order to incorporate this cyclicity into a stochastic simulation, hole effects in the experimental variogram must be fitted appropriately. In this paper, we recommend use of several multiplicative-composite variogram models to fit hole-effect experimental variograms. These consist of a cosine function to provide wavelength and phase of cyclicity, multiplied by a monotonic model (e.g., spherical) to attenuate amplitudes of the cyclical peaks and troughs. These composite models can successfully fit experimental lithology-indicator variograms that contain a range of cyclicities, although experimental variograms with poor cyclicity require special considerations. 相似文献

Analytical expressions are derived for the Poisson's ratios associated with a three-dimensional network of regular, corner-sharing
tetrahedra in which: (1) the tetrahedra are assumed to be rigid and free to rotate relative to each other; (2) the tetrahedra
are assumed to maintain shape and orientation but are free to change size (dilate); (3) tetrahedral rotation and dilation
are assumed to act concurrently. The structure has a primitive unit cell containing four tetrahedra and is analogous to the
molecular structure of α-cristobalite. Strain-dependent variations in Poisson's ratio are also predicted by the models. For
deformation due to tetrahedral rotation the network is found to exhibit negative Poisson's ratios in each of the three principal
directions, with the magnitude of the Poisson's ratio being dependent on the angle of rotation of the tetrahedra. The behaviour
of the Poisson's ratio is isotropic in the transverse plane, but anisotropic elsewhere. In the dilation model negative Poisson's
ratios equal to −1 are observed for uniaxial loading in any of the principal directions, with the value being constant irrespective
of tetrahedral size. The model for concurrent tetrahedral rotation and dilation allows positive as well as negative Poisson's
ratios, with the values determined by the framework geometry and relative strengths of the two mechanisms. The concurrent
model also offers a design route to materials and structures having ultrahigh Young's moduli.

Water-soluble organics in atmospheric particles: A critical review of the literature and application of thermodynamics to identify candidate compounds 总被引:15,自引:0,他引:15
Although organic compounds typically constitute a substantial fraction of the fine particulate matter (PM) in the atmosphere, their molecular composition remains poorly characterized. This is largely because atmospheric particles contain a myriad of diverse organic compounds, not all of which extract in a single solvent or elute through a gas chromatograph; therefore, a substantial portion typically remains unanalyzed. Most often the chemical analysis is performed on a fraction that extracts in organic solvents such as benzene, ether or hexane; consequently, information on the molecular composition of the water-soluble fraction is particularly sparse and incomplete.This paper investigates theoretically the characteristics of the water-soluble fraction by splicing together various strands of information from the literature. We identify specific compounds that are likely to contribute to the water-soluble fraction by juxtaposing observations regarding the extraction characteristics and the molecular composition of atmospheric particulate organics with compound-specific solubility and condensibility for a wide variety of organics. The results show that water-soluble organics, which constitute a substantial fraction of the total organic mass, include C2 to C7 multifunctional compounds (e.g., diacids, polyols, amino acids). The importance of diacids is already recognized; our results provide an impetus for new experiments to establish the atmospheric concentrations and sources of polyols, amino acids and other oxygenated multifunctional compounds. 相似文献
