Assessment of the seismic vulnerability of the building stock in the earthquake-prone Marmara region of Turkey is of growing importance since such information is needed for reliable estimation of the losses that possible future earthquakes are likely to induce. The outcome of such loss assessment exercises can be used in planning of urban/regional-scale earthquake protection strategies; this is a priority in Turkey, particularly following the destructive earthquakes of 1999. Considering the size of the building inventory, Istanbul and its surrounding area is a case for which it is not easy to determine the structural properties and characteristics of the building stock. In this paper, geometrical, functional and material properties of the building stock in the northern Marmara Region, particularly around Istanbul, have been investigated and evaluated for use in loss estimation models and other types of statistic- or probability-based studies. In order to do that, the existing reinforced concrete (RC) stock has been classified as ‘compliant’ or ‘non-compliant’ buildings, dual (frame-wall) or frame structures and emergent or embedded-beam systems. In addition to the statistical parameters such as mean values, standard deviations, etc., probability density functions and their goodness-of-fit have also been investigated for all types of parameters. Functionalities such as purpose of use and floor area properties have been defined. Concrete properties of existing and recently constructed buildings and also characteristics of 220 and 420 MPa types of steel have been documented. Finally, the financial effects of retrofitting operations and damage repair have been investigated.  相似文献

Predicting soil loss is necessary to establish soil conservation measures. Variability of soil and hydrological parameters complicates mathematical simulation of soil erosion processes. Methods for predicting unit plot soil loss in Sicily were developed by using 5 years of data from replicated plots. At first, the variability of the soil water content, runoff, and unit plot soil loss values collected at fixed dates or after an erosive event was investigated. The applicability of the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) was then tested. Finally, a method to predict event soil loss was developed. Measurement variability decreased as the mean increased above a threshold value but it was low also for low values of the measured variable. The mean soil loss predicted by the USLE was lower than the measured value by 48%. The annual values of the soil erodibility factor varied by seven times whereas the mean monthly values varied between 1% and 244% of the mean annual value. The event unit plot soil loss was directly proportional to an erosivity index equal to , being QRRe the runoff ratio times the single storm erosion index. It was concluded that a relatively low number of replicates of the variable of interest may be collected to estimate the mean for both high and particularly low values of the variable. The USLE with the mean annual soil erodibility factor may be applied to estimate the order of magnitude of the mean soil loss but it is not usable to estimate soil loss at shorter temporal scales. The relationship for estimating the event soil loss is a modified version of the USLE‐M, given that it includes an exponent for the QRRe term. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Two methods for generating streamflow forecasts in a Sahelian watershed, the Sirba basin, were compared. The direct method used a linear relationship to relate sea-surface temperature to annual streamflow, and then disaggregated on a monthly time scale. The indirect method used a linear relationship to generate annual precipitation forecasts, a temporal disaggregation to generate daily precipitation and the SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model to generate monthly streamflow. The accuracy of the forecasts was assessed using the coefficient of determination, the Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient and the Hit score, and their economic value was evaluated using the cost/loss ratio method. The results revealed that the indirect method was slightly more effective than the direct method. However, the direct method achieved higher economic value in the majority of cost/loss situations, allowed for predictions with longer lead times and required less information.  相似文献

This paper proposes methodological developments for quantifying the impact of residual axial shortening of first-story steel columns on earthquake loss estimations in steel moment-resisting frame (MRF) buildings. A new formulation is proposed that accounts for the likelihood of having to demolish a steel MRF building due to column residual axial deformations in addition to residual story-drift ratios. The formulation is informed by means of data from a comprehensive survey conducted worldwide to assess the likelihood of steel column repairability due to residual axial shortening. A practical method for quantifying column axial-shortening in parameterized system-level numerical simulations is presented. The proposed approach is illustrated by conducting economic seismic loss estimations in two case-study steel MRF buildings designed in urban California according to the current seismic design practice. It is found that when the ground-motion duration is appreciable, the examined steel MRFs are more prone to column axial-shortening than residual story-drifts at moderate to high seismic intensities. The results suggest that economic losses due to demolition may be underestimated if column residual axial-shortening is neglected from loss estimations. Limitations as well as directions for future research are discussed.  相似文献

Long-term field assessments of soil erosion on the landscape scale are very scarce. Such monitoring programmes create sound data regarding severity, extent, frequency and types of soil erosion and the vulnerability of particular crops. In a 20-year monitoring programme between 1997 and 2017, accurate erosion damage mapping was carried out on 203 fields on arable land in the Canton of Berne (Switzerland). During 115 field inspections, 4060 field years and 2165 mapped erosion systems were recorded. Because several soil conservation programmes were implemented during this period, two 10-year time periods (1st October 1997 to 30th September 2007 [P1] and 1st October 2007 to 30th September 2017 [P2]) were established and compared. The soil erosion rate was already low in P1 (mean: 0.74 t ha−1 year−1), but decreased significantly in P2 (mean: 0.20 t ha−1 year−1). During P1 and P2, respectively, 12 and 42% of the fields were without any visible erosion. Within 10 years, erosion occurred on each field on average 3.2 times in P1 and only 1.3 times in P2. Soil losses are spatially concentrated and linked to topographically defined pathways (thalwegs, slope depressions) or human-made flow pathways (wheel tracks, tramlines, headlands). Financial incentives, rising awareness among farmers, innovative contractor farmers and good extension service of cantonal agencies helped conserve 85% of the arable land in the study area with conservation tillage methods by 2015. As a result, soil erosion was significantly reduced. The field-based measurements show that a significant decrease in soil erosion is possible by changes in soil tillage practices and that erosion control is feasible almost everywhere under real-life conditions on farmers’ fields. Extreme high-magnitude and low-frequency storm events in arid zones provide the necessary runoff to entrain sediments from source areas and therefore dictate the linkages between hillslopes and channels. Nevertheless, the erosive impact of large storms remains difficult to predict. Most of the uncertainty lies in the lack of topographic change maps associated with single hydro-meteorological events. Consequently, event-based erosion models are poorly constrained and their extrapolation over long time periods remains uncertain. In this study, a 15-month Sentinel-1A coherence time series, optical and field data are used to map the spatial patterns of erosion after the 5-day storm occurred on March 2015, in the Atacama Desert. The coherence change detection (CCD) analysis suggests that temporal loss of coherence is related to variations in soil moisture, while permanent loss of coherence is related to modification of soil texture by erosion and sedimentation. Importantly, permanent loss of coherence is more apparent on gentle rather than steeper slopes, likely reflecting differences in regolith cover and thickness. These findings can contradict the landscape models predicting higher erosion on steeper hillslopes. The CCD technique represents a promising tool for analysing and modelling sediment connectivity in arid areas, giving a clear picture of the relation between sediment sources and sink pathways. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

有效评估震灾损失可及时、可靠地了解地震灾区实时情况,提高破坏性地震下人们的反应能力,满足应急指挥需求。为提高震灾损失评估精度,对所获取遥感图像进行滤波及局部灰度调整处理,提出基于遥感图像模板匹配的震毁灾损研究。首先获取震区的遥感影像,考虑所获取图像与模板图像的偏移状况对图像进行模板匹配,提取与模板匹配后特征区域的特征值,获取空间网格点上的成像值,依据成像点自动评估震灾损失,其中能量最大的点即为震害受损最严重的位置,对图像所有内廓像素点结果进行遍历,确定提取地震灾区整体的受损特征结果。仿真实验发现,所提方法可提取出震灾损失状况,初步为地震灾害损失评估提供参考借鉴,但仍需要进一步研究,以提高方法的普遍适用性。  相似文献

This paper discusses an analytical study that quantifies the expected earthquake‐induced losses in typical office steel frame buildings designed with perimeter special moment frames in highly seismic regions. It is shown that for seismic events associated with low probabilities of occurrence, losses due to demolition and collapse may be significantly overestimated when the expected loss computations are based on analytical models that ignore the composite beam effects and the interior gravity framing system of a steel frame building. For frequently occurring seismic events building losses are dominated by non‐structural content repairs. In this case, the choice of the analytical model representation of the steel frame building becomes less important. Losses due to demolition and collapse in steel frame buildings with special moment frames designed with strong‐column/weak‐beam ratio larger than 2.0 are reduced by a factor of two compared with those in the same frames designed with a strong‐column/weak‐beam ratio larger than 1.0 as recommended in ANSI/AISC‐341‐10. The expected annual losses (EALs) of steel frame buildings with SMFs vary from 0.38% to 0.74% over the building life expectancy. The EALs are dominated by repairs of acceleration‐sensitive non‐structural content followed by repairs of drift‐sensitive non‐structural components. It is found that the effect of strong‐column/weak‐beam ratio on EALs is negligible. This is not the case when the present value of life‐cycle costs is selected as a loss‐metric. It is advisable to employ a combination of loss‐metrics to assess the earthquake‐induced losses in steel frame buildings with special moment frames depending on the seismic performance level of interest. Studies on land loss in Tuvalu reveal the following findings. Although both sea level rise and coastal erosion can cause land loss in the tropic Pacific oceanic islands, their mechanisms are different. When sea level rises, the low elevation coastal zone submerges and the erosion datum plane rises, the beach process progresses normally as always, resulting in no beach sediment coarsening. When the sea level is stable, coastal erosion removes finer sediment from reef flat, beach and land, resulting in beach sediment coarsening. The human-induced coastal erosion in the tropic Pacific oceanic islands has the following features. 1) Erosion occurs or intensifies immediately after inappropriate human activities. 2) It occurs near the places having human activities and places related to the above places in sediment supply. 3) It often occurs on original prograding or stable coasts (on lagoon coasts for atolls) because there are more coastal engineering projects and other human activities on such coasts. 4) It is chronic, covering a long period of time. The coastal geological events in Tuvalu islands do not accord with the features resulted from sea level rise but do accord with the features resulted from coastal erosion, particularly from human-induced erosion. The land loss in Tuvalu is mainly caused by inappropriate human activities including coastal engineering and aggregate mining, and partly caused by cyclones. Moreover, all recent measurements (satellite altimetry,thermosteric sea level data and tide observations) so far have not been able to verify any sea level rise around Tuvalu islands.  相似文献
