A geophysical investigation of a landfill area was conducted as inextricable phase of a preliminary geotechnical, geological
and hydrogeological study of the area under investigation. Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), one of the most promising
prospecting techniques mainly concerning its effective contribution to resolve several environmental problems, was applied
for the geophysical modeling. ERT is a robust imaging method the theory and implementation of which are well documented in
geophysical research literature. The survey site is located in Akrotirion Peninsula, about 7 km east of Chania city in Crete
I. The geological setting comprises Trypalion limestones, marly limestones and a clayed weathered layer. Cavities are also
identified at various scales which are recent tectono-karstic voids. Due to the above-mentioned geological singularity and
in the light of the requirement for an environmentally safe construction of the landfill, an ERT survey was carried out. Specifically,
seven geoelectrical tomographies were conducted reaching the prospecting depth of 36 m. The resulted images conduced, to overcome
geotechnical problems since the spatial distribution of karstic voids was determined, to plan the future sites for waste disposal
as the geological conditions were studied in detail and to reliably estimate the thickness of the already deposited wastes.
The resulted images were confirmed using available borehole logs and ambient noise measurements. 相似文献

The presence of natural voids and cavities in subsurface karstic limestones causes severe problem for civil engineering and environmental management.The presence of such features hinders the extension of urbanizations particularly in the new metropolitan.The eastern part of Saudi Arabia contains various types of karstic limestone,sinkholes,solution cavities and voids.In this context,geophysical methods particularly electrical resistivity technique is used as a cost-effective solution for investigating subsurface caves,voids,and shallow weathered zones.2-D electrical resistivity data sets have been acquired along seven profiles in the new urbanization at Al Hassa area.Data processing has been carried out taking into consideration the response of synthetic models,which simulates physical models of the most common karstic features in the area.The results are very useful to determine the extension of shallow weathered zones and to locate different cavities underneath them.The hard limestone bedrock can also be detected and traced along the surveyed profiles. 相似文献

The 3-D seismic tomographic data are used together with field, core and well log structural information to determine the detailed 3-D architecture of fault zones in a granitic massif of volume 500×575×168 m at Mina Ratones area in the Albalá Granitic Pluton. To facilitate the integration of the different data, geostatistical simulation algorithms are applied to interpolate the relatively sparse structural (hard) control data conditioned to abundant but indirect 3-D (soft) seismic tomographic data. To effectively integrate geologic and tomographic data, 3-D migration of the velocity model from the time domain into the depth domain was essential. The resulting 3-D model constitutes an image of the fault zone architecture within the granitic massif that honours hard and soft data and provides an evaluation of the spatial variability of structural heterogeneities based on the computation of 3-D experimental variograms of Fracture Index (fault intensity) data. This probabilistic quantitative 3-D model of spatially heterogeneous fault zones is suitable for subsequent fluid flow simulations. The modeled image of the 3-D fault distribution is consistent with the fault architecture in the Mina Ratones area, which basically consists of two families of subvertical structures with NNE–SSW and ENE–WSW trends that displaces the surfaces of low-angle faults (North Fault) and follows their seismically detected staircase geometry. These brittle structures cut two subvertical dykes (27 and 27′ Dykes) with a NNE–SSW to N–S trend. The faults present high FI (FI>12) adjacent bands of irregular geometry in detail that intersect in space delimiting rhombohedral blocks of relatively less fractured granite (FI<6). Both structural domains likely correspond with the protolith and the damaged zone/fault core in the widely accepted model for fault zone architecture. Therefore, the construction of 3-D grids of the FI in granitic areas affected by brittle tectonics permits the quantitative structural characterization of the rock massif. 相似文献

Using the logic for quantitative inversion of present-day downhole thermal indicators, the inversion procedure can be used to determine unknown, or poorly known, chemical and physical parameters as well as other geological quantities of interest which impact on burial history and thermal history of an evolving sedimentary basin. Some such quantities are: amount of erosion and timing of unconformities, paleo-overpressuring, stratigraphic age, timing of igneous intrusion and insertion temperature, overthrust timing and frictional heating, fault and slump timing, effects due to emplacement of a radiocative layer, and salt emplacement and dissolution timing. Combining a priori unknown values of these chemical/physical and geological parameters with unknown (a priori) paleoheat flux variations, a theoretical scheme, called thermal indicator tomography, is developed for the systematic determination of all parameters at the same time and on the same footing. Natural and compacted soils are usually characterized by aggregation of particles. The mechanical behaviour of these materials
depends on soil structure. The oedometric compression tests performed on aggregated samples presented here showed that these
materials exhibit a yield limit depending not only on stress history and stress state but also on soil structure. Evidence
is provided using the neutron tomography technique. These results revealed that soil structure modification occurs together
with plastic deformations. The experimental results are used to propose a new state parameter to quantify the soil structure.
Based on pore-scale experimental observations, an evolution law for this parameter is proposed as a function of associated
plastic strains. Considering both soil fabric and inter-particle bonding effects, a new yield limit depending on stress state,
stress history and soil structure is introduced for the aggregated soils. Accordingly, a new constitutive framework consistent
with strain hardening plasticity is proposed to consider soil structure effects in the modelling of aggregated soils. 相似文献

Tackling fuel poverty is central to the delivery of the Scottish Executive’s commitment to social justice. Many Scottish rural households are not linked into the mains gas network and rely on expensive alternatives, despite being surrounded by plentiful supplies of low-cost renewable wood biomass. A regional study was undertaken to establish the potential market for pelletised wood fuel, available as a low-value by-product from the rapidly expanding Scottish forest industry sector. The wider implications of the research findings are analysed by extending the principles of industrial symbiosis from a site-specific to a regional scale. Promoting an indigenous pellet-based wood fuel market for rural Scotland would fulfil important Scottish Executive economic, social and environmental sustainability objectives. Adding off-site social symbiotic elements increases the potential for on-site technical symbiosis in nascent Scottish forest industry clusters. At present, market failure is preventing the realisation of these benefits, and the paper concludes by identifying ways in which market intermediation, through wood fuel energy service companies, might overcome the current barriers to exploiting such symbiosis. 相似文献
