A large number of chemical analyses of Greek thermal waters were evaluated in order to investigate spring water origin, water–rock interaction mechanisms, and estimate the thermal potential of the geothermal areas. Four water types were distinguished from geochemical diagrams. The relatively fresher waters include samples of Ca–HCO3 and Mg–HCO3 type waters originating from the schistose Rhodope Massif and the Quaternary basin of Aridea, respectively. Samples of the Na–HCO3 water type are typical of springs located in the post-orogenic basins of northern Greece. These hot, deep-rising Na–HCO3 waters circulate in a CO2-rich environment that favours the solubility of alkaline ions such as Na from siliceous rocks. Most of the samples belong to the Na–Cl water type and originate from Greek islands and coastal springs. These are characterized by the mixing of deep thermal solutions with seawater and fresh water. The presence of CO2 in thermal and mineral springs is due to the metamorphism of buried marine carbonate horizons while H2S is due to both local pyrite oxidation and the reduction of sulphates. The use of geothermometers suggested that the investigated geothermal areas have low enthalpy fluids at depth, while higher temperatures are likely present in Milos, Lesvos, Nisyros islands and Xanthi Basin.
Resumen Se ha evaluado un gran número de análisis químicos de aguas termales griegas con objeto de investigar el origen del agua en los manantiales, los mecanismos de interacción agua-roca, y estimar el potencial termal de las áreas geotérmicas. Se distinguieron cuatro tipos de aguas a partir de diagramas geoquímicos. Las aguas relativamente frescas incluyen muestras de agua tipo Ca–HCO3 y Mg–HCO3 que se originan en los esquistos del Macizo Rhodope y la cuenca Cuaternaria de Aridea, respectivamente. Las muestras de agua tipo Na–HCO3 son típicas de manantiales localizados en las cuencas post-orogénicas del norte de Grecia. Estas aguas calientes y profundas, de tipo Na–HCO3, circulan en un ambiente rico en CO2 que favorece la solubilidad de iones alcalinos, tal como Na proveniente de rocas silícicas. La mayoría de las muestras pertenecen al tipo de agua Na–Cl y se originan en islas y manantiales costeros griegos. Estas aguas se caracterizan por la mezcla de soluciones termales profundas con agua de mar y agua dulce. La presencia de CO2 en manantiales termales y minerales se debe a el metamorfismo de horizontes carbonatados marinos enterrados mientras que el H2S se debe a oxidación local de pirita y reducción de sulfatos. El uso de geotermómetros sugiere que las áreas termales investigadas tienen fluidos de baja entalpía a profundidad, mientras que las temperaturas más elevadas es probable que se presenten en Milos, Lesvos, islas de Nisyros y la cuenca Xanthi.

Résumé Un grand nombre danalyses chimiques des eaux thermales grecques ont été menées de manière à investiguer lorigine des eaux des sources thermales, les mécanismes dinteraction avec les roches traversées, et destimer le potentiel des zones géothermiques. Quatre types deau ont été distinguées sur base des diagrammes géochimiques. Les eaux les plus fraîches correspondent respectivement aux échantillons des eaux calco et magnéso carbonatées du massif schisteux de Rhodope et du bassin quaternaire dAridea. Les échantillons deaux sodi carbonatées proviennent typiquement des sources localisées dans les bassins posts-orogéniques du Nord de la Grèce. Ces chaudes et très profondes eaux sodi carbonatées circulent dans des environnements riches en CO2 qui favorisent la solubilité des ions alcalins, tel que le sodium, des roches siliceuses. La plus part des échantillons ont un facies chloruré sodique et proviennent des îles grecques ou des environnement côtier. Ces eaux sont caractérisées par des mélanges entre eaux profondes avec des eaux de mer et des eaux de surface. La présence de CO2 dans les eaux de sources thermales et minérales est due au métamorphisme des horizons de calcaires marins et couverts, tandis que la présence de H2S est due à loxydation locale de la pyrite et à la réduction des sulfates. Lutilisation de géothermomètres suggère que les zones géothermiques étudiées contiennent des eaux à faible enthalpie en profondeur, bien que des températures assez élevées soient rencontrées à Milos, Lesvos, sur les îles Nisyros et dans le bassin de Xanthi.

The geothermal flow which emerges by convection at the springs in Aragón is evaluated, and compared with the theoretical heat flow which permeates the surface of the region by conduction. The geological materials through which the convection takes place are defined (geothermal formations), and the areas where thermal convection appears most intensely are related.
Resumen En el presente trabajo se evalúa el flujo geotérmico que emerge por convección en los principales manantiales de aguas termales de Aragón (España), comparándolo con el flujo geotérmico que penetra en la corteza terrestre por conducción. Se definen las formaciones geotérmicas y se estudian las áreas en las que se concentra de forma preferente ese flujo termal por convección.

Le matériel géologique dans lequel la convection prend place est défnit (formations géothermiques) et les zones qui manifestent les plus importantes convections thermiques sont relatés.

Canada's post‐mined oil sands will have a higher concentration of salts compared with freshwater peatlands that dominate the landscape. While rare, naturally occurring saline wetlands do exist in Alberta's Boreal Plains and may function as analogues for reclamation, however, little is known about their hydrology. This paper investigates the geochemical and hydrologic characteristics of a natural saline‐spring peatland in Alberta's oil sands region. The fen is located within a saline groundwater discharge area connected to the erosional edge of the Grand Rapids Formation. Na+ (195–25,680 mgl?1) and Cl? (1785–56,249 mg l?1) were the dominant salts, and the fen transitioned sharply to freshwater along its margins because in part of subsurface mineral ridges that restricted shallow groundwater exchange. Salinity decreased from hypersaline to brackish along the local groundwater flow path but no active spring outlets were observed over the two‐year study. Vertical groundwater discharge was minimal because of the very low permeability of the underlying sediments. Subsurface storage was exceeded during periods of high flow, resulting in flooding and surface runoff that was enhanced by the ephemerally connected pond network. These findings have implications for reclamation, as mechanisms such as subsurface mineral ridges may function as effective saline groundwater‐control structures in the post‐mined environment. Incorporating saline wetlands into regional monitoring networks will help to better quantify natural discharge, which has implications for belowground wastewater storage related to in situ bitumen extraction.  The present studies were carried out along the southern Mediterranean coast of Turkey, where most of the karst springs discharge from highly karstified carbonate rocks. The case-study was applied in the Kaş-Kalkan karst region, considered one of the most important touristic Mediterranean provinces in southern Turkey. The purpose of this study is to identify the main water resources of the karst springs in the inland side and the expected groundwater flow paths that may recharge the coastal springs in the study area. A comparison of the physiochemical properties and isotopic contents of the karst springs along the Kaş-Kalkan coastline is also considered an important tool for identifying the hydrogeological characteristics and responses of the different units in the study area. Relevant studies were carried out also considering the morphological and structural characteristics of these karst springs and changes in their discharge amounts during the dry and wet periods. 从赣南横迳温泉区采集10个水样并分析了温泉及冷泉的水化学成分,认为热水起源于大气降水补给。在此基础上,还在温泉区采集了4个气样,测定了气体组分的含量及氦同位素.以及CO2和CH4的碳同位素。研究结果表明:横迳地区温泉气中CO2的含量很高(>96%),δCCO2较重(-4.43‰~-5.50‰),属幔源CO2;He同位素特征值(R/Ra)变化于1.36~2.11之问.均大于1,有幔源He的加入;本区温泉气的的组合类型为二氧化碳幔源温泉气,从整体上来说属于幔源无机成因气,是地幔脱气的产物。  相似文献

以广西马山县弄拉岩溶动力系统监测站为例, 通过人工及自动记录, 分别对表层岩溶泉水的物理、化学指标的多日和昼夜变化规律进行了研究。在不同的植被条件下, 水的物理、化学指标的多日与昼夜动态变化有不同的表现。在次生林条件下, 泉水物理化学指标动态变化相对稳定:电导率较高, 在599~ 603μs/cm之间, 钙离子浓度变化在73~90mg/ l 之间, 岩溶作用强度较大;在灌丛条件下, 泉水电导率较低, 为435~460μs/cm, 钙离子浓度在52~83mg/l 之间, 多日和昼夜变化幅度较大, 说明灌丛区表层岩溶泉更易受地表环境变化的影响, 敏感性更强, 总体上岩溶作用强度不及次生林区。   相似文献

Snowmelt‐fed springs and small (0.5 km2) upland catchments in alpine areas of the western United States contribute significantly to the quantity and inorganic chemistry of water delivered to downstream basins but have not been studied extensively. Mineral weathering, transit time, and hydrologic mixing control the solute chemistry of waters that drain the upland zone of Niwot Ridge, Colorado Front Range, and adjacent areas in the granitic core of the Southern Rocky Mountains. Water in 37 springs sampled in this study flows in generally short steep paths (~0.3 km) through shallow regolith with mean transit times (MTT) of weeks to months, producing solutions dominated by Si, Ca2+, Na+, and HCO3?, locally SO42?. Rock type is a significant control on spring, surface, and shallow groundwater chemistry, and plagioclase (oligoclase) is the major source of dissolved Na+ and Si. Concentrations of Ca2+ exceed stoichiometric predictions of oligoclase weathering by ~3.5×; excess Ca2+ likely represents weathering of aeolian material, vein calcite, or trace minerals. Concentrations of base cations and Si increase slowly with estimated MTT of 0.2 years for Niwot Ridge spring waters, and several years for shallow groundwater sampled by wells. Chemical weathering of silicate minerals is slow with estimated rates of ~2.0 and 0.2 pmol·m?2·s?1 for oligoclase and microcline, respectively; the most mineralized spring waters are saturated only with respect to kaolinite and montmorillonite. More than 50% of the dissolved base cations + Si measured in Boulder Creek at Orodell (~25 km downstream) accumulate before water emerges from alpine springs on Niwot Ridge. Warming global temperatures are shifting more high‐elevation precipitation to rain, potentially changing run‐off patterns, transit time, and solute loads. Acquisition of solutes by alpine waters thus has implications far beyond small upland catchments.  相似文献

Small‐scale heterogeneities and large changes in hydraulic gradient over short distances can create preferential groundwater flow paths that discharge to lakes. A 170 m2 grid within an area of springs and seeps along the shore of Shingobee Lake, Minnesota, was intensively instrumented to characterize groundwater‐lake interaction within underlying organic‐rich soil and sandy glacial sediments. Seepage meters in the lake and piezometer nests, installed at depths of 0·5 and 1·0 m below the ground surface and lakebed, were used to estimate groundwater flow. Statistical analysis of hydraulic conductivity estimated from slug tests indicated a range from 21 to 4·8 × 10?3 m day?1 and small spatial correlation. Although hydraulic gradients are overall upward and toward the lake, surface water that flows onto an area about 2 m onshore results in downward flow and localized recharge. Most flow occurred within 3 m of the shore through more permeable pathways. Seepage meter and Darcy law estimates of groundwater discharge agreed well within error limits. In the small area examined, discharge decreases irregularly with distance into the lake, indicating that sediment heterogeneity plays an important role in the distribution of groundwater discharge. Temperature gradients showed some relationship to discharge, but neither temperature profiles nor specific electrical conductance could provide a more convenient method to map groundwater–lake interaction. These results suggest that site‐specific data may be needed to evaluate local water budget and to protect the water quality and quantity of discharge‐dominated lakes.
