Abstract This study uses survey and focus group methods to explore attitudes toward and experiences of nature among millennial-aged students in northern Colorado. First, results confirm that young people possess a strong interest in the outdoors yet time, transportation, and new technologies hamper their ability to visit public lands and outdoor spaces. Second, respondents experience nature in ways more mediated by new technologies such as cell phones and nature DVDs. Third, citizen science and active learning show promise as techniques for returning young people to the outdoors. The challenge lies in teaching young people to reimagine the outdoors not as elsewhere or out there but as a backyard geographic space. 相似文献

A technique is proposed for Earths gravity field modeling on the basis of satellite accelerations that are derived from precise orbit data. The functional model rests on Newtons second law. The computational procedure is based on the pre-conditioned conjugate-gradient (PCCG) method. The data are treated as weighted average accelerations rather than as point-wise ones. As a result, a simple three-point numerical differentiation scheme can be used to derive them. Noise in the orbit-derived accelerations is strongly dependent on frequency. Therefore, the key element of the proposed technique is frequency-dependent data weighting. Fast convergence of the PCCG procedure is ensured by a block-diagonal pre-conditioner (approximation of the normal matrix), which is derived under the so-called Colombo assumptions. Both uninterrupted data sets and data with gaps can be handled. The developed technique is compared with other approaches: (1) the energy balance approach (based on the energy conservation law) and (2) the traditional approach (based on the integration of variational equations). Theoretical considerations, supported by a numerical study, show that the proposed technique is more accurate than the energy balance approach and leads to approximately the same results as the traditional one. The former finding is explained by the fact that the energy balance approach is only sensitive to the along-track force component. Information about the cross-track and the radial component of the gravitational potential gradient is lost because the corresponding force components do no work and do not contribute to the energy balance. Furthermore, it is shown that the proposed technique is much (possibly, orders of magnitude) faster than the traditional one because it does not require the computation of the normal matrix. Hints are given on how the proposed technique can be adapted to the explicit assembling of the normal matrix if the latter is needed for the computation of the model covariance matrix.Acknowledgments. Information on tree species composition is crucial in forest management and can be obtained using remote sensing. While the topic has been addressed frequently over the last years, the remote sensing-based identification of tree species across wide and complex forest areas is still sparse in the literature. Our study presents a tree species classification of a large fraction of the Białowieża Forest in Poland covering 62 000 ha and being subject to diverse management regimes. Key objectives were to obtain an accurate tree species map and to examine if the prevalent management strategy influences the classification results. Tree species classification was conducted based on airborne hyperspectral HySpex data. We applied an iterative Support Vector Machine classification and obtained a thematic map of 7 individual tree species (birch, oak, hornbeam, lime, alder, pine, spruce) and an additional class containing other broadleaves. Generally, the more heterogeneous the area was, the more errors we observed in the classification results. Managed forests were classified more accurately than reserves. Our findings indicate that mapping dominant tree species with airborne hyperspectral data can be accomplished also over large areas and that forest management and its effects on forest structure has an influence on classification accuracies and should be actively considered when progressing towards operational mapping of tree species composition. 相似文献

基于湖北省第一次地理国情普查数据、基础地理信息数据和统计年鉴等资料,采用洛伦兹曲线、Moran指数等对江汉平原典型4个粮食主产区监利县、洪湖市、仙桃市、潜江市的粮食产量空间格局进行了分析和研究。研究表明:①洪湖市耕地资源与粮食产量间的对应关系较为平等,粮食单产稳定,粮食生产空间聚集显著;②监利县、潜江市与仙桃市的耕地、粮食产量表现出极弱空间相关性或无相关性,粮食生产能力相对较差,耕地资源及产量未表现出空间聚集优势。该结论可为农业部门制定农业生产计划和发展规划提供良好的数据支撑,为地理国情普查成果的应用提供借鉴。 相似文献

本文尝试通过模拟出租车的路径选择探索乘车软件推广对出租车寻客路径偏好造成的影响。基于出租车的历史寻客轨迹,提取起终点对之间的出租车寻客路径集,选取路径的行程距离、历史乘客数目、历史载客行程距离等六个指标,对出租车的寻客路径选择行为进行多项Logit模型建模。通过分析模型的系数大小,得到各因子对出租车寻客路径选择的影响以及出租车在起终点对间寻客的偏好因子;通过统计出租车在各行政区内或跨行政区寻客时以各因子为偏好因子的起终点对数目,得到偏好因子的空间分布差异;此外,通过对比乘车软件推广前后的建模结果,得到出租车寻客路径选择偏好的变化规律。 相似文献

This study illustrates how national immigration policy relegates undocumented immigrant children to spaces of liminal citizenship, which shape their aspirations for higher education. Recognizing the power of migrant narratives, and the importance of privileging youths’ voices through children's geographies, we present the narratives of undocumented high school students from several rural North Carolina communities. Despite various barriers facing undocumented students, most have high academic aspirations. Students construct new forms of citizenship, legitimating their claims to higher education access through their achievement. Their liminal status, however, contributes to the formation of conflicted, “in-between” identities. 相似文献
