We present the results of a deep 610-MHz survey of the 1 H XMM–Newton / Chandra survey area with the Giant Metre-wave Radio Telescope. The resulting maps have a resolution of ∼7 arcsec and an rms noise limit of 60 μJy. To a 5σ detection limit of 300 μJy, we detect 223 sources within a survey area of 64 arcmin in diameter. We compute the 610-MHz source counts and compare them to those measured at other radio wavelengths. The well-known flattening of the Euclidean-normalized 1.4-GHz source counts below ∼2 mJy, usually explained by a population of starburst galaxies undergoing luminosity evolution, is seen at 610 MHz. The 610-MHz source counts can be modelled by the same populations that explain the 1.4-GHz source counts, assuming a spectral index of −0.7 for the starburst galaxies and the steep spectrum active galactic nucleus (AGN) population. We find a similar dependence of luminosity evolution on redshift for the starburst galaxies at 610 MHz as is found at 1.4 GHz (i.e. ' Q '= 2.45+0.3 −0.4 ). 相似文献

We present radio observations at frequencies ranging from 240 to 8460 MHz of the radio galaxy 4C 29.30 (J0840+2949) using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT), the Very Large Array (VLA) and the Effelsberg telescope. We report the existence of weak extended emission with an angular size of ∼520 arcsec (639 kpc) within which a compact edge-brightened double-lobed source with a size of 29 arcsec (36 kpc) is embedded. We determine the spectrum of the inner double from 240 to 8460 MHz and show that it has a single power-law spectrum with a spectral index of ∼0.8. Its spectral age is estimated to be ≲33 Myr. The extended diffuse emission has a steep spectrum with a spectral index of ∼1.3 and a break frequency ≲240 MHz. The spectral age is ≳200 Myr, suggesting that the extended diffuse emission is due to an earlier cycle of activity. We re-analyse archival X-ray data from Chandra and suggest that the X-ray emission from the hotspots consists of a mixture of non-thermal and thermal components, the latter being possibly due to gas which is shock heated by the jets from the host galaxy. 相似文献

We present 0.5-arcsec-resolution near-infrared images of six ultraluminous infrared galaxies with known redshifts. Six of the eight bright nuclei are resolved on kiloparsec scales, suggesting that there is significant circumnuclear star formation or close progenitor nuclei. At this spatial resolution, the nuclei have very red colours that cannot in general be reproduced by reddening stellar light, but require an additional component of hot dust emission. In five of the six primary nuclei more than 20 per cent of the K -band continuum originates in hot dust, but the temperature cannot be determined by JHK broad-band colours alone. Comparison with the spectral shapes, however, does allow the temperature to be constrained, and we find in every case that it is at the upper end of the permissible range, ≳1000 K. This does not necessarily imply that there is an active galactic nucleus present, since there is evidence that stellar processes can also generate dust this hot via stochastic heating of small grains. The quantities of hot dust we have found here can make up to 0.5-mag difference to the K -band magnitude even at , with implications for observations and population synthesis models of higher-redshift objects. Observations in the L or M bands, where hot dust is most important at , could help to discriminate between models of dusty starbursts and ellipticals. 相似文献

Abstract The Hercynian granitic basement which forms the Tenda Massif in NE Corsica represents part of the leading edge of the European Plate during middle-to-late Cretaceous (Eoalpine) high P metamorphism. The metamorphism of this basement, induced by the overthrusting of a blueschist facies (schistes lustrés) nappe, was confined to a major ductile shear zone (c. 1000m thick) within which deformation increases upwards towards the overlying nappe. Metamorphism within the basement mostly records lower blueschist facies conditions (crossite + epidote) except near the base of the shear zone where the greenschist facies assemblage albite + actinolitic amphibole has developed instead of crossite. Study of the primary mafic phase breakdown reactions within hornblende granodiorite reveals the following metamorphic zonation. Zone 1: biotite to chlorite. Towards zone 2: biotite to phengite. Zone 2: Hornblende to actinolitic Ca-amphibole + albite + sphene, and biotite to actinolitic Ca-amphibole + albite + phengite + Ti-ore + epidote. Zone 3: Hornblende to crossite + low Ti-biotite + phengite + sphene, and biotite to crossite + low Ti-biotite + phengite + Ti-ore + sphene ± epidote. P-T conditions at the base of the shear zone are estimated to have been 390-490°C at 600-900 M Pa (6-9kbar) and the Corsican basement is therefore deduced to have been buried to 20-30 km during metamorphism. This relatively shallow metamorphism contrasts with some other areas in the Western Alps where the Eoalpine event apparently buried the European continental crust to depths of 80 km or more. As there is no evidence for a long history of blueschist facies metamorphism prior to the involvement of the European continent, it is deduced that the Eoalpine blueschists were produced during the collision of the Insubric plate with Europe, rather than during Tethyan intraoceanic subduction. Coherent blueschist terrains such as the schistes lustres probably record buovant feature collision and obduction tectonics rather than any preceding oceanic subduction. 相似文献

Interferometry in the optical and near infrared has so far played a marginal role in Extragalactic Astronomy. Active Galactic
Nuclei are the brightest and most compact extragalactic sources, nonetheless only a very limited number could be studied with
speckle interferometry and none with long baseline interferometry. The VLTI will allow the study of moderately faint extragalactic
objects with very high spatial resolution thus opening a new window on the universe. With this paper we focus on three scientific
cases to show how AMBER and MIDI can be used to tackle open issues in extragalactic astronomy.

Observations of the Virgo Cluster galaxy NGC 4569 in soft X-rays and in Hα reveal both an asymmetrically distributed hot gaseous
halo and a giant filament of diffuse emission, respectively, extending from the same side of the disk, the latter one to at
least 8.8 kpc. A deep longslit spectrum along the filament shows velocities systematically different from the systemic velocity
of NGC 4569. With the inclination of the disk one can determine the Hα spur as a giant outflow in NGC 4569.
