The effect of the Coriolis forces on the dynamicsof shear and density layers instratified flows is investigated, an effectthat has not been taken into account inmost previous studies of turbulence-meanfield or wave-mean field interactions.For instance, recent studies have shownthat shear and density layers can grow inthe presence of turbulence in a stronglystratified fluid but the effect of planetaryrotation was not taken into account. Toaddress this problem, wave-mean flowinteraction in a stratified fluid is hereinvestigated in the presence of rotation usingdirect numerical simulation. The results showthat the wave-mean flow interactionand the formation of layers is less intensewhen rotation is present because thehorizontal mean motions are deviated by theCoriolis forces, which tends to reducethe distortion of the wave field, and thusthe wave-induced fluxes of buoyancy andmomentum. In the present work, the Poseidon Nearshore Wave Model (PNWM) developed in the framework of the POSEIDON project 1 , and its application to the prediction of the wave conditions in nearshore/coastal regions of Greek seas is presented. The PNWM is based on a one-way energy coupling between a third-generation, phase-averaged, nearshore wave model and a local phase-resolving model, nested in the first model. The local wave model is supported by the consistent coupled-mode theory, based on an enhanced local-mode representation of the wave velocity field, which except for the propagating and the evanescent modes includes an additional mode, permitting the exact satisfaction of the sloping-bottom boundary condition, even in areas with locally steep bottom slope and large curvature. Thus, three-dimensional diffraction effects are fully treated in the local nested area. Numerical results are presented demonstrating the application of the PNWM to nearshore and coastal sites of the Greek seas. 相似文献

Pollution of the environment due to leakage from waste repositories is a well-known and wide spread problem. Emphasis has therefore been put on design of liners for such repositories, focusing on hydraulic conductivity and its variation with time, liner composition, water content, compaction etc. The paper addresses the hydraulic conductivity of sand/bentonite mixtures, especially the variation of the hydraulic conductivity as a function of bentonite content, compaction and degree of saturation. In order to better understand the variation of the hydraulic conductivity of a sand–bentonite mixture a new parameter k
1 has been proposed. The parameter reflects the amount of bentonite per pore volume and can easily be calculated based on the amount of bentonite and the dry density of the soil mixture. Thereby, the hydraulic conductivity can be predicted as a function of different degres of compaction. A direct time domain boundary element method is presented based on the Stokes fundamental solutions, discretized in both time and space, and an efficient time step-by-step solution that minimizes the accumulation of errors. A non-singular numerical integration procedure, in the Cauchy sense, is proposed for the generation of the associated influence matrices. This methodology is shown to be efficient for the solution of a number of computationally intensive problems in the area of soil–structure interaction. In addition, an algorithm for the direct calculation of the response of massive foundations to externally applied forces and/or obliquely incident seismic waves is introduced. Theoretical considerations (Snell's law) suggest that low-velocity fanomalies are undersampled and therefore should be poorly resolved by inversion schemes based on ray-tracing methods. A synthetic study considering a 40×20 m low-velocity anomaly (300 m/s) placed at the center of a 400×50 m block with gradient background velocity model (from 3000 m/s at the surface to 4000 m/s at the base) indicates that the low ray density in ray-tracing coverage diagrams of tomographic inversion studies can be used as evidence for the existence of low-velocity anomalies. Combined normal incidence seismic reflection images and the velocity models obtained by tomographic inversions of first-arrival travel times form an efficient scheme to resolve low-velocity anomalies such as fracture zones. Furthermore, the velocity models derived from tomographic inversions are used in a wave equation datuming algorithm to account for statics caused by a strongly laterally variable shallow surface (weathering) layer and provide seismic reflection images of fracture zones (low-velocity anomaly) within a granitic pluton. 相似文献

The objectives of this study are to design an optimal electro-enhanced permeable reactive barrier (E2PRB) system for the remediation
of trichloroethylene (TCE)-contaminated water using zero valent iron (ZVI) and direct current (DC) and to investigate the
mechanisms responsible for TCE degradation in different ZVI-DC configurations. A series of column experiments was conducted
to evaluate the effect of different arrangements of electrodes and ZVI barriers in the column on the TCE removal capacity
(RC). In twelve different combinations of ZVI and/or DC application in the test columns, the rate of reductive dechlorination
of TCE was improved up to six times with simultaneous application of ZVI and DC compared to that using ZVI only. The most
effective arrangement of electrode and ZVI for TCE removal was the column set with ZVI and a cathode installed at the down
gradient. Based on the electrokinetic study for the column systems with only DC input, single acid front movement could explain
different RCs. An enhanced dechlorination rate of TCE using E2PRB systems, compared to a conventional PRB system, was observed,
and is considered to be attributed to more electron sources: (1) external DC, (2) electrolysis of water, (3) oxidation of
ZVI, (4) oxidation of dissolved Fe2+, (5) oxidation of molecular hydrogen at the cathode, and (6) oxidation of Fe2+ in mineral precipitates. Each of these electron sources was evaluated for their potential influencing the TCE RC through
the electron competition model and energy consumption. A strong correlation between the quantity of electrons generated, RC,
and the energy-effectiveness was found. 相似文献
