Airborne and marine magnetic observations in East Antarctica and adjacent seas of the Indian Ocean were compiled for a magnetic anomaly map of the Antarctic. For East Antarctica, over 260,000 line km of Russian reconnaissance magnetic data were used that had been collected since 1955 mainly at line spacings of about 5, 20 and 50 km. For the offshore areas, magnetic data from American, Australian, German, Japanese, and Russian marine expeditions were incorporated. Digitally recorded data and data digitized from published and unpublished maps and profiles were included in the compilation. Local grids of these data were developed and merged into a regional grid at an interval of 5 km. The prime product of this compilation is a shaded-relief map that shows the most complete and coherent perspective to date of the region's magnetic character. In combination with other types of data, the compilation provides new insight on the tectonic features and history of this largely inaccessible region of the world. It maps out approximately 4300 km of the Antarctic Continental Margin Magnetic Anomaly (ACMMA) related to Gondwana breakup, new cratons and mobile belts, and large submarine igneous provinces.  相似文献

Geophysical Evidence for Terrane Boundaries in South-Central Argentina   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The geological interpretation of high-resolution aeromagnetic data over the La Pampa province, in central Argentina, in addition to lower resolution magnetic information from the region of the Neuquén and Colorado basins, leads to the definition of the precise boundaries of the Chilenia, Cuyania, Pampia and Patagonia terranes, as well as that of the Río de la Plata Craton, within the study region. The high-resolution aeromagnetic survey data are compared and studied in conjunction with all the available geological information, to produce a map of the solid geology of this region, which is largely covered by Quaternary sediments. A number of structures of different magnitudes, as well as their relative chronology, are also recognized, i.e., regional faults, sub-regional faults, fractures and shear zones, as well as the most conspicuous magnetic fabric of the basement that reflects its main planar structures. Three different basements are distinguished on the basis of their contrasting magnetic character, and are interpreted to represent the Cuyania and Pampia terranes and the Río de la Plata Craton, separated from each other by large-scale discontinuities. In the western part of the study region an additional major discontinuity separates the Chilenia and Cuyania terranes. In the southernmost area studied, WNW-trending structures are predominant, particularly a major NNE-vergent thrust that indicates the truncation of the Cuyania-Pampia suture and is regarded to be related to the possible collision of the Patagonia terrane. An E–W – trending magnetic and gravity anomaly traversing the full extra-Andean Argentine territory, located immediately to the south of 39°S, represents a major structure. The activation of this structure during the Mesozoic gave rise to the Huincul Ridge and marks the interruption of the distinct N-S structures of the Chilenia, Cuyania and Pampia terranes, as well as those of the Río de la Plata Craton, to the north. This E–W represents the suture zone of the Patagonia terrane.  相似文献

The absorption of hydrodynamic pressure waves at the reservoir bottom has dominant effects on the structural response of the dam when subjected to ground motion. In the present study, a model is proposed for the absorption effects of the reservoir bottom in the earthquake analysis of dams. The model utilizes the wave reflection coefficient approach and is based on the solution of the wave equation in a sediment layer of viscoelastic material with a constant thickness overlying an elastic, semi-infinite foundation. Numerical studies were conducted to evaluate the effect of the sediment layer thickness and material properties as well as the effect of reflection of waves from the underlying rock. It is shown that the current approach of assuming the wave reflection coefficient at the reservoir bottom based on the characteristics of the sediment material and excluding the effect of the reflected waves from the underlying rock, may significantly underestimate the seismic response of the dam.  相似文献

A significant tendency is shown for both Etesians and (+, –) sector boundaries of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) to occur on the same solar rotation days, during the main period of the Etesians effect (July–August). In addition, the solar activity seems to control the Etesians distribution within the IMF sector structure. In the epoch of maximum there is a significant tendency of Etesians to occur during toward IMF days. In contrast, in the epoch of minimum Etesians occur mainly during away IMF days. Finally, in the epoch of intermediate the Etesians are uniformly distributed in away and toward IMF days. Since these conclusions are statistically significant at high confidence levels, it is fair to assume that IMF and solar activity seem to contribute, to some extent, to the Etesians occurrences, as well as to their distribution within the solar rotation and the IMF sector structure; that is, some solar contribution to the tropospheric circulation is implied.  相似文献

Although the literature on growth management is extensive, few researchers have explored policy‐oriented evaluation methodologies. This article develops a new methodology to measure urban sprawl in order to evaluate the geographical effects of urban growth boundaries in Pierce County, Washington. The methodology utilizes residential building permit data from 1991 to 2002 that were put into a geographic information system and geocoded to the Pierce County street centerline file. The results of our study indicate that since the establishment in 1995 of urban growth boundaries there has been a substantial increase in the clustering of residential permits inside those boundaries. The implications of these findings are important for planning practitioners and the evaluation of growth management policies throughout the United States and elsewhere.  相似文献

On the basis of previous study of the 1679 Sanhe-Pinggu(M8.0) earthquake,the biggest event in history ever recorded in Beijing and its adjacent area,we made a 3-D strong ground motion simulation utilizing the staggered-grid finite differences method to study the distributions of peak ground velocity with different earthquake source models in the Beijing region.In the paper,earthquake source models and a transmission medium velocity model are established and the corresponding parameters are given in accordance to the results from a related previous study.Then,using a three-dimensional finite difference computing program of near-fault strong ground motion developed by Graves,the peak ground velocity caused by a destructive earthquake in the Beijing area is simulated.In our computation model,the earthquake source is 3km in depth,and a total number of 21,679 observation points on the ground surface are figured out.The transmission medium velocity model is composed of four stratums which are the Quaternary deposit,the upper crust,the upper part of the middle crust and the lower part of the middle crust.With the minimum grid spacing of 0.15km,a total of 2.28×106 grids are generated.Using a time step of 0.02 seconds we calculated the peak ground velocity for a duration of 8 seconds.After the analysis of the simulation results,we observed some basic characteristics of near-fault strong ground motion such as the concentration effect of near-fault peak ground velocity,rupture directivity effect,hanging wall effect,and basin effect.The results from our simulation and analysis suggest that the source and transmitting medium parameters in our model are suitable and the finite difference method is applicable to estimate the distribution of strong ground motion in the study region.  相似文献

Lake breezes are thermally direct circulations that form as a result of the differential heating of land and water and are important in modifying local climate and triggering convection; they have also been linked to tornadogenesis. Although lake breezes are generally well understood, studies of smaller lakes have been relatively scarce, and none have examined lake-breeze circulations in southern Manitoba even though they are seemingly apparent on weather radar. The objectives of this paper are to provide a radar-based analysis of lake-breeze frequency and characteristics in southern Manitoba, determine the detectability of lake-breeze fronts using the radar analysis with data collected in 2013, assess the types of lake-breeze circulations that occur, and examine the meteorological conditions in which they occur. Between 2008 and 2013, lake-breeze fronts were noted on 205 days using radar over the summer months, accounting for 37% of study days, with an average of 11–12 days with lake-breeze fronts each month. These findings agree fairly well with, and are only slightly less than, frequencies reported for Lake Michigan but are lower than the most recent findings for southern Ontario. In an effort to validate the results, a broad comparison between the radar analysis and a more complete analysis using satellite and surface stations is provided for 2013 demonstrating that radar is more useful for detecting lake breezes around Lake Manitoba than around Lake Winnipeg. Lake-breeze circulations originating on Lake Manitoba and the Shoal lakes were classified into three types. The distribution of types for the Shoal lakes was similar to previous findings by other authors with “moderate deformation” circulations being the most frequent. Finally, a brief meteorological analysis was completed for each month of this study. The results of the analysis were inconclusive with no single meteorological factor being consistently well correlated to higher or lower lake-breeze frequency.  相似文献
