The introduction of low-frequency radio arrays is expected to revolutionize the study of the reionization epoch. Observation of the contrast in redshifted 21-cm emission between a large H ii region and the surrounding neutral intergalactic medium (IGM) will be the simplest and most easily interpreted signature. However, the highest redshift quasars known are thought to reside in an ionized IGM. Using a semi-analytic model we describe the redshifted 21-cm signal from the IGM surrounding quasars discovered using the i -drop-out technique (i.e. quasars at z ∼ 6 ). We argue that while quasars at z < 6.5 seem to reside in the post-overlap IGM, they will still provide valuable probes of the late stages of the overlap era because the light-travel time across a quasar proximity zone should be comparable to the duration of overlap. For redshifted 21-cm observations within a 32-MHz bandpass, we find that the subtraction of a spectrally smooth foreground will not remove spectral features due to the proximity zone. These features could be used to measure the neutral hydrogen content of the IGM during the late stages of reionization. The density of quasars at z ∼ 6 is now well constrained. We use the measured quasar luminosity function to estimate the prospects for discovery of high-redshift quasars in fields that will be observed by the Murchison Widefield Array. 相似文献

Estimating the temperature and metal abundance of the intracluster and the intragroup media is crucial to determine their global metal content and to determine fundamental cosmological parameters. When a spatially resolved temperature or abundance profile cannot be recovered from observations (e.g. for distant objects), or deprojection is difficult (e.g. due to a significant non-spherical shape), only global average temperature and abundance are derived. After introducing a general technique to build hydrostatic gaseous distributions of prescribed density profile in potential wells of any shape, we compute the global mass-weighted and emission-weighted temperature and abundance for a large set of barotropic equilibria and an observationally motivated abundance gradient. We also compute the spectroscopic-like temperature that is recovered from a single temperature fit of observed spectra. The derived emission-weighted abundance and temperatures are higher by 50 to 100 per cent than the corresponding mass-weighted quantities, with overestimates that increase with the gas mean temperature. Spectroscopic temperatures are intermediate between mass and luminosity-weighted temperatures. Dark matter flattening does not lead to significant differences in the values of the average temperatures or abundances with respect to the corresponding spherical case (except for extreme cases). 相似文献

Large amounts of particles ejected from the nucleus surface are present in the vicinity of the cometary nuclei when comets
are near the Sun (at heliocentric distances ≤2 AU). The largest dust grains ejected may constitute a hazard for spatial vehicles.
We tried to obtain the bounded orbits of those particles and to investigate their stability along several orbital periods.
The model includes the solar and the cometary gravitational forces and the solar radiation pressure force. The nucleus is
assumed to be spherical. The dust grains are also assumed to be spherical, and radially ejected. We include the effects of
centrifugal forces owing to the comet rotation. An expression for the most heavy particles that can be lifted is proposed.
Using the usual values adopted for the case of Halley’s comet, the largest grains that can be lifted have a diameter about
5 cm, and the term due to the rotation is negligible. However, that term increases the obtained value for the maximum diameter
of the lifted grain in a significant amount when the rotation period is of the order of a few hours. 相似文献

We consider the effects of the grain size, shape, structure, and chemical composition as well as the angle between the grain rotation axis and the incident ray on the full widths at half maximum (FWHM) of the polarization bands in the two deepest infrared absorption bands observed in the spectra of protostars, the water-ice band centered at 3.1 μm and the silicate band centered at 9.7 μm, using a core—mantle confocal spheroid model with various axial ratios a/b and relative volumes of the core material. We have found that the observed polarization bands with FWHMp < 0.3 μm in the water-ice absorption band can be explained only by oblate and prolate particles with r v ≤ 0.35 μm and the polarization bands with FWHMp ≈ 0.3 μm can be explained only by particles with r v ≈ 0.35 μm. Broad silicate absorption bands (FWHM ≈ 3 μm) with broad polarization bands (FWHMp ≈ 2.7 μm) can be explained by particles with r v ≈ 0.35 μm. Narrow silicate absorption bands (FWHM ≤ 3 μm) with any FWHM of the polarization bands can be explained by a mixture of particles of two types of olivine. Narrow polarization bands (FWHMp ≈ 2 μm) with broad absorption bands can be explained only by very small particles, r v ≤ 0.1 μm. We have found the relationships between the effective polarization and extinction cross sections and estimated the ranges of observed polarizabilities that can be explained by particles of given shape and orientation in each of the bands independently. Independent studies of the observational data for each of the bands are shown to give a wider choice of particle model parameters. 相似文献

The initial modeling method based on TTI anisotropy can provide an initial model for the fine modeling of tomographic inversion, and the quality of the initial model directly affects the efficiency and accuracy of tomographic inversion. It is necessary to study the accurate initial modeling method of TTI anisotropy. Based on the conventional flow of the initial modeling method of TTI anisotropic, in this paper the anisotropic parameter extraction formula was perfected, a local tomography method to optimize the flow of the initial modeling method of TTI anisotropy was introduced, and the accuracy of the initial model was further improved, which is more consistent with the actual geological conditions and conducive to the fine modeling of the later tomographic inversion. This paper presents a thermo‐hydro‐mechanical framework to model the drying behavior of Boom clay. First, the experimental campaign conducted Noémie Prime is briefly presented because it is used to validate the model. The data acquisition and processing is emphasized because of the use of X‐ray microtomography to be able to more accurately compare experimental and numerical strain fields. The different submodels are introduced. Numerical simulations are performed to illustrate the capability of the proposed model to reproduce the observed behavior. Finally, a comprehensive sensitivity study on several key model parameters associated with the water retention curve, and the permeability of the medium, is performed to get a better understanding of the physics behind the coupled model. 相似文献

The paper presents closed‐form solutions for stress and displacement influence functions for stress discontinuity (SD) and displacement discontinuity (DD) elements, for a two‐dimensional plane‐strain elastic, transversely anisotropic medium. The solutions for SD elements are based on Kelvin's problem and for DD elements on the concept of dipoles. Stress and displacement influence functions are derived for the following elements: constant SD, linear SD, constant DD, linear DD, square root DD, parabolic DD, constant DD surface, and linear DD surface elements. The formulations are incorporated into FROCK, a hybridized boundary element method code, and are validated by providing comparisons between the results from FROCK and the finite element code ABAQUS. A limited parametric analysis shows the effects of slight anisotropy on the stress field around the tip of a crack and of the orientation of the crack with respect to the axes of elastic symmetry. The fractional Brownian motion (fBm) and fractional Lévy motion (fLm) can easily describe the geometry and the statistical structure of hydraulic conductivity (K) for real-world. However, the fBm and fLm models have not been systematically evaluated when building the K field for a low-permeability site. In this study, both the fBm and fLm are used to simulate the low-K field at NingCheGu (NCG), Tianjin, China. Groundwater flow and solute transport are then computed using MODFLOW and MT3DMS, respectively, and the influence of the fBm/fLm models for K on groundwater flow and solute transport is discussed. Results show that the fLm fits better the statistics of the low-K medium than fBm, and the random logarithmic K (LnK) field generated by fLm is more stable because the resultant LnK field captures more of the measured properties at the field site than that generated by fBm. In contrast, the LnK generated by fBm is more likely to form both high-K channels and low-K barriers. The fBm therefore predicts more extreme behaviours in flow and transport, including the preferential flow, low-concentration blocks and solute retention. The overall groundwater renewal period and solute travel time for the fLm simulation are slightly shorter than those for fBm. The impacts of the fLm and fBm models on the statistics of the resultant LnK fields and the dynamics of groundwater flow and solute transport revealed by this study shed light on the selection and evaluation of the fractional probability distribution models in capturing the K fields for low-K media. 相似文献
