In order to simulate evolution of a large-scale magnetic field in a barred galaxy possessing a gaseous halo we apply a three-dimensional
(3D) MHD numerical model. We solve a induction equation using a time-dependent velocity field of molecular gas resulting from
self-consistent 3D N-body simulations of a galactic disk. The gaseous halo rotates differentially co-rotating with the disk.
In our model we introduce the dynamo process causing the amplification of the magnetic field as well as the formation of field
structures high above the galactic disk. The simulated magnetic fields are used to construct the models of a high-frequency
(Faraday rotation-free) polarized radio emission that accounts for effects of projection and limited resolution, and is thus
suitable for direct comparison with observations. We found that the resultant magnetic field correctly reproduces the observed
structures of polarization B-vectors, forming coherent patterns well aligned with spiral arms and with the bar. The process
initializing a wave-like behavior of the magnetic field, which efficiently forms magnetic maxima between the spiral arms,
is demonstrated.

In a novel approach in observational high-energy gamma-ray astronomy, observations carried out by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov
telescopes provide necessary templates to pinpoint the nature of intriguing, yet unidentified EGRET gamma-ray sources. Using
GeV-photons detected by EGRET and taking advantage of high spatial resolution images from H.E.S.S. observations, we were able
to shed new light on the EGRET observed gamma-ray emission in the Kookaburra complex, whose previous coverage in the literature
is somewhat contradictory. 3EG J1420–6038 very likely accounts for two GeV gamma-ray sources (E>1 GeV), both in positional coincidence with the recently reported pulsar wind nebulae (PWN) by HESS in the Kookaburra/Rabbit
complex. PWN associations at VHE energies, supported by accumulating evidence from observations in the radio and X-ray band,
are indicative for the PSR/plerionic origin of spatially coincident, but still unidentified Galactic gamma-ray sources from
EGRET. This not only supports the already suggested connection between variable, but unidentified low-latitude gamma-ray sources
with pulsar wind nebulae (3EG J1420–6038 has been suggested as PWN candidate previously), it also documents the ability of
resolving apparently confused EGRET sources by connecting the GeV emission as measured from a large-aperture space-based gamma-ray
instrument with narrow field-of-view but superior spatial resolution observations by ground-based atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes,
a very promising identification technique for achieving convincing individual source identifications in the era of GLAST-LAT.

The purpose of this note is to estimate the accuracy and practical limitations of applying linear theory at a critical level over a realistic range of atmospheric stabilities for an idealized surface terrain. These estimates are made by comparing the results of a linear model with a nonlinear numerical model at a critical level. Essentially similar results are obtained from each model for wave stress, wave breaking height and wave dissipation through the critical level. Because gravity waves can be either evanescent or internal depending on the relative sizes of the Scorer parameter and the wavenumber of the ground surface disturbance, the somewhat paradoxical result develops that wave breaking and non-linearity increase with increasing bulk Richardson number. It is recommended that steady linear wave theory be used in gravity wave drag parameterizations provided near real time profiles of background velocity and temperature are available. 相似文献

西北太平洋台风切向风廓线存在明显的差异,目前MM5中尺度数值模式NCAR-AFWA的模型台风(bogus)方案中仅使用了最大风速和最大风速半径两个参数,有时不能准确地描述台风的外围结构。通过引入十级风圈平均半径和七级风圈平均半径对NCAR-AFWA的bogus切向风廓线进行改进,然后对0425号台风“洛坦”的路径和强度进行模拟,结果发现:在台风bogus切向风廓线中同时引入十级风圈平均半径和七级风圈平均半径对台风路径和强度模拟均有改进,同时对台风大风范围的模拟也有改进。 相似文献
